Did Republicans Just Snatch Defeat from the Jaws of Victory With Speaker McCarthy’s Ouster?

Rep. Tom McClintock: ‘The Democrats will revel in Republican dysfunction’

By Katy Grimes, October 3, 2023 3:40 pm

Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (CA) has been voted out of the House leadership role in a move forwarded by Rep. Matt Gaetz (FL).

The Globe wearily suggested on X (formerly known as Twitter):

“Concerned that House Republicans snatched defeat from the jaws of victory with the McCarthy vote. Couldn’t they have found another way? The margin is too slim in the House.”

We will report back the responses. In the interim, California Rep. Tom McClintock (CA-05) delivered the following remarks earlier today during debate on the House floor.  The Congressman spoke in opposition to a motion to vacate the chair.

Grant Us Wisdom
Congressman Tom McClintock
October 3, 2023

If there was ever a time for sobriety, wisdom and caution in this House, it is right now.

If this motion carries, the House will be paralyzed.  We can expect week after week of fruitless ballots while no other business can be conducted.  The Democrats will revel in Republican dysfunction and the public will rightly be repulsed.  It will end when the Democrats are able to enlist a rump caucus of Republicans to join a coalition to end the impasse.  This House will shift dramatically to the left and will effectively end the Republican House majority that the voters elected in 2022.

This, in turn, will neutralize the only counterweight in our elected government to the woke left’s control of the Senate and the White House at a time when their policies are destroying our economy and have opened our borders to invasion.

There are turning points in history whose significance is only realized by the events that they unleash.  This is one of those times.  We are at the precipice.  There are only minutes left to come to our senses and realize the grave danger our country is in at this moment.  Dear God grant us the wisdom to see it and to save our country from it.

The California House delegation voted along party lines: Republicans voted NO on the Resolution Declaring the office of Speaker of the House of Representatives to be vacant – Democrats voted in favor of it. Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) did not vote.

YES: Democrats: Aguilar, Barragan, Bera, Brownley, Carbajal, Cardenas, Chu, Correa, Costa, DeSaulnier, Eschoo, Garamendi, Robert Garcia, Gomez, Harder, Huffman, Jacobs, Kamlager-Dove, Khanna, Lee, Levin, Lieu, Loffgren, Matsui, Mullin, Napolitano, Panetta, Peters, Porter, Ruiz, Sanchez, Schiff, Sherman, Swalwell, Takano, Thompson, Torres, Vargas, Waters.

NO: Republicans: Calvert, Duarte, Mike Garcia, Issa, Kiley, Kim, LaMalfa, McCarthy, Obernolte, Steel, Valadeo.

  1. “Did Republicans Just Snatch Victory from the Jaws of Defeat With Speaker McCarthy’s Ouster?”

Right now, the answer to this question appears to be YES. I watched the whole thing in living color. Matt Gaetz was Nancy Pelosi’s stand-in as leader of the Democrats in the House of Representatives. Nancy didn’t even have to vote or whip on the motion to vacate the Speaker. Gaetz did the work for her. Gaetz and his crew of mediocre seven other Republicans were LEADING the DEMOCRAT Party to remove Republican Kevin McCarthy as Speaker of the House.

  2. We are “at the precipice “ because the Republican Party has been selling us out for decades. It is time to”clean house” if you know what I mean.

    1. MaCarthy’s 45 day continuance was inexcusable, cowardly, and a cave to Dems- suggesting he would never fight Dems to cut debt, spending, secure border. etc, They v=can work while shutdown.

  3. McClintock and Kiley are in RINO territory I have seen a shift McClintock towards left and Kiley is the puppy dog that follows him.

McCarthy has no followed up at all with his promises – we are spending like drunken fools for bidens war of money laundering. He has let J6 rot when he has the tapes to prove they were just walking through (all a set up) he knows it. He is not holding democrats to charge with border at all –

He was about to agree to more spending on someone elses war to fill up democrats coffers – He is the new Paul Ryan selling out to democrats. He was letting the left bury any conservative with FBI raids and plunge court system into STALIN like force — he didnt stand up for US!

