Democrat State Senator Marie Alvarado-Gil Switching to Republican Party
Is there a stinking backroom deal with Third House to prevent another Republican running for Senate District 4?

UPDATE: 9:15pm PST below: Confidential sources inside the State Capitol confirm to the Globe that California State Senator Marie Alvarado-Gil is leaving the Democrat Party and switching her party affiliation to Republican.
Alvarado-Gil has been a very interesting lawmaker to watch in committees and on the Senate Floor. She’s not been afraid to confront progressives in her party on important issues like education and crime – issues which leave voters in the state questioning how Democrats can be so tone deaf to the state’s failing schools and escalating crime issues.
In 2023, Senate Bill 832, by Senator Brian Jones (R-San Diego)to help prevent the covert releasing of Sexually Violent Predators (SVPs) into communities across the state was supported by Alvarado-Gil.
“Coauthoring SB 832 is a no-brainer—we should not allow repeat offenders charged with violent sexual predatory offenses to be covertly released into a community,” noted Senator Marie Alvarado-Gil (D-Jackson). “Many communities in our state, including those living on rural and Indian lands, may not have the adequate police enforcement to ensure the safety of their community from these violent sexual predators. I support State Hospitals acquiring a voice in the best placement for their patients. I applaud Minority Leader Jones’s stance to represent communities that may not have the resources to responsibly home some of the most troubled individuals.”
The other aspect of Alvarado-Gil’s decision to leave the Democrat Party at this point in time is that she’s not doing it right before the filing deadline in 2026, or as Assemblyman Brian Maienschein did when elected to his fourth term and switched party affiliation from Republican to Democrat right after being elected.
California State Senator Marie Alvarado-Gil was elected in 2022, representing the counties of Placer, El Dorado, Amador, Alpine, Calaveras, Tuolumne, Mariposa, Stanislaus, Madera, Merced, Mono, Nevada, and Inyo.
UPDATE:
Moments ago, Senate Minority Leader Brian W. Jones and California Republican Party Chairwoman Jessica Millan Patterson released a joint statement welcoming Senator Marie Alvarado-Gil to the Senate Republican Caucus and the California Republican Party as she announced her departure from the Senate Democratic Caucus and her change in party affiliation.
“Since my first day in office, I have put the interests of my constituents first. I was elected to serve the public, not a political ideology,” said Alvarado-Gil. “The status quo under a supermajority Democratic rule in the legislature is simply not working for this state. It is after deep reflection I announce that I will be joining the Senate Republican Caucus and the California Republican Party in their fight to Fix California.”
“Since I’ve served in our State’s Capitol, I’ve had a front-row seat to witness the supermajority push California in the wrong direction, having a grave effect on our once Golden state. The Democratic Party is unrecognizable to what I once knew and lacks the will to fix the problems plaguing this state. I cannot stand by a party that ignores the will of the people and disregards the core American values that my very community supports and believes in.”
“It takes courage to stand up to the supermajority in California and Marie has what it takes,” said Leader Brian Jones. “Her record on tackling crime, protecting communities from sexually violent predators, and prioritizing her constituents speaks for itself. Senate Republicans are committed to addressing the real issues facing communities across the state and look forward to adding an eager spit fire like Marie to the cause.”
This is a developing story and will be updated.
ANOTHER UDATE:
Wow. When party switching takes place, the rats come out of the woodwork.
The Globe is hearing that there is a stinking backroom deal with the Third House and Sen. Alvarado-Gil to prevent another district Republican who will be running for Senate District 4.
Meanwhile, the Globe received this, questioning Sen. Alvarado-Gil’s veracity:
Assemblyman Bill Essayli posted this on X/Twitter:
The Globe can report that @ChiefJeramy is Police Chief of the City of Livermore.
AND ANOTHER UPDATE:
This Tweet:
UPDATE 9:15pm PST:
This story of Alvarado-Gil switching parties is continuing to look like a well orchestrated scheme. The Globe was supposed to speak with Senate Republican Leader Brian Jones this evening. Instead, we get with these latest headlines:

Great news! A real boost.
Welcome to the Republican Party, Sen. Alvarado-Gil.
This is looking like a backroom deal – updates continue to come in.
Oh! Will check out updates.
What a scandal. Another one for the Dems. Hmm..what will the next dirty trick be, I wonder?

