California Democrats All Vote for Pelosi

Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, received 46 votes from California’s Democratic Congressional delegation. She received a total of 220 votes.

Despite some members of Congress voicing opposition to Pelosi for Speaker, all 46 California Democrats, including all seven of the newly elected Democratic representatives in former Republican seats, cast their votes for her.

Rep. Mike Levin (D-San Juan Capistrano), Rep. Harley Rouda (D-Laguna Beach), Rep. Katie Porter (D-Irvine), Rep. Josh Harder (D-Turlock), T.J. Cox (D-Fresno), and Rep. Gil Cisneros (D-Yorba Linda) all flipped Republican districts including several in Orange County, a long-time Republican stronghold.

During the California primary, a survey of 34 Democrats running for Congress in competitive Republican-held seats found only two candidates willing to publicly commit to voting for Pelosi if they were elected, the Bay Area News Group reported. All of the California congressional candidates willing to speak publicly about their opposition to Pelosi as Speaker of the House lost their races.

By Thursday, the day of the vote, all of California’s Congressional Democrats stepped in line for the Pelosi vote.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Bakersfield) received all seven votes from the California Republican delegation, out of a total 192 votes.
