Led by Cal Fire firefighters, local leaders and other management officials, yesterday Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA) toured the town of Paradise where she witnessed the tremendous destruction caused by the horrific northern California Camp Fire.

Traveling from her LA-based home, Harris got a first-hand glimpse of the devastation while being briefed on the current status as well as what preventative measure could have been taken.

Harris said in a statement, “These wildfires claimed precious lives, devastated communities, destroyed thousands of homes, and forced thousands of Californians to evacuate,” and “my heart aches for the families who lost everything, including loved ones. I am incredibly grateful to the firefighters who have been hard at work fighting these fires. The road to recovery for these communities won’t be easy, and we have a responsibility to give them the federal support they desperately need.”

Along with Governor Jerry Brown, Harris was an immediate advocate calling for the President to sign a Presidential Major Disaster Declaration in order to help federally fund victims impacted in the crisis.

Despite this, Harris did not join Governor Brown or Governor-Elect Gavin Newsom when they met with the President in Malibu while touring the Woolsey Fire on Saturday.

The Woolsey Fire has burned roughly 100,000 acres and is 91 percent contained while the Camp Fire has burned 150,000 acres and is 65 percent contained.
