Republicans Are Fleeing California’s Failed Policies for Nevada

This political migration is already reshaping Nevada’s voter landscape, where Republicans lead in voter registration for the first time in nearly two decades

A new analysis from the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC) confirms what conservative Californians have been saying for years: Republicans are exiting the Golden State in far greater numbers than Democrats, with neighboring Nevada emerging as a top destination for those voting with their feet against one-party Democratic rule and Governor Gavin Newsom’s failed progressive agenda—an agenda that Nevada’s Democratic legislative majority advances and supports.

According to the PPIC study tracking voter registration moves between the 2020 and 2024 presidential elections, approximately 39 percent of those leaving California and re-registering elsewhere were Republicans — compared to just 25 percent Democrats. On the flip side, new arrivals registering in California skewed heavily Democratic at 54 percent.

“Way more Republicans are leaving,” noted PPIC senior fellow and policy director Eric McGhee. He pointed to a combination of political disillusionment with Democratic control of the governor’s office and Legislature, along with housing costs that have spread California’s affordability crisis far beyond the state. “Californians leaving for Republican states are much more likely to be Republican than Democratic, compared to Californians as a whole,” said McGhee.

Nevada ranked No. 1 among all states for per capita gains from California refugees in 2024, attracting 13 new residents per every 1,000 Nevadans — outpacing even traditional red-state magnets like Florida and Texas.

This political migration is already reshaping Nevada’s voter landscape.

According to the latest Nevada Secretary of State data released in March 2026, the Silver State now has 2,140,380 active registered voters. Republicans hold a narrow but historic edge with 595,212 registrants (27.81 percent), slightly ahead of Democrats at 593,912 (27.75 percent). Nonpartisan voters remain the largest bloc at 811,573 (37.92 percent). This marks the first time since 2007 that Republicans have led in active voter registration — a direct result of the California influx.

As The California Globe has documented for years, Newsom’s policies — sky-high taxes, energy mandates, unchecked spending on homelessness and social services with little results, and soft-on-crime laws — are driving the sustained exodus. The “Newsom Effect” continues to push both residents and businesses out of the state, as evidenced by repeated U-Haul migration reports and business closures.

This Republican flight is not just anecdotal; it is fundamentally altering the political balance in neighboring states. Many transplants are settling in Reno and Las Vegas, drawn by Nevada’s no-income-tax environment, lower housing costs, and more business-friendly governance under Republican Governor Joe Lombardo.

The irony is thick: While some Nevada Democrats recently welcomed Newsom to Las Vegas in an apparent bid to import California-style policies, the wave of freedom-seeking Republicans from the Golden State may serve as the ultimate bulwark against “Californication.”

With the 2026 midterm elections on the horizon, this demographic shift could prove decisive in building Republican strength in the battleground Silver State and preventing the same fiscal and social dysfunction that has emptied California neighborhoods. When taxes are too high, crime too rampant, and government too intrusive, productive taxpaying citizens will seek greener — and redder — pastures.

  1. The wife and I are in discussion as to which state we leave California for. Have friends in Las Vegas….we’ll see. But Kommiefornia not in future for us. Would like to get out before transfer tax is voted in.

  2. “On the flip side, new arrivals registering in California skewed heavily Democratic at 54 percent. ”

Wonderful. More clueless idiots are moving into California. Haven’t we suffered enough?

  3. We’ve considered eventually retiring from the Sacramento area to the Reno area. However, we’ve found that homes there are more expensive to comparable homes in the Sacramento area. Reno is somewhat better politically being only somewhat controlled by Democrats compared to Sacramento which is completely controlled by radical Democrats. The upside of living in Reno would be that our taxes would be much lower.

  4. “Americans” are fleeing California, as a direct result of destructive democrat policies. We are not the same.

  5. You must stop this ridiculous claim that Newsom has failed California, in his mind and those of the left, he has been a resounding success. Almost every policy he has campaigned and stood for has come about and he is proud of his success. He is not concerned in the slightest about the conservative migration out of California, conservatives leaving only helps consolidate his power,
