About Last Week… You called, U-Haul?

California is too good for you people

By Thomas Buckley, January 8, 2024 2:09 am

More accurately, at least for tens of thousands of erstwhile Californians: You called U-Haul, right?

Yet again, California tops the “we’re getting the hell out of here even if we have to pack our stuff ourselves” annual U-Haul migration list.

The state has seen a loss of at least 800,000 over the past few years, a trend fueled by the honest and responsive government, public fiscal solidity, low crime rates, excellent economic opportunities across all strata of society, and a sense the future is as bright as it’s ever been.

I think that’s how Gavin explains it – California is too good for you people.

There is a ray of sunshine on the population horizon, though.  Now that that state is offering free health care to any non-citizen that can fog a mirror, expect that population frown to turn upside down.

Yay.

Where folks are going should come as no surprise – low tax, warm places that are even further away politically than physically.

With New York nearly as bad as California on the list, we can say with a certain certainty that few are taking up Buffalo’s promise of being a “Climate Change Refuge.” Really, seriously, I blank you not – here’s the website.

From said site:

“How Buffalo’s Weather Is Going From Punchline to Lifeline – You read that right. In the not-so-distant future, Buffalo may have the most desirable climate in the United States… And already now Buffalo is welcoming those displaced by climate change.”

Well, when the aliens from the surprisingly entertaining Charlie Sheen movie “The Arrival” finally really show up we’re all doomed anyway so you might as well spend your final days in, um, Buffalo.

Speaking of happy places, that’s where Adam Schiff finds himself now vis a vis his attempt to take his lyin’ ass to the other end of the U.S. Capitol.  The most recent poll puts him at 28%, with Steve Garvey clocking in at 19%, Katie Porter at 17%, and Barbara Lee at 14%.

The first debate of the campaign has been slated for January 23, about two weeks from now (I know the title says “About Next Week” but tough.)

Two things about the debate of note. First, Schiff will unquestionably leave Garvey alone while Lee and Porter try to savage him.  If asked about this tactic after the debate, Schiff will say “Well, I think Katie and Barbara were speaking for all of us and I wanted to focus on my plan for California and the nation.”

He will not say “I wanted everyone to see what a nasty piece of work Katie is and I really really really really want to run against Garvey in the general election and if I could send him a check for a million dollars without anyone knowing I would.”

The second aspect of the debate is who will not be there.  They may not be polling quite as high right now, but there is a very large percentage of the electorate still undecided that could be swayed, said candidates Christina Pascucci, Democrat, and Eric Early, Republican.  Early polls at 7%, with Pascucci at 4%; with second place only at 19% now, they may have a point.

“This isn’t a debate with the qualified candidates whom voters have chosen, it’s a coronation of Adam Schiff, the leader of California’s left wing Democrats,” said Pascucci, while Early called the snub “yet another attack on our democracy, by effectively telling California’s 40% (note – it’s true that other polls have reported numbers in this range) of undecided voters in a ‘jungle primary’ whom they should and should not decide on.”

So if they don’t end up on the debate stage, to even the field a bit here are their campaign websites just in case:  https://ericearly.com/ and https://christinaforcalifornia.com/ .

Speaking of politics (yeah, I know, that one was lazy), LA DA candidate Nathan Hochman announced he has raised more than $1.25 million dollars so far for his campaign to unseat the abominable George Gascon (here’s his latest atrocity)

“Nathan’s fundraising success shows that his message is resonating with the public, which is fed up with Gascon’s pro-criminal blanket policies that have destroyed the morale of the D.A.’s Office, fractured the partnership with law enforcement, and endangered our public safety. That will change when Nathan Hochman is elected,” said former DA Steve Cooley, an ardent Hochman backer.

Hochman also announced a million dollar TV ad buy to run commercials in LA through the March 5 primary date.

Money is important in LA politics – Gascon took down former Jakie Lacey with a huge infusion – much more than Hochman announced –  of woke Hollywood and Silicon Valley and George Soros cash in 2020.

Oh, and Gascon lied a whole bunch, too.

And it was the Summer of Floyd so turncoat LA pols like Eric Garcetti switched their endorsements to him from Lacey mid-stream. A quick note on that – as a former elected myself, dropping an endorsement made is a very rare thing and typically caused by the candidate being arrested while wearing a tutu and a rhinoceros mask and carrying a blunderbuss. It really doesn’t happen, is incredibly insulting, and typically – by whatever low standards politicians have – seen as a legitimately terrible thing to do. Hey, that’s Eric in a nutshell…or maybe a tutu.

The official campaign finance filings have to be made with the LA County Registrar within the next week or so, so if and/or how far Hochman is ahead of the pack will be seen then. The filings will definitely show more information on the state of the race, especially whether or not Gascon’s well-heeled backers are still behind him or if they are switching the woke vote to Jeff Chemerinsky.

Speaking of woke (a little better,) Joel Kotkin has a great piece on Spiked now on how the progressives have “abandoned the working class and embraced the oligarchs.”

If you do read the piece, just take all of his stats and observations and times their awfulness by 10 to make them more California-specific.

The Democrats have walked away from the working working class and created a dependent working class in order to keep power.

On that sad note, thanks for reading the Globe!

  1. As Buckley noted, Democrats have walked away from the working working class and created a dependent working class in order to keep power. That along with voter fraud and rigged voting machines.

  2. Rick Caruso raised a lot of money & didn’t win. So did Hochman when he ran for AG. So while money is important, my family will be voting for John McKinney. I know about 20 DDAs & every single one of them is strongly supporting Mckinney. And I went to a fundraising event last week & was impressed how many current & retired Deputy DAs were there supporting McKinney. He is very well liked among his colleagues because they see him as a leader. Many have worked with him for 25 years. That speaks volumes to me.
