Turning Point Action Executive Criticizes AZ Secretary of State Fontes Over Election Website Promotion

Tyler Bowyer, chief operating officer of Turning Point Action, criticized Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes on social media accusing Fontes of promoting an election-related website that Bowyer said would contribute to “more chaos and delays in voting.”

In a post on X, Bowyer wrote that Fontes “is promoting a website that supports MORE chaos and delays in voting,” and warned that the approach would result in ballots being “mixed up from all over the state.” Bowyer did not identify the website by name or link to it in the post.

Turning Point Action is the 501(c)(4) advocacy arm of the conservative organization Turning Point USA and is active in nationwide voter outreach and election-related advocacy.

In recent months, Fontes’ office has been involved in several election-related initiatives and disputes, including opposition to federal demands for unredacted Arizona voter registration records as reported by The California Globe. The U.S. Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against Arizona in January seeking access to full voter roll data, a move state officials said raised privacy concerns.

Fontes has also requested additional state funding to upgrade election technology and cybersecurity following a previous cyberattack on a state-run election website.

Fontes’ office responded at the time by stating that the incident involved a malicious threat targeting a candidate portal and that Arizona’s statewide voter registration database was not compromised, according to AZ Free News. The office said it followed established procedures and coordinated with law enforcement and cybersecurity partners.

The secretary of state’s office recently updated Arizona’s Election Procedures Manual (EPM), which governs how elections are conducted statewide, triggering additional litigation, according to court filings cited by the outlet. An October ruling by the Arizona Supreme Court established the EPM process as lying outside the Administrative Procedure Act, keeping the current revision process in place according to the Arizona Capitol Times.

Legal challenges from the Arizona Free Enterprise Club and America First Policy Institute were ruled moot after Fontes’s office made changes to three provisions in the EPM, per State Affairs.

Bowyer’s post quoted a previous message from Fontes, which described azvotersfirst.com, a website promoting a “proposal to modernize, standardize, and prioritize the voting process for every eligible voter in Arizona.”

Fontes dismissed concerns over election integrity, writing, “2020 is done. The dust has settled, and the cases have been proven.”

Fontes also invited the public to learn more about the Voters First Act, which Bowyer described as “a statewide system of mixed-up ballots from all over the state, which causes counting delays.”

“He’s also promoting private, untraceable dollars being used as ‘grants’ in the SOS Office,” Bowyer wrote. “The most obvious push to have special interests, partisan and foreign interests, have influence over election procedures. I can’t begin to tell you how many radical, bad ideas come from this guy.”

As of this writing, neither Fontes nor the Secretary of State’s Office has publicly responded to Bowyer’s criticism.
