The Gavin Newsom Effect: More People are Moving from California U-Haul Reports
California lost 361,623 residents and $20,915,598,000 in income to Texas
By Katy Grimes, August 25, 2025 8:00 am
It’s starting to feel like Groundhog Day. Every nationwide report has bad news for California whether it’s CEOs or U-Haul rentals for moves to other states. As we reported in July, California lost 361,623 residents and $20,915,598,000 in income to Texas.
California made the top of Allied Van Lines Company 2024 Allied US Migration Report unfortunately for outbound migration. We are losing residents to other states, and not replenishing them with inbound migrants.
In U-Haul’s 2025 Midyear Migration Trends report the do-it-yourself moving company says with the summer moving season, “odds are you have seen a U-Haul® truck being unloaded at a home near you. Or perhaps you were the one moving.”
“With nearly half of all residential moves in the U.S. occurring between Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends each year, the U-Haul midyear migration trends report answers the question: ‘Where did those new neighbors come from?’”
That’s a good question.
“U-Haul, which is celebrating 80 years of Moving America, looked at its one-way customer transactions from January to July 2025 to determine the leading origins for trucks, trailers and U-Box® moving containers bound for the 35 metro areas with populations greater than 2 million.”
As the Globe has previously reported, the top states Californians were leaving for – as we’ve become accustomed to, Florida and Texas, North and South Carolina and Tennessee.
Here are the top cities where California U-Haul do-it-yourself movers landed:

Earlier in July the Globe reported on U-Haul’s 2025 report showing that more Californians rented one-way U-Haul trucks to leave the state in 2024, than residents of any other state, once again finds – for the fifth year in a row – the once Golden State finished 50th in the U-Haul Growth Index.
California ranked last in U-Haul growth.
We call this “The Gavin Newsom effect.”

People flee communism. In America, that’s easy to do. Pack up your things and move to a Republican state.
Unfortunately so called Republican states have major cities that are controlled by Democrats who are just as authoritarian, dictatorial and totalitarian as those in California. Look at Texas where radical Marxist Democrats control major cities like Austin, Houston and Dallas. Even Boise in Idaho has a hard left Democrat mayor named Lauren McLean who is pushing the radical left alphabet rainbow agenda and DEI. In April 2025, her administration supported a City Council resolution to designate the Pride flag as an official city flag in response to the state legislation. McLean defended the flag’s presence, stating it symbolizes inclusivity and has been “beloved in Boise” for nearly a decade, and emphasized that the law lacked enforceable penalties.
One can no longer run from these criminal Marxist Democrat thugs who are in every state.
Another issue is that so called “Republican states” have many RINO legislators who might as well be Democrats. Take Idaho for example where Mike Crapo has been a Republican senator since 1999. He loudly objected to President Trump’s executive order banning mail-in ballots and voting machines claiming that “Idaho has an outstanding record of making sure that our elections are fair and people are not cheating.” He probably wouldn’t in office since 1999 if that were really true?
All good points, TJ.
You’re not paying attention. Tourists from other countries don’t even want to come to the US from other countries now. That’s a far more telling trend. People with $ don’t want to even visit a country becoming increasingly a fascist police state.
Since the Dem Party has had total control of CA government since 2011, (and really since 1999 with the brief interruption of ~55% Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger), why isn’t CA a paradise state people are flocking to?
Great question! Here’s one prime reason California is not a paradise: Newsom has been the Mayor of San Francisco, the Lieutenant Governor of CA, and now the Governor of CA. When in each office he has made promises to improve the homeless situation in our State, but it has worsened under his so-called governance. What a shame for California.
Other areas where Newsom has not excelled: Taxes, Education, Illegal Immigration, Crime & Punishment, Water Management, Business Cooperation, Health Care…. pick a topic and Governor Newsom has probably made it worse during his tenure. Who can name a good reason to vote for this guy, or any other Democrat for that matter??
Instead of the most productive and brightest being forced out California, how about Hair-gel Hitler Newsom, dingbat Mayor Karen Bass, and the rest of the criminal Marxist Democrat thug mafia who have made an absolute mess of this state be held accountable and be given one way tickets to Gitmo? Newsom’s Rapid Response Media Team (aka Brandon Richards (he/him | 🏳️🌈 bi+), Robert G. Martinengo, Zzyzx, etc.) need to go with them. Let them try to deflect for Newsom with their “clout-chasing” social media strategy from Gitmo!
I would also like to see the so-called do-nothing-but-harm “leadership” in California, Circus Freak Gavin Newsom, Castro-Wannabe Karen Bass, and all of their disgusting destructive BFFs and Flying Monkey servants shipped off to Gitmo “temporarily” —– you know, like the misrepresented Dem-Marxist redistricting mess would be with us “temporarily” (not) —– where they could sit back, relax, reflect, enjoy the tropical weather, and plan their next (nonexistent) moves in politics, AKA base criminality. No more liquor and pate to enjoy at Gitmo, though! Sorry.
I would like to see a census without illegal citizens counted.
