Senator Harris Calls for Federal Marijuana Decriminalization

Marijuana is Already Legal in 9 States

Senator Kamala Harris (D-Los Angeles) has been creating waves of news as she travels around the country in what appears to be a buildup for a potential 2020 presidential run. While she has been nothing short of silent voicing her opinion on Taxes, Brett Kavanagh and President Trump, the Junior Senator wants to make sure less prominent issues also stay relevant.

In the Senators latest declaration, the lawmaker has called for decriminalization of marijuana at a federal level. “With rising support for marijuana legalization, it’s clear we need to decriminalize marijuana at the federal level. It’s the smart thing to do” Harris stated.

According to a recent Gallup poll, “Sixty-six percent – or 2/3 Americans now support legalizing marijuana, another new high in Gallup’s trend over nearly half a century. The latest figure marks the third consecutive year that support on the measure has increased and established a new record.”

But perhaps what is even more stimulating, is the fact that for the first time a slim majority of Republicans support legal marijuana. Furthermore, strong majorities of younger adults have always leaned in favor of legalizing marijuana, however, the poll also indicates that number of Americans aged 55 and older has now surpassed the majority level, with 59% support, up from 50% last year.

Already legal in 9 states including the Senator’s home base of California, after this year’s elections recreational pot use could be allowed in another two more states depending on what voters decide in North Dakota and Michigan. Additionally, public officials in New Jersey are moving closer to ‘okay-ing’ legal marijuana and neighboring New York may not be far behind.

Besides the Midwest and South where only a few states allow medical marijuana use, public support is continuing to cultivate across the country. If this preference remains popular, we may see this develop into huge campaign points for our future leaders. For now, Senator Harris is on board.
