West Hollywood Declares War on Home Depot Over Imaginary ICE Ties

Government at its most self-destructive: It’s easier to virtue-signal against a corporation than to enforce the law

West Hollywood, that glittering enclave of progressive virtue where common sense goes to die, has once again proven that ideology trumps practicality. In a move that would be comical if it weren’t so expensive for local taxpayers, the West Hollywood City Council voted to yank Home Depot from its list of approved vendors for the 2026-27 fiscal year.

The stated reason? Allegations that the home improvement giant is “cooperating with ICE” and aiding President Trump’s deportation agenda. Never mind that Home Depot has repeatedly stated it is not actively working with immigration authorities in the way council members suggest. Facts, as usual in WeHo, appear to be optional.

It’s common knowledge that groups of day laborers, many of whom are in the country illegally, frequently gather in the parking lots and sidewalks outside Home Depot and other hardware stores hoping for cash-under-the-table work. This has been a fixture of the larger cities in America for decades.

But rather than address the actual issue of illegal immigration and its impact on communities, West Hollywood’s leaders have decided to punish the hardware store for the mere existence of these gatherings. It’s easier to virtue-signal against a corporation than to enforce the law.

Council member Chelsea Byers reportedly singled out Home Depot, claiming concerns over its alleged cooperation with federal immigration enforcement. The rest of the council went along, removing the retailer from the approved cooperative purchasing list while leaving other vendors intact.

Here’s where things get rocky for the taxpayer: Home Depot is one of the most competitive, fairly priced options for hardware, tools, and building materials in the state. By blacklisting it, West Hollywood is forcing city departments to source supplies from smaller, often more expensive “niche” vendors — all on the taxpayer dime.

This is government at its most self-destructive. Instead of getting the best deal for residents, WeHo’s leaders are torching a relationship with a major retailer that employs locals, pays taxes, and keeps prices down. Expect the difference to show up in the next budget report under “miscellaneous progressive indulgences.”

This removal certainly is not going to affect Home Depot. The corporation isn’t going broke over this decision. It has plenty of customers who care more about lumber prices than performative politics. But West Hollywood residents and businesses will pay the price through higher costs for city projects, from park maintenance to infrastructure repairs.

This episode perfectly captures the modern California left: obsessed with national immigration battles while ignoring the practical consequences right in front of them. They can’t control the border, but they can control which store the city buys nails from. Meanwhile, the day laborers will still show up, the federal government will continue enforcing immigration law, and West Hollywood will pat itself on the back for its moral superiority — all while quietly spending more of the citizens’ money. Welcome to governance in the People’s Republic of West Hollywood: where ideology is expensive, and taxpayers are always the ones left holding the bag.
