Trump State of the Union: Democrats Showed They’re Not On the Side of The American People

Interview with Rep. McClintock: ‘It’s Freedom and Socialism – one or the other… it can’t be both’

By Katy Grimes, February 25, 2026 2:35 pm

President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address Tuesday evening was a celebration of America’s restored greatness. And Democrats showed whose side they’re on, and it’s not with the American people.

President Trump even jokingly said Americans tell him they are getting tired of winning… jokingly, because who gets tired of winning?

In a very powerful speech, President Trump highlighted a year of unprecedented accomplishments: a fully secure border – not one illegal immigrant got through the border in 2025 – lowest inflation in years, falling gas prices, falling crime rates, homicide rate the lowest in 124 years, surging stock markets and 401(k)s, massive tax relief for working Americans, and bold actions to restore peace through strength abroad – 8 wars prevented.

“He was able to claim bragging rights on a huge list of accomplishments,” Rep. Tom McClintock (R-CA-5) told the Globe. “And Democrats made it clear where they stand.”

This was a speech of renewal and resolve — yet congressional Democrats, consumed by delusional hatred and obstruction, refused to join in celebrating these victories for the American people, the White House said.

And 70 Democrats refused to attend the State of the Union, and those who did show up refused to acknowledge the Trump policies improving everyone’s lives, and what many Americans are already starting to feel.

McClintock said going into the midterm election, there are questions voters will answer: “Are you better off today than two years ago?”

He said that by April, most Americans will be feeling relief. “Reagan’s tax cuts took two years, but when they took effect, taxpayers felt relief within the year.”

“The Big Beautiful Bill is Reaganomics on steroids,” Rep. McClintock said. “No tax on tips, no tax on overtime, no tax on Social Security, child care exemption… and the greatest regulatory relief including expanding energy production.”

Here are some of the Trump tax cuts summarized by Kiplinger:

  • The state and local tax (SALT) deduction cap rises from $10,000 to $40,000 for 2025 and stays elevated through 2029.
  • New temporary deductions allow taxpayers to deduct interest on car loans for new U.S.-assembled vehicles (up to $10,000 per year) purchased after 2024, with income phaseouts and expiration at the end of 2028.
  • Employees in traditionally tipped jobs, as specified by the U.S. Treasury and IRS, can exclude up to $25,000 in tips from federal income tax through 2028, subject to income limits and specific eligibility requirements.
  • Overtime pay up to $12,500 (or $25,000 for joint filers) can be deducted in the same period, again with income phaseouts.
  • The federal Child Tax Credit of $2,200 per child remains, but requires a valid Social Security number.
  • New child savings accounts (called Trump accounts) start with a $1,000 federal deposit for kids born in 2025–2028 and allow further yearly contributions subject to limits and rules.
  • Increased estate tax exemption, raising the threshold to $15 million beginning in 2026, indexed to inflation.

“Real wages are up, the labor participation rate is up meaning more people entered the workforce, Unemployment declined, inflation is down, government employment shrunk, the private sector is exploding, and the stock market is up,” Rep. McClintock said.

When taxpayers file taxes this Spring, and start seeing the relief once tax cuts kick in, and with new opportunities emerging, Rep. McClintock said late Spring, early Summer, leading up to the midterm elections, it will be a whole different election, and perhaps even like the Republican landslide in President Reagan’s second term.

By then, as Trump asked last evening, do you really want to bring Democrats back to open the borders? Republicans leapt from their chairs, while not one Democrat stood. “He can already point out the border is secure,” McClintock said.

There were many times during his speech that President Trump announced a winning policy, or an outstanding American, or a tragedy, and Democrats would not clap, or even acknowledge that America is better off:

“Stand if you agree: The first duty of the American government is to protect American citizens, not illegal aliens,” President Trump said. Democrats remained seated.

President Trump said, “Surely we can all agree no state can be allowed to rip children from their parents arms and transition them to a new gender against the parents will.” Democrats remained seated. “Look, nobody stands up. These people are crazy. I’m telling you, they’re crazy!” the President said.

Democrats even refused to stand for the mother of Iryna Zarutska, the Ukrainian refugee stabbed to death on a bus in Charlotte, North Carolina, by a career criminal. Trump asked, “How do you not stand?”

