It’s Blaming Men – Hallelujah!

If, in 13 days, the world wakes up to a Donald Trump victory, the infuriated chattering class will immediately blame men.

“Men Power New Hitler” is one possible future headline, another is “Why Men are Evil and Stupid and Voted for Trump.”

Smelly, toxic, uncaring, emotionally distant, hairy, uneducated, toilet seat leaving up men will be deemed the root cause of the catastrophe.

How do we know that? Because it’s already being said.

Two weeks ago, former President Barack Obama went to Pittsburgh to yell at men, black men specifically:

“And you are thinking about sitting out?” he said. “Part of it makes me think — and I’m speaking to men directly — part of it makes me think that, well, you just aren’t feeling the idea of having a woman as president, and you’re coming up with other alternatives and other reasons for that.”

Obama said, “women in our lives have been getting our backs this entire time.”

“When we get in trouble and the system isn’t working for us, they’re the ones out there marching and protesting,” he said.

Most national polls show the race to be very tight overall but they also show a huge “gender gap” in voting patterns. For example, a recent USA TODAY/Suffolk University poll shows former President Donald Trump leading among men 53% to 37%. Vice President Kamala Harris’ lead with women is 53% to 36%.

That’s not just a gap – it’s literally opposite world.

This gap is widely bemoaned by the media as a sign that men just do not understand, well, anything and vote selfishly, unlike most women who are clearly making the right decision for their community and country by supporting Harris.

A woman’s ability to be more caring, more empathetic, her protective instincts are all given as reasons they support Harris. So is the fact that Harris is a woman, even though it is downplayed a bit as being too sexist/on-the-nose to explain the entire gap, it is grudgingly admitted that sometimes girls vote for their own team (they didn’t used to, unless the candidate in question was, let’s say, not a great looker.)

But then why is there no gender gap in two key California elections: Proposition 36 and the race for Los Angeles District Attorney?

Prop. 36 – the one that rolls back much of the evil Prop 47 that tipped the state into its current chaotic spiral – right now is winning by 73% to 28%.  The latest PPIC poll  did not appear to actually break out gender response on that question specifically, but the overall overwhelming lead shows by definition that even if there is a difference it is negligible.

In the LA DA’s race, Nathan Hochman is leading incumbent George Gascon by at least two to one.  In fact, the latest poll put male Gascon support at 25% and women support at 20%.

So why – on the two of the most important public safety issues on the ballot – is there essentially no gender gap?

One explanation is that women, no matter their “caring” instincts, have become tired of living in fear. Another is that the candidates in the LA race are both men so it doesn’t matter and Prop 36 doesn’t have a gender (but I’m sure some Trans expert could find one if they tried hard enough.)

Or, when it comes to public safety specifically, women are shifting their opinions at a very structural level and that there will be no going back to absurd progressive policies.

Or that women are becoming more like men.

Oh, please don’t.
