What Is the Table of Sections Affected?

There are a number of important legislative publications, including the Table of Sections Affected. According to the Office of Legislative Counsel, which produces the legislative publications, the Tables of Sections Affected is an index of each section of California’s Constitution, as well as the 29 California Codes, and even uncodified laws, that are affected by introduced bills.

This legislative publication provides links for the measure and the chapter number. The Table of Sections Affected is updated regularly and includes all legislative actions as of the date indicated on the title page of this publication. The Table of Sections Affected is cumulative and is published by the Legislative Counsel.

USE 

The table shows each section of the California Constitution, codes, and uncodified laws affected by measures introduced in the Legislature. It may be used in two ways: 

As a means of locating measures where the section of the California Constitution, code, or law is known. 

To locate measures upon a particular subject, by using a published index to the codes and laws, such as Deering’s General Index, the Larmac Consolidated Index, and West’s General Index, to locate the existing sections, and then by using this table to locate the measures which affect those sections. 

ARRANGEMENT 

The California Constitution is listed at the beginning of the table. Codes are then listed in alphabetical order. Uncodified laws are listed at the end of the table under the heading “Statutes Other Than Codes,” and are cited by year and chapter. References to Budget Items appear in a separate section following Statutes Other Than Codes. 

Code section numbers containing decimal points are printed in a strictly numerical order and may not match the arrangement used in West’s or Deering’s Codes.

Online, the Office of Legislative Counsel provides a Table of Sections Affected, Prior Sessions, which are the final editions of the Table of Sections Affected beginning with the 2017-18 Legislative Session.