ShowandTell, this makes me think that the RINO CAGOP is part of this backroom deal? I would not be a bit surprised if they were.
Raymond – I definitely hear you but am reluctant to “go there” until we hear more details.
Are we witnessing a “third house” attempt to “own” the next legislature? We have seen their undue influence in the past, as Katy Grimes has written about on many occasions. This particular seat is a state senate seat, next determined in 2026. This year (2024) it’s my understanding that every assembly seat will be on the Nov. ballot. How many of them are Dem v. Dem, this year? Seems to me that might show the extent to which the system has already been gamed? Still trying to work this out. Forewarned is forearmed, though. I hope!
* Not just “Dem v. Dem” of course, but “Dem v. RINO,” as has been said.
Or “RINO v RINO,” “RINO v. Real”
The “third house” obviously knows enough to manipulate the game pieces. And legislators know. So should we.
Our Achilles Heel, or maybe I should say MY Achilles Heel, is the wanting to BELIEVE — even given the cynicism — that someone has switched parties. We need to know what is going on in each district to have a better view of the chessboard. Maybe being more plugged in to social media would help. That is, people who live in each district might be sounding off about their candidates and races, giving us a better picture. E.g., who’s a phony and who’s not.
That does take courage!
I find it awesome!
A woman who will gain respect in her communities she represents. Her statement posted here reminds of Tulsi Gabbard’s exit from the Democrats.
Let’s hope her fellow colleagues follow suit.
We need a change and this is a beginning. Now the voters need to get out and vote Republican if we are going to save this state.
That’s interesting, this move exposes another crack in the democratic reign of power/terror in Sacramento. Sacramento is in the process of changing hands.
In the not too distant past the democrats would recruit a well-known RINO to run in the district alongside of a lesser-known conservative to split the Republican vote and allow the Democrat to be the top vote getter. Another trick that I have seen is that the Democrats have ginned up the Democrat registration (Bakersfield) and utilized those absentee votes which worked to their advantage. Melissa Hurtado is in a similar position as Alvarado-Gill is in. A Democrat that was able to manipulate her way in without representing the majority of the district. It would be interesting to know if there are other State Senators that are in a similar predicament? Eventually California is going to have to purge the voter rolls and switches like Alvarado-Gill are just an attempt to stay in power. I reiterate that California is in the midst of returning to commonsense values.
Hal, I agree with your comments, except for the last sentence perhaps. I’m not convinced yet; although this article does seem to indicate that something (good/bad) does seem to be in the works. What is curious about this “backroom deal” situation is that the State Senate District 4 map appears to coincide with the Congressional District 4 pretty closely (unless I am reading the map wrong). The Congressional District 4 is currently represented by Kevin Kiley……Gavin Newsom’s biggest nemesis. So my point is that these are the same voters….primarily conservative. Kiley is currently being challenged by a Newsom lackey who will probably be defeated by Kiley. So, can you see what I am getting at? They need a primary challenger against Kiley…..Alvarado-Gil?
Raymond, I see your point. If your scenario plays out, she would be attempting to split the republican vote with Kiley and be in the top 2 along with a democratic challenger. Do you think that she can develop enough credibility with Republicans in the district within the next 13 months? That’s when the 2-year seats have to start gaining support for the 2026 election. It’s a given that she would get all the money that she needs but will she be able to convince the voters that she is genuine?
Good questions, Hal. Is she a genuine convert? This can be tested. Would she state unequivocally, that she would not challenge Kiley or another Republican for a congressional seat? Thirteen months is a long time in politics.
A wolf in sheep’s clothing! I looked at her website, “Site under maintenance” probably doing a good scrubbing to wash away past things like her endorsement of Kamila Harris.
Thanks for posting this, Garlicdude
Check this out: Fox network (national) is falling for it —- and apparently Steve Hilton too, smart guy who closely covers California I believe, so I am surprised:
“Dem State Senator Marie Alvarado-Gil goes on Fox to discuss switch to Republican”

I’m with Katy who legitimately raises the question of something very stinky going on here. Also just about EVERYTHING that Asm Bill Essayli says I take to the bank. So I trust what he said in his tweet.
Also that Katy was scheduled to speak with Senate Minority Leader Brian Jones last evening only to have him bail on that conversation has the look, anyway, of something funky going on with the Repubs.
Hope we will hear more on this.
Some Republicans in California are “desperate” for any hint of a change like this Alvarado-Gil announcement. Can’t really blame them, though. FoxNews has too many RINOs and NeverTrumpers like Paul Ryan (on Board of Directors). FoxBusiness is a little better. I prefer NewsMax.
Yes, you are right to be mostly skeptical of Fox Network and I am too. Don’t see it much though — only tweets or excerpts like the one I posted.
There is a lot of extra attention on California right now as I’m sure you know, which is likely the reason for the Fox coverage on this in the first place.
I had a chance to meet Steve Hilton a couple of months ago at a small event and had a chance to talk to him for about 15 minutes. He explained that he is still a green card holder and expects to get his citizenship sometime in 2025 at that time he wants to make a run for governor. He talked about his association with David Cameron a former Prime Minister of England who in my opinion would be a RINO here in California. We will have to watch Mr. Hilton to see what direction his path goes.
Hal, he apparently announced his intent to become a USA citizen back in 2019. Naturalization does not take very long. My mom did it in a few months. So, it’s not clear what is going on with that: https://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/steve-hilton-applying-us-citizen
It will be interesting to see what Congressman Tom McClintock, who represents the similar district, has to say about this.