More of what Democrats refused to applaud for Tuesday at the SOTU:

  • Reaffirming “the first duty of the American government is to protect American citizens, not illegal aliens.”
  • The grieving families of innocent American women and children murdered by criminal illegal aliens — including the mother of Iryna Zarutska, a North Carolina woman savagely killed on public transit by a career criminal monster.
  • Securing our homeland and finally ending the invasion of savage criminal illegal aliens — killers, rapists, gang members, and traffickers — with the strongest, most secure border in American history.
  • Prioritizing American citizens over illegal aliens.
  • Unifying against political violence.
  • Inflation finally subsiding after years of Democrat-driven price shocks that crushed working families.
  • Keeping violent criminals locked up.
  • Lower prescription drug prices for millions of Americans.
  • The decisive military action that brought indicted narcoterrorist Nicolás Maduro to justice, crippling drug cartels and liberating our hemisphere from vicious narcotrafficking terrorists.
  • Protecting minor children from the horrors of irreversible sex changes.
  • Gas prices dropping to multi-year lows, putting money back in Americans’ pockets.
  • Law enforcement officers being respected once again after years of vilification.
  • The financial futures of millions of American newborns through Trump Accounts.
  • Protecting the integrity of our elections by preventing illegal aliens from undermining our democracy.
  • Banning large corporations from scooping up single-family homes, ensuring they remain available for working Americans.
  • Ending widespread fraud schemes — like the $19 billion Somali fraud scandal that burdened Minnesota taxpayers.
  • Warrior Dividends for our great military heroes.
  • Reducing the flow of deadly fentanyl across our border by a record 56% in one year.
  • The single largest drop in the murder rate in 125 years, making our streets safer.
  • Explosive growth in retirement accounts and 401(k)s for millions of hardworking Americans.
  • Landmark tax relief through the Working Families Tax Cuts Act: No Tax on Tips, No Tax on Overtime, No Tax on Social Security, and more historic savings.
  • A World War II hero who helped liberate the largest internment camp in the Philippines.
  • Ending eight wars and delivering peace through unmatched American strength.
  • America’s military might restoring respect and fear among our adversaries.
  • Massive economic growth.
  • Total victory over terrorists abroad.

A CNN instant poll found 64% of the President’s State of the Union speech say Trump’s policies will move the United States in the right direction.

Rep. McClintock discussed the mass migration taking place across America – “people leaving Democrat [dominated] states, moving to Republican states. Not only did the President lay bare where Democrats stand on these issues for everyone to see, you get what you vote for.”

And he says that once we get to 2030, Democrats are facing electoral catastrophe. “California could lose five congressional seats, and five electoral votes,” McClintock said. “New York could lose three, while Florida gains three; Illinois could lose one while Tennessee gains one.”

This is important because it goes a long way in explaining the very public meltdown Democrats had at the State of the Union, and on a daily basis. “They are alienating voters,” McClintock said. “Between 2020 and 2024, Democrats lost 2.1 million voters while Republicans gained 2.4 million. That’s a 4.5 million shift in just four years in the 30 states that track it.”

As Democrats get more desperate, Rep. McClintock says it is reminiscent of the John C. Calhoun doctrine and “Nullification Crisis,” similar to our Sanctuary Cities and Sanctuary States, and the confrontation between the state of South Carolina and the federal government in 1832–33 over slavery. Calhoun argued that each state is a sovereign entity with the right to govern itself without federal interference. He believed that the federal government was merely an agent of the states. Naturally, this displeased President Andrew Jackson. Ironically, nullification ensued after South Carolina declared Jackson’s federal Tariffs of 1828 and 1832 unconstitutional and therefore null and void in the “sovereign boundaries” of the state.

McClintock said this lit the fuse of the Civil War. “In his 1858 House Divided speech, Abraham Lincoln said ‘A house divided against itself cannot stand.'” Lincoln and argued that the nation would either become entirely free or entirely slaveholding, stating, “I do not expect the Union to be dissolved… but I do expect it will cease to be divided.”

“The wheel has come full circle,” Rep. McClintock said. “It’s Freedom and Socialism – one or the other… it can’t be both.”

“Socialism and slavery spring from the same rotten socialist-communist ideas and plans, and is at the center of the division of the country today,” Rep. McClintock added. “We have to decide which road to take.”

Fortunately, he said history offers us a lot of patterns.

“The principles of freedom became such a success ,we will see these principles restored,” McClintock said.

The principles of freedom generally emphasize individual liberty, equality, and the protection of natural rights, which include life, liberty, and property.

“Socialism is utterly destruction,” he said. “Wherever socialists have taken control, we see all of the same pathologies: sky high taxes, failing schools, failing electricity and water, rising crime, fleeing businesses and families.”

“We have plenty of experience with freedom and socialism and know which one works,” Rep. McClintock said.

Rep. Tom McClintock said President Trump’s speech was full of hope for a rebirth of freedom, and the policies are already in place. Now it’s time to feel it in our daily lives.

The White House lists more “relief:”

  • Bigger Paychecks: Hardworking Americans and families will see an average increase in take-home pay of OVER $10,000 per year.

  1. Katy, your summary is perfect. Truth laid bare. The Democrats should have a come to Jesus moment soon.
They showed the world who they are last night and those are the ones that showed up. Seventy four of them including Eric Fartswell, Adam Schiff did not bother to represent their districts!
John Solomon the Just the News journalist said last night was the story of The Patriots vs the Hatriots!
They could not even stand for the 5 year old girl recovering from a horrific accident caused by a illegal CDL driver.
I wonder if Gov Gav reached out to her?
