Gov. Gavin Newsom plans to expand his stay-at-home lockdown orders for most of California. He said so Monday in a press conference.
He is taking a lot of well-deserved heat for smothering the state’s economy and suffocating most small businesses.
So naturally, Newsom announced Monday a $500,000,000 “Small Business Emergency Relief Package” to provide “immediate relief “for businesses impacted by the virus. It’s not the virus that impacted small business – it’s the governor who has kept all of California locked down since March, and killed off the state’s small businesses.
Businesses can apply for grants up to $25,000. Wow. He’s also offering “sales tax deferrals.” Not sales tax forgiveness, but deferrals.
THREAD: As we continue the fight against #COVID19, today we announced a Small Business Emergency Relief Package that will provide immediate relief for businesses impacted by the virus.

And there is this exciting one-time offer from the governor:
California’s $100 million Main Street Hiring Tax Credit will launch TOMORROW.
This tax credit will help businesses by providing: – $1,000 per qualified employee – Up to $100,000 for each business.
Doesn’t the governor know that a tax credit for hiring employees doesn’t work unless businesses need to hire employees, which usually only happens when businesses are growing… not after they’ve been shut down for 8 months. A hiring tax credit never inspires employers to hire someone they don’t need or can’t afford.
basically he is destroying businesses then throwing a few dollars at em like it makes em feel better

Who will pay for this $500,000,000 “immediate relief” for small businesses? Yep. You guessed it – California taxpayers. The gov says it’s from the “state reserves,” but who paid for those “reserves?” It’s not “government money.”
A more sound economic plan to provide “immediate relief for small businesses impacted by the virus” would be to open the entire state back up and let employers and employees get back to work.
Gov. Newsom didn’t order all California businesses to lockdown; he allowed big box stores to remain open, referring to them as “essential business,” while small businesses have been whipsawed since March in various stages of closure to partial re-openings, back to closures. The governor authorized marijuana dispensaries, liquor stores, strip clubs, bath houses, and dog groomers to remain open, while bars and restaurants have been closed or opened at only 25% capacity… and outside.
CA will now provide billions in sales tax deferrals including an automatic 3-month extension for taxpayers with less than $1M in sales tax.
This includes hair salons, bars, restaurants, and other businesses heavily impacted by #COVID19.