Let’s see the real numbers in this state.
Bring back required voter i.d. Now that would be interesting.
What I propose scares Newsom and his power hungry minions so much that they must tip the scales by gerrymandering and already gerrymandered state!
Most people I know that have moved out of California are a mix of conservatives and liberals.
Number one reason affordability followed by low quality of life due to rising crime.
So yes, it would be interesting to know who is left. In my area it is H-1B visa holders. So yes, let’s see the real numbers who are qualified to vote under federal law!
It is not just the millions of illegals but the 55 Million foreigners here on visas!
Affordability is definitely an issue We have a family member in her 30’s who lives in Orange County with her husband in an older one bedroom apartment with rent of $2,500 a month. They want to buy a house and start a family but it’s almost impossible to buy a home as a middle income couple when the median priced home is $1.2 million for a fixer upper. They’re apolitical and love Orange County but they’re considering moving out of state just to be able to buy a home because everything is so expensive in California.
I had another unpleasant experience this afternoon around 4 pm that makes me want to leave Sacramento and California. I went grocery shopping at the Raley’s on Fair Oaks Boulevard which is near CSU, Sacramento campus and the American River. This used to be a nicer area of Sacramento with some expensive homes and upscale businesses nearby. There were homeless individuals in Raley’s parking lot, along Fair Oaks Boulevard and also along the nearby streets. Their trash was tossed everywhere. There was a beefy armed security guard who guarding the front door of Raley’s as I entered the store. As I was pushing my shopping cart near the milk section in the back of the store, I saw a young Asian woman who was barefoot with long pink hair and wearing a black negligee type mini skirt come running towards me while screaming something unintelligible. She reached around me, grabbed a milk carton, opened it and then poured the milk over her head while screaming hysterically. It was bizarre! The security guard and a store employee rushed over and escorted her to a back room. One of the store employees thought that she must have been high on some kind of drug and was having a bad trip. This kind of craziness is an almost daily experience in Sacramento and it’s sad how bad things have become under Democrats who completely control Sacramento.
Oh noooo! That is SCARY.
This crap needs to STOP, as we have been begging for years now.
Come ON.
Oh Samantha, that is horrible. I am glad you are okay. Too bad it didn’t happen to a guy like Gruesome Newsom. He needs a wake up call.
You can’t even go shop in a Raley’s.
It use to be such a nice suburban neighborhood, My Aunt raised 6 children in Fair Oaks.
Sadly, your story is not isolated. This is why many people order groceries online.
Democrats have ruined this state!
Yay, WAY TO GO TEAM DEMISE! 🤡
It’s too bad Ronald Reagan defunded mental health care in California.
Look it up
Oh look, Hair-gel Hitler Newsom’s bitchy old queen Roberta is trying to blame Ronald Reagan who was governor in the last century over 50 years ago for defunding mental healthcare. Not only is it not true, but Democrats have controlled the state for decades and they’ve done absolutely NOTHING! Hair-gel Hitler Newsom and the criminal Democrat thug mafia in the legislature would rather provide taxpayer funded healthcare to their illegal alien voter base than provide mental healthcare for legal Californians.
Ronald Reagan did not directly defund mental healthcare in California, nor did he close any state mental hospitals himself. The Lanterman–Petris–Short (LPS) Act was passed with overwhelming support in the Democratic-controlled legislature and signed into law in 1967. It was a bipartisan measure designed to protect the rights of individuals with mental illness and end inappropriate, indefinite commitments. The law, which took full effect in 1972, significantly reformed involuntary commitment procedures and led to the deinstitutionalization of state psychiatric hospitals by allowing patients to leave and limiting how long they could be held without judicial review. The act aimed to shift care from large institutions to community-based mental health facilities, but the promised funding for these community programs never materialized, a failure attributed to subsequent legislative inaction by the Democrat controlled legislature.
That’s right that idiot sell out to the rich started all the demise in our state by defunding the mental health system. He put them out on the street thus creating the homeless problem. He also took away tax deductions for interest from credit cards to personal loans any kind of interest payments were suddenly were no longer deductible. It got worse when he became president. That man single handily destroyed the middle class in California then took his bullshit programs nationwide for 2 terns as President. Now we have Trump who is cementing the fate of millions of Americans by defunding Medicare and before he’s through probably Medicare and Social Security. It’s getting worse as time goes by and I don’t know how any young person now will ever be able to afford a home in California or nationwide as prices are out of reach . It’s just a shitshow of pure arrogance and grifting to widen the gap between obscene rich and poor no middle class.
It looks “Neil Guerrero” can be added to the list of dumb bitchy queens from Hair Gel-Hitler Newsom’s rapid response media team who are posting their idiotic nonsense here. California has the widest gap between the rich and poor of all states with a rapidly dwindling middle class because of the failed Marxist policies of Hair-gel Hitler Newsom and the rest criminal Democrat thugs that have destroyed this once great state. They import third world illegal aliens which have become their primary voter base while driving out hard working productive legal citizens.
