How Many Bills Are on the Inactive Files?

We need to look at bills set for both committee hearings in January as well as bills on the Assembly and Senate Floors

As we begin the second year of the 2-year Session, we need to not only be concerned with 2-year bills in policy committees, but also those pending on the Floors.

While there are quite a few bills on second house Inactive Files from the 2025 Session, (i.e., ABs on the Senate Floor Inactive and SBs on the Assembly Floor Inactive), the January 31 house of origin deadline applies to a small group of bills: ABs on the Assembly Floor and SBs on the Senate Floor.

As I result, we need to look at bills set for both committee hearings in January as well as ABs pending on their Floor and SBs pending on their Floor. Here are the numbers:

On the Assembly Floor, there are 9 ABs on the Inactive File that must be acted upon by the January 31 deadline. There are also 5 ABs that need to be acted upon by next summer. There are also 19 SBs on the Inactive File that will need to be acted upon by August 31.

On the Senate Floor, there are 5 SBs on the Inactive File that must be acted upon by the January 31 deadline. There are also 67 ABs on the Inactive File, plus 4 ABs held at the Desk, that will need to be acted upon by August 31.
