Are Politics & Fear of Criticism Driving Gov. Newsom’s COVID-19 Decisions?

There has been little to no consistency between what the governor says and what he’s actually doing

It appears the governor’s decisions are not science-based.

It is becoming increasingly clear that California Governor Gavin Newsom’s COVID-19 decisions are a hodgepodge of executive orders and decisions based on factors other than empirical data or science.

In the beginning of the pandemic, Gov. Newsom moved aggressively with his handling of the pandemic. His near daily updates, carried live in most media markets, were seeded liberally with the statement that his decisions would not be “political, but based on science and data.”

However, there has been little to no consistency between what Governor Newsom says and what he’s actually doing. One-size-fits-all orders, shutting down some beaches but not others, instituting one set of standards for retailers and setting 100-person cap for religious organizations and giving us various sets of reopening criteria.

It would be helpful to the people of California if Gov. Newsom would provide clear reference to the data and information he is using to make his reopening decisions or why certain groups and organizations get one set of criteria versus another.

As State Senator Steve Glazer and others recently pointed out, if you look at the testing, hospitalization data and the governors own four-stage guidelines, it appears the governor’s decisions are not science-based.

The contradictory and confusing information coming from Governor Newsom is causing many to wonder whether his COVID-19 decisions are not driven by empirical data and science but by political desires and/or fear of criticism.

  1. I’m really starting to feel as though these democrat governors and mayors took their initial orders to shut everything down from the same entity that sent Fauchi and Birx into President Trumps office in the hopes to scare and persuade him into shutting down America. Shutting down their states to destroy President Trump was a knee-jerk panic when there was no order from the white house to do so.

But now they seem to be simply making it up as they go with zero direction other than their own selfish ambition. They all seem to really not know what to do now, and are using the power they feel as though they have to do whatever they want until someone calls and gives them direction. Newsome alone appears to have a ‘ hey let’s try this … ‘ approach at fixing his disaster when it’s obvious now he has no clue what he’s doing.

In the meantime these democrat states are dying fast with zero concern from the individuals that are causing their demise.

If California and the other blue states do not receive federal bailouts, it scares me to think how they’re going to acquire the money they need for the things they want, and if you work for the state do not think for a minute your job, salary or pension doesn’t have an ax swinging over it.

    1. I agree with you and I am getting the same feeling as you are about the current picture. That is, that Dem state and city leaders were following the same playbook at the beginning and from the beginning of this bizarre episode, whether the motive was anti-Trump or with an eye to making leftist gains and benefiting from them, but they now don’t have a clue about what to do.

When the goal is to throw “the rabble” and every institution into chaos and a state of anarchy there had better be a plan for the tyrannical principals to benefit — right? — whether it is to gain power or money or ideological goals, and I’m with you that it’s becoming clear they don’t have a plan. How do they avoid being drawn into the mess they’ve tried to create, the reasons for which I don’t think they understand at all, such as how the huge engine of the economy works or the true nature of human beings and their response to such events?

In the end, the politicians we are talking about, Newsom and Garcetti and Steinberg and Liccardo and Schaaf (et al) and their cookie-cutter brothers and sisters across the country who have the same dark souls but different faces, do not seem capable of being leaders even of the anarchic, society-destroying movement they seem to desire. In the end it certainly seems that they are too weak and incompetent to achieve even that without being drawn into the chaos themselves.

I would welcome an analysis of where we are now by someone who has the historical knowledge and the skills to fully explain where we are now — and speculate about where we might be headed — while these incompetents are in charge in California. I think it would be very helpful.
