SF Mayor Lurie Walks Away From Bodyguard Left Bleeding in Tenderloin Assault 

In a shocking viral video, San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie’s security detail was viciously assaulted in the Tenderloin district on Thursday evening, leaving one officer bleeding from a head injury while the mayor calmly observed and then walked away.

The altercation unfolded just before 6 p.m. near Cedar and Polk streets when Lurie’s black SUV was blocked by three individuals. According to the injured officer’s statement, Lurie “hopped out” to ask the group to move, initially prompting compliance. However, one man suddenly charged at a member of the security team, leading to a grapple that ended with the officer being slammed to the pavement and sustaining a head wound. A second officer was also injured in the fray.  

Video footage shows Lurie watching the struggle before turning and departing the scene, leaving his bodyguard to fend for himself as the assailant shouted obscenities during his arrest.

Two suspects were apprehended: Tony Shervaughn Phillips, previously arrested on suspicion of murder in 2019 but never charged, and an unidentified second man who attempted to flee. Phillips, now facing charges related to the assault, exemplifies the revolving door of San Francisco’s justice system under progressive policies that have allowed violent offenders to roam free. The San Francisco Police Officers Association commended the officers for their “bravery and decisive actions” in protecting the mayor, wishing the injured a speedy recovery. 

Lurie, unharmed in the incident, provided a brief comment to reporters, stating that the men had “tried to fight a police officer” but declined to elaborate further. His spokeswoman, Olga Miranda, issued a statement emphasizing, “The mayor is safe and unharmed. Two individuals were arrested. The SFPD is investigating the incident.”

Lurie’s tenure, which began with a symbolic $1 salary and promises to tackle homelessness and fiscal deficits detailed in his inauguration coverage, has been marred by controversies, including a $350,000 personal expenditure on PR consultants to polish the city’s image. His administration’s handling of a projected $1 billion shortfall in 2026 raises additional questions about priorities, especially as street-level violence persists.