Using Reagan has the fall guy is simply untrue cause we had a mental health crises coming back to the late 50’s ,when Thorazine became availablle there was hope that people suffering from mental health go back safely into the community . In one of last acts President JFK signed the mental health act deinstitutionalization of state mental health hospitals do be replaced with local community health centers 60’s in the 70’s . .
Under Gov. Edmund G. Brown Jr., the critics are contending, the system has deteriorated to the point that thousands of patients are being pushed out of mental hospitals to find their way through the inhospitable worlds of skid rows, flophouses and county jails.

Republican presidents have done the more damage to this country than any Democratic president however Obama came close.
Woodrow Wilson, a Republican empowered the very private and foreign controlled Federal Reserve Bank: There’s nothing federal about it.
Richard Nixon another Republican is responsible for removing America from the gold standard of banking accountability.
Then is was Ronald Reagan also a Republican, opened the flood gates for illegals by granting gross amnesty to persons who illegally entered America.
Finally you can thank Donald Trump for ushering in the COVID vax. He bragged about his COVID accomplishments.
Whenever I hear Democrats talk about why they vote for Democrats, it is like listening to someone tell you why they are fans of their local sport team. They don’t have any rational reason. They just want to root for something.
They want, actually need, with a desperate, itchy craving, someone or something to HATE. Instead of being mature adults who try to intelligently and methodically assess and solve their own personal problems, they “put all their troubles in an old kit bag” and use that sack of junk as fuel to “Hate Trump” with an explosive and likely suicidal case of TDS, which displacement they foolishly and mistakenly think solves what ails them. Nope! SO sorry. Doesn’t work that way.
Very true, Showandtell. They hate white people. They hate men. They hate anyone with a job. They hate people who work hard. They hate anyone who doesn’t agree with them. They hate women who stay home and raise kids. They hate happy people. They hate religious people. They hate people with freedom.
“…They want, actually need, with a desperate, itchy craving, someone or something to HATE. Instead of being mature adults who try to intelligently and methodically assess and solve their own personal problems…”
That describes Trump to a ‘T’!
Well done
I have to agree with you Protect Freedom. Most likely they have been part of a union and told how to vote.
Go team demise!
LOL, I’m going to have to remember that one, One Fed Up Cali Girl.
GO TEAM DEMISE!
Yes, Protect Freedom. They are simply unthinking fanatics…..which is what makes them very dangerous.
I think I resent that 😉
“Whenever I hear Democrats talk about why they vote for Democrats, it is like listening to someone tell you why they are fans of their local sport team. They don’t have any rational reason. They just want to root for something.”
I vote for Democrats because the Republicans have become the Putin Party.
Is that a good enough reason for you?
What are you talking about?
He appears to believe that there is a relevant difference between closet Fascists and closet Communists. Arguing with the left is like trying to play chess with a chicken. All it does is peck at the pieces and crap on the board.
I started a GoFundMe to send MAGA to Mars!
I received billions in donations from all around the world.
But on second thought, Mars is too nice for y’all.
Hello Mercury!
Hair-gel Hitler Newsom and the old bitchy queens on his Rapid Response Media Team (aka Brandon Richards (he/him | 🏳️🌈 bi+), Roberta G. Martinengo, Zzyzx, etc.) are being sent to Gitmo. Good luck trying to deflect and prop up Newsom with your “clout-chasing” social media strategy from Gitmo!
Can we send YOU to Uranus, “Robert”???
Breitbart reported that singer Lionel Richie was shocked on Saturday when his home was targeted by a brazen burglar while he was home in his Los Angeles mansion. He is just one of the growing list of celebrities who have suffered home invasions, theft, and property destruction in Los Angeles which now ranks as one of the most burgled areas in the country. Breitbart went on to provide a long list of celebrities who have been victimized thanks to the anti law enforcement policies of Hair-gel Hitler Newsom, dingbat LA Mayor Karen Bass and the rest of the criminal Democrat thug politicians.

I was born and raised in CA. I retired early from my job and moved to Texas… where I could afford to retire (in CA I’d need part time work to get by). Nearly all of my family and friends from California live in Texas, Nevada or Idaho.
Nutbag Gavin Newscum is a lying, cheating, crooked, slimy rat snake-oil salesman. Never believe a word that comes out of that douche-bags mouth.
that sounds like Trump and everyone in his administration. but it’s missing one major adjective: unqualified
All in all, fleeing California works. The larger more dangerous issue looms if this LOSER wins the presidency
this is odd because so many people from idaho are moving to California despite fires and weather, natural disasters, etc. they hate the politics and lies here, and the fact that Republicans are supposed to be the party of fiscal responsibility and less government, but only seem to be so in name. reality shows that they rely on federal funds way more than democrats, and that they are creating more government restrictions, not harmful rights violations, than democrats ever have.
We definitely NEED less people in Los Angeles….
39 Million residents lose 1 percent of their population. Wow! Bye-Bye.
When I bail out of California, I will be driving my RV with a full sewage tank. By the time I cross the state line, it will be empty.