Enough is enough and McClintock and Kiley you are losing independents they see you move left too.

    1. Agree- except it is not just independents they are losing.

The fact the CA Delegation all sided with establishment, status quo explains why CA lacks the fortitude, the drive and power to lead. Leaders are rare- and will be found in a minority opinion. The followers all continue to keep the Congressional Approval rating massively low.

These uniparty followers do not represent We the People. We do not want massive spending, we do not want to endlessly fund others wars when our own border is under attack. We are looking for those who stand out from the crowd to find a new way…. no one in CA provided that leadership.

  4. Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory has been the modus operandi of the Republican establishment for many decades. I am pretty sure McCarthy had this motto tattooed somewhere. ;).

His job as a Rino was to make sure nothing of consequence ever was accomplished. In that he succeeded. Time for a Patriot to run things.

  5. I’m on the fence on this one. The next few days things will sort themselves out. I personally have been up and down the spectrum with Kevin McCarthy. At times he has done great things and at times my perception is that he has been mediocre. This current budget mess reflects both excellence & mediocrity. I appreciate that the house passed several individual budgets requests prior to the deadline. I don’t appreciate that the house was out for most of August and most of September and didn’t have enough time to finish all 12 spending bills out prior to the deadline. They should have either started earlier or been called back into session to have all 12 spending bills out prior to the deadline. The government seems to follow the management philosophy of governing by crisis which is a really poor management style. In regard to Gaetz. I think that he is a snake. He was following Biden’s que on this when he said that McCarthy had negotiated a side deal of Ukraine funding. To take anything that Biden says literal and continually repeat it shows poor judgement on this and that he was out for McCarty. Time will bear this out.

  6. Matt Gaetz and his bumbling crew of populist morons handing a victory to the Democrats. Name a better duo.

  7. “Republican dysfunction”??? I’m disappointed so many Republicans, who I thought were *fiscal conservatives*, consider holding Kevin McCarthy to his word “dysfunctional”. Congressman McCarthy has been “pledging” to cut spending, promising to clean up Washington DC since he was referred to as one of the “Young Guns” back in 2008? 2009? Sorry Rep McClintock, you’re way off *base* on this. There’s nothing dysfunctional about following laws Congress has on the books.
Printing valueless “funny-money” to pay for grocery lists packed with foreign aid and YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT ELSE? While We The People of The United States of America are watching our own few measly dollars buy less and less.

  8. Seems like the jury is still out on this one, whether this will be damaging or constructive. Would just like to float or remind from a devil’s advocate point of view that often politicians like Matt Gaetz, who provide emotional satisfaction to the public when pulling this stuff, are often grandstanding and fundraising —- based on possibly not-quite-accurate public perceptions —- and doing it for their own selfish political ambitions. If so, I sure hope this will work out okay, whatever happens in the wake of it.

  9. Rep. Tom McClintock pontificating again? He’s as much of RINO as Rep. Kevin McCarthy is? They’re both members of the deep-state Democrat/RINO uni-party?

  10. RINOs in Congress like Rep. Tom McClintock are the reason why the Biden regime and Democrats are in power. Tom McClintock voted to certify the stolen 2020 presidential election for Biden and he refused to investigate or even acknowledge any of the blatant voter fraud. Tom McClintock viciously attacked President Donald Trump on Jan. 6 claiming that his rhetoric about the stolen election was “utterly irresponsible,” and he claimed that Trump “betrayed” the trust of his supporters. Tom McClintock refused to stand in solidarity with a fellow Republican like Trump. Tom McClintock is NOT the voice of sobriety, wisdom or reason.

  11. It took 16 rounds of voting for mccarthy to make enough deals to become speaker and only one to remove him. too bad that gaetz had to take the lead on this necessary action to get the attention of the rinos in congress. what business will be disrupted? more republican rollover votes for the demo rats. I am sick of them all and would like to see all incumbents defeated in 2024. The only thing political experience brings is how to rip off the taxpayers.