Longtime California restaurateur Kevin Boss told the Globe he had just finished a remodel on a bar/restaurant in a building he owns in Santa Barbara—”after 2 years of City, County, and State regulatory nonsense—when the lockdowns hit. We decided not to open and try to build a brand until the panic subsided. Even then, I suspected we would still be in some form of lockdown until next year. Not sure how much longer we can hold out—but we’re going to fight. Until a place gets to over 75% occupancy they will, in most cases, be losing money. Takeout, delivery, winter outdoor dining just aren’t going to make it.”
Boss sent the following letter to Gov. Newsom and Santa Barbara public officials in September. He never heard back from the governor. With Boss’s permission, the Globe is sharing his letter. He says in a recent op ed, he is “just one of many California business-owners on the verge of financial ruin by virtue of the near-total Gavin Newsom–ordered lockdowns of the past nine months.”
An Open Letter to Governor Newsom and Santa Barbara Legislators—
So what fresh Hell is this?I’m sorry, but what the f*** is Governor Newsom doing to us? California Covid #’s are actually pretty good. The State’s Original Re-Opening Guidelines said that in order to open up we had to have under 10% positivity on tests—we had that for all but about 2 of the last 12 weeks. Then, the ever moving goalposts say we need to have under 8% positivity. And now, it’s 2% to 7%, depending what New & Improved Color Coded Tier we are in. Once, it was all about Hospitalization and Death “data.” Now we’re back to Total Cases per Day per 100,000 people. What the hell?
Do you understand that the Governor has basically said to California businesses—especially restaurants and bars—that you will NEVER be allowed to operate at normal capacity? He said in his presser, announcing the new protocols, that there is no Green Tier, because he doesn’t want us to think things will EVER be “safe” or “normal.” There is “no going back to a pre-pandemic mindset.” His words. In the New Improved Color Coded Tiers there is no provision for more than 50% seating in restaurants. Ever.
Best case scenario, a restaurant may get to 50% by the end of November. This is absolute horsesh*t.
He also said these absurd measures are designed to fight the “Twindemic”—yes, Covid AND the next seasonal Flu (which has not even arrived yet). So, we are keeping our economy shut down and destroying peoples’ lives and businesses in order to fight something that doesn’t even exist yet? And, We will always wear masks, We will always “socially distance”, We will always be afraid because Emperor Newsom commands it. Fear Forever. The Fear Will Make you Free. We have always been at War with Coronavirus and the Flu.
F*** this sh*t. Don’t any of you knuckleheads have any qualms about this? Or is this the new line? And we’re expected to comply? The Governor and a number of you have repeatedly used the phrase “control the behavior” when referring to various groups of people. “Good behavior is Contagious.” The most repeated word in the Governor’s presser was “Stringent.” Message received, ***hole. Gotta tell you, that’s a bad look on an elected American official.
This is Political and Medical “Expert” Malpractice on an epic level.
State and County governments and unelected “health authorities” have rendered most of the small business property in California unusable. Governor Newsom declared a State of Emergency on March 4th. Yet, when you contact the County Assessor’s Office to see if there are any breaks or reassessments due to the forced closures of businesses you get shrugs and silence. Do you seriously think that business and commercial property should pay taxes on property that has basically been seized and frozen by the State of California? Read the goddamn last clause of the 5th Amendment—“nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.”
Where’s the “due process” in the imperial orders of Governor Newsom and the Health Authorities?
Maybe the Governor and the State believe that the State of California can live off the profits and largess of our large Tech Oligarchs and no longer needs small business. Subsidies will be provided to the unemployed and businesses deemed essential by the Authorities will be given dispensation to operate. How else to explain this idiocy?
In this Brave New World, Marijuana Dispensaries are deemed essential and Bars/Restaurants are deemed dangerous. I’m not sure our Founding Fathers would have approved that one—seeing as how most of the American Revolution was planned in, and executed from, Inns and Taverns. Pretty sure that, were the Founders smoking pot instead of drinking ale, wine, and spirits, we’d still be flying the f**king Union Jack. Maybe a doped up, medicated populace is just what our political overlords need to ensure compliance with this authoritarian garbage.
For over 6 months—with what looks like at least another 6 in front of us– California elected officials have virtually locked down all social and economic activity in a misguided effort to stop a virus. Never before in history have lockdowns been utilized like this. Never before has a government ignored science and common sense, and demanded that the public mask themselves and halt all normal life, creating a culture of fear and loathing. Never before in the US have government officials, elected and unelected, taken it upon themselves to virtually proscribe almost all human activity at a whim. https://www.aier.org/article/how-a-free-society-deals-with-pandemics-according-to-legendary-epidemiologist-and-smallpox-eradicator-donald-henderson/
A California State Senator, Steve Glazer, was quoted in the LA Times recently about the early attempts to ease the Covid lockdown—“it collapsed the effectiveness of our efforts to kill the virus.” His stupidity is obviously contagious. Does he, do you, and do your “health experts” really believe that we can “kill” a virus? The ignorance is stunning. That’s not “science.” That’s panic. And, that’s the cynical use of panic to seize power. https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2020-08-28/california-counties-new-reopening-plan-gavin-newsom-coronavirus
We used to think that doctors and scientists took seriously the admonition to “first, do no harm.” No longer. The amount of stress, pain, suffering caused by the “scientific experts” who propagated the “lockdown” policies will eventually be tabulated. Let’s hope they, and the politicians who abetted them, pay a price for the damage they’ve done. Because, right now, massive job loss, decimated business values, ruined private sector lives stand in contrast to our public sector leaders and “experts” who are still getting paid and still exercising their privileges.
There are many of us who will never forget what has been done to us and to our culture. And, there will be many of us who will be saying “NEVER AGAIN.”
Boss sums this up in his op ed:
Because of Newsom and other lockdown governors, millions of restaurant and bar employees are without work. An entire restaurant ecosystem of suppliers, food-processors, wine-makers, etc. is being forever altered or destroyed. Those governors, and their “expert” advisers, single out restaurants and bars as sources of COVID spread — always without any “data” or “science” to back up their claims.
The photos of Newsom’s French Laundry dinner give the lie to these claims. Newsom and the other privileged guests obviously know that the state’s arbitrary protocols, masks, and social distancing are nonsense. For them. But not for you.
How long will Californians tolerate this tyranny (which is the opposite of Democracy)? Kevin Boss, and millions of other small business owners like him want to know, and they want to know now.
Too late, you already snapped business owners necks with your with your boot via draconian shutdowns
