Government is Losing the Trust of the People

‘If you are under the age of 50 you have a 99.98% chance of surviving from COVID-19’

By Jim Desmond, September 29, 2020 11:30 am

I’ve repeated this often over the last few months. We have lost sight of the goal. I think it’s reasonable for everyone to take a step back and ask “how did we end up here?”

How did we go from “we need to flatten the curve for the month of April” to “we are going to shut your business down in September and October if you decide to stay open?”

In California, the goalposts continue to move. At the beginning the goal was to make sure we had enough hospital beds, make sure we had enough PPE equipment, make sure we weren’t having to choose between who could live and who couldn’t. Thankfully because of the people of San Diego and the great work from our local public health officials, we never had any of those problems.

Now though, the goal has changed. In California, we have a flawed color-coded system and that doesn’t even have a green tier, with full openings. Businesses are going to limited capacity for an indefinite time.

We’ve been told that life won’t get back to normal until there’s a vaccine. So, if the goal truly is to keep everyone locked down until there is a vaccine, we have to start being honest. An Axios/Ipsos poll was done last week that said only 13 percent of Americans would be willing to try the vaccine when it comes out.

Trust is decreasing and now more and more people are becoming suspect of what is coming out from the government. Almost all business owners set goals, whether it’s financial or other factors. They set goals as a way to look towards the future.

I look to Governor Newsom and Sacramento and I wonder, what is the goal? Is it hospital capacity? Is it a vaccine and extinction of the virus?

Yes, we should be working on a vaccine, but we should not put our economic future solely on it. We need to learn to live with this virus. If a vaccine is the goal, we need to win the trust back of the public. We need to let them get back to their life as normal as possible. We need to give them the facts.

The Facts are, if you are under the age of 50 you have a 99.98% chance of surviving COVID-19. If you are below 70 you have a 99.5% chance. In San Diego County, 6% of our hospital beds are COVID-19 patients and we have thousands of hospital beds available in case of an increase. Those are the facts.

We need to quit playing with the emotions of business owners with a flawed color-coded system and we need to start to be honest when it comes to the goals of COVID-19, because we are quickly losing the trust of the people.

  1. AMEN!!!! The truth is coming out. It has to. There is no other way. And we all must keep our dignity and fight instead of bowing to these officials who are out of touch with reality (and the severity of the damage done to the average citizen and business owner, who is not a government employee with guaranteed income).

    1. If only the news media would report this news. I guess they sell more papers and advertising when a portion of the public lives in fear.

  2. The goal is to destabilize the economy and make people miserable and frightened by an invisible boogieman virus.
Then Biden gets on TV tonight and accuses Trump of shutting down the economy in a CLASSIC. Alinsky projection lie…
This scamdemic has all been the Democrats fourth and final attempt to turn people against President Trump.
The debate tonight proved this point to me – the Democrats are in bed with, the Chinese Communists and are using this virus threat to destabilize the American economy and political system…

  3. 80% of the deaths are above age 80… Half of them are in nursing homes, people in nursing homes are down to their last 6-12 months are likely to die of their next infection be it a cold, the flu, or COVID.

2.9M people die in the US every year, 200,000 is a lot but we need to ask how many of these people would have died anyway? The virus will never go away, vaccine or no, so are lives actually being saved or are deaths being delayed and if so by how much?

  4. It’s politics, Jim. Dem Governors led by Newsom seized on the virus to lockdown their states and crash the economy to deprive Trump of the prosperity issue. https://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2018/06/09/maher_im_hoping_for_a_crashing_economy_so_we_can_get_rid_of_trump_bring_on_the_recession.html
Thus Newsom keeps moving the goalposts to maintain the lockdown until Nov. 3 and probably beyond as the Dems have made it a campaign issue. Also Newsom saw the pandemic as an opportunity to “reimagine the economy and government.”
So he’s using his emergency powers to become a dictator and not apt to give them up unless the courts force him to. The Legislature could but adjourned for the year. The County and its businesses should join the suits.

  5. We all know this is a power grab by the Dems….hope we are united enough for this battle so we can keep our freedoms. Take California back and keep America free!

  6. >>if you are under the age of 50 you have a 99.98% chance of surviving COVID-19.

Do you mean surviving an infection? Or surviving as a (currently) healthy citizen?

And a source for this Fact would be appreciated.
