Arizona Senator Ruben Gallego has been pulled into the widening scandal surrounding former California Congressman Eric Swalwell after publicly acknowledging his close friendship with Swalwell and admitting he regretted not acting on earlier rumors about Swalwell’s behavior.
Gallego, who had endorsed Swalwell’s gubernatorial bid in California, withdrew his support after multiple women accused Swalwell of sexual misconduct and assault. Swalwell has denied the allegations, but the fallout has been swift, leading to his resignation from Congress and the collapse of his gubernatorial campaign.
Gallego told reporters he had heard rumors that Swalwell was “flirty” but said he never confronted him and was blindsided by the allegations, as previously reported by California Globe.
The renewed scrutiny of Gallego has also revived attention to his recently concluded legal fight in which The Washington Free Beacon succeeded in unsealing divorce records from his split with Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego.
According to court filings, Gallego filed for divorce in December 2016 while Kate Gallego was pregnant and, according to his own filing, “likely to give birth any day.” His petition stated that the marriage was “irretrievably broken” and that there was “no reasonable prospect of reconciliation.”
🚨 Media stayed quiet during Ruben Gallego’s tight 2024 Senate race, but the Washington Free Beacon fought a 10-month legal battle and won.
His 2017 divorce records from then-wife Kate Gallego (Phoenix councilwoman, now mayor) are now unsealed.

Kate Gallego did not affirm that claim in her response. Instead, she stated that she was “without knowledge of information sufficient to form a belief” about whether the marriage was irretrievably broken and formally denied the allegation.
The records also show that Ruben Gallego initially sought to seal the entire case from public view, arguing that disclosure would harm both parties because of their political careers. At the time the motion was filed, Kate Gallego had not yet been formally served.
The Free Beacon moved to unseal the case in January 2024, arguing that Gallego had publicly discussed the divorce and that voters had a right to examine the underlying records for themselves.
In October 2024, the Arizona Court of Appeals ruled that most of the records should be unsealed, finding that the Gallegos had not shown sufficient justification for keeping broad portions of the file hidden from the public.
Among the details that emerged after the records were released was that Ruben Gallego asked the court to award him attorney’s fees from Kate Gallego under the Arizona statute. Kate Gallego later responded by asking the court to order Ruben Gallego to contribute to her own legal fees and costs instead.
The records also showed that Gallego initially filed the case in Yavapai County rather than Maricopa County, where both parties lived.
Despite the renewed political attention, the unsealed documents did not include allegations of domestic violence, infidelity, or a major custody dispute. The divorce decree stated that both parties agreed there had been no domestic violence during the marriage, and the case was finalized within several months.
Court filings also referenced informal discussions between the parties before Kate Gallego was formally served, and her attorney reportedly did not oppose the initial request to keep the records sealed.
In a 2019 ceremony, Ruben Gallego married lobbyist Sydney Barron; a celebration of their marriage in 2021 has recently drawn scrutiny in the form of a Daily Mail exposé, as previously reported by California Globe.
Kari Lake, Deputy CEO of the US Agency for Global Media and Gallego’s opponent in the 2024 election, reacted in an interview with Benny Johnson on Thursday. In a post to X she wrote,
“I had the dubious honor of running against @RubenGallego— a true scumbag. I don’t say that lightly. Most candidates have a few skeletons. Gallego’s opposition file was a massive three-ring binder so heavy I couldn’t lift it.
• He committed mortgage fraud on federal forms, using a veterans’ first-time homebuyer program to buy a million-dollar second home in D.C.
• He changed his name to hide that his father was a convicted felon and Mexican cartel drug trafficker.
• His own Democratic colleagues called him “the Troll” for creepily harassing women.
• A 20-year-old Phoenix City Hall staffer filed a harassment complaint against him — then he got her fired.
• He served his pregnant wife with divorce papers days before she gave birth, then tried to force her to pay his legal fees.
And the cherry on top: his bromance with Eric Swalwell. The two jetted off on an $80,000+ Qatari-government-funded trip during COVID lockdowns, posing topless on camels while the rest of us were locked down and our kids were masked. They were inseparable. That’s why Ruben’s sudden attempts to separate himself from Swalwell look completely phony.”

The renewed focus on the divorce records and past controversies comes as Gallego attempts to distance himself from Swalwell amid the former congressman’s political collapse and the broader scrutiny of Democrats tied to him.

Sorry Ruben Gallego, you cannot run from your past, it will catch up to you.
If the Dems think you are kryptonite, you will be thrown out along with your ex-BFF, Swalwell.
