Is The Fix In? Gov. Newsom Announces Fire Damaged I-10 Freeway Will Re-Open Next Tuesday

Who are the contractors are for the I-10 emergency repair? Where are the cameras?

California Governor Gavin Newsom announced Thursday the I-10 Freeway in downtown Los Angeles may reopen Tuesday, November 21.

On Tuesday Nov. 14 of this week, the Globe reported:

Is Gov. Gavin Newsom trying to contain the I-10 fire story? Are the optics just a little too hot for his PR team? He looks and sounds really jumpy in his press conferences.

“Governor Gavin Newsom announced on Monday that the I-10 freeway fire, which has shut down a major traffic artery in Los Angeles since Saturday and will likely keep it closed for the near future, was caused by arson, with no suspect or suspects being currently being named,” the Globe reported Monday.

“The fire first began in the early hours on Saturday when a fire erupted at a wooden pallet storage yard near the I-10 freeway. The blaze quickly spread to around 8 acres, with the interstate being so damaged that steel guardrails and concrete pillars had begun melting. While the fire was ultimately contained by the LAFD and put out later in the morning with no injuries or loss of life, fire and transportation officials closed a portion of I-10 between the Alameda street exit and the I-5 interchange indefinitely.”

How did the story go from arson and a total shut down of the I-10 to Wow – we will reopen the freeway next week ahead of Thanksgiving!

Here’s what the governor says in his press release – they are awfully smug about this, as if they know something we don’t:

Leveraging an all-of-government approach with emergency crews working 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, today Governor Gavin Newsom announced the Los Angeles 10 Freeway is expected to reopen to traffic on Tuesday, November 21. While repairs are expected to remain ongoing for months, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has determined all five lanes of traffic in both directions can safely reopen to passenger and commercial truck vehicles by next week.

WHAT GOVERNOR NEWSOM SAID: “By working together with our federal and local partners and making this a 24/7 operation, the state is on track to open the 10 before millions of Angelenos hit the road for Thanksgiving. I’m grateful for the crews working around the clock to safely repair the 10 so we can get Los Angeles’ traffic moving in days instead of weeks.”

 

A friend who was in the concrete business asked “who are the contractors are for the I-10 emergency repair? Seems a simple thing to post [on the Caltrans website].”

Caltrans hasn’t caught up with the governor yet as their website says the I-10 won’t reopen until December:

Also notable is the several live full time video cameras declared by Newsom are missing. “Now they claim a possible opening early next week! I will be looking at CalTrans permit office if that happens to see the status of any overweight permits,” my friend said. “That will tell us if it is fixed or just  glossed over, like San Francisco.”

“Concrete technology in 1958 is far different than what we know today. I recall the rebar in the old Oroville dam spillway, it might pass for a home driveway today. This is California today, everything is suspect,” he added.

The Santa Monica Observer says it was people living in homeless camps under the freeway who were stealing electricity – sounds as if everyone knew this, and the city and state just allowed it… until someone went very wrong. And now the governor is attempting to rewrite the story and contain the damage to his presidential run.

Here’s how Caltrans reported the fire:

Just after midnight on November 11, the LA City Fire Department responded to what became a major fire in a pallet yard in the 1700 block of E. 14th Street near Downtown LA. The fire quickly consumed the yard, multiple trailers, and a second pallet yard under the I-10 Freeway. As a result, I-10 remains closed in both directions between Alameda Street and the US-101/I-5 interchange. You may still exit eastbound I-10 at Alameda Street.

The governor’s smug press release continues, with LA Mayor Karen Bass weighing in, clearly self-satisfied, having done nothing other than talk:

“This is what happens when we work with urgency. This is what happens when we come together. I want to make sure that there are no barriers to completely finishing the repair and that when the freeway opens up it will be completely safe,” said Mayor Karen Bass. “City departments will continue to respond with urgency to the impacts of the traffic closure during the ongoing construction. We will not let up. I want to thank Governor Newsom for joining forces with me to make sure the repair is being expedited to get the freeway back up and running as fast as possible.”

The announcement comes far ahead of schedule and was made possible because of the around-the-clock efforts of crews and engineers on and off-site, better-than-expected structural testing results, expedited debris removal, and close coordination between state, local, and federal government officials to safely expedite repairs of a major freeway that is a critical backbone to the American and global economy.

It should have read “The announcement comes far ahead of schedule and was made possible because of a frantic presidential candidate concerned California’s exploding homeless problem could hurt his campaign…”

However, the governor does note in the press statement, “As repairs continue over the coming months, the public should expect some temporary closures on occasional weekends and overnight, along with intermittent lane closures.”

UPDATE:  We were contacted by Izzy Gardon, Deputy Director of Communications | Office of Governor Gavin Newsom who said this:

[The Governor has spoken extensively about the site and answered questions about this. The 10 Freeway fire began on an Airspace site rented by Apex Development, Inc (Apex). Two months prior to the fire, Caltrans sued Apex, seeking to remove the company from the leased property for failing to pay its rent and subletting the property without authorization. A hearing is set for early 2024 in that lawsuit. Apex was responsible for maintaining the fenced-off site while they continued to assert rights under the lease. CAL FIRE’s investigation into the fire — suspected to be arson — remains ongoing and members of the public are encouraged to provide any leads or tips, which can be sent anonymously to the CAL FIRE Arson Hotline at 1-800-468-4408 or arsonbomb@fire.ca.gov.]

  1. I believe the Governor of California about the 10 freeway like I believe him about “safe and effective” vaccines; “ending homelessness”; etc. etc. etc.

    Newsom make Californians pay for all his face saving, ass covering, insider deals (Perkins Elmer laboratory in Valencia – hello!), and graft.

    To be honest, I prefer Los Angeles without the 10. It is a symbol of the racist, transphobic, genocidal, no-good-very-bad White supremacist past – and we won’t need the 10 soon anyway because gas cars will be banned (like gas powered landscaping equipment and incandescent bulbs).

    What we are gonna need are pack stations – for the mule, camels, and llama trains that will soon overtake the landscape moving what is left of this state to boats to foreign lands or inland for scrapping into fortifications built around fresh water supplies.

So Newsom and LA Mayor Bass claim that it was “arsonists” that burned some wooden pallets near the I-10 freeway and the resulting fire grew explosively and was so intense that concrete pillars, guardrails and even vehicles melted? The fire suspiciously started shortly after midnight and several live full time video cameras of the area are missing? Hmmm, what a coincidence? Maybe this “fire” was intentionally set by arsonists working for Democrats and the globalist deep-state using directed-energy weapons (DEWs)? Why would they do that? Maybe they wanted to get rid of the surrounding homeless encampments, destroy a vital vehicle transportation artery, create as much chaos as possible for SoCal commuters, and create yet another distraction from the mess that they’ve made of California? Meanwhile, Newsom and Democrat LA Mayor Bass smugly take credit for repairing the freeway ahead of schedule while covering for the destruction caused by their deep-state masters?

        1. Fires from meth heads are ubiquitous in Los Angeles. I have personally witnessed over six fires beside freeways this past year. I called 911 for two of them. As regards video footage “disappearing” – have you seen the footage shot by “OnScene.TV”? They are a professional stringer company and one of their photographers was there as the fire raged capturing exactly what was burning, where, how it was being fought, etc.

          There are lots, and lots, of rubbish fires in Los Angeles, especially since the 2020 lockdowns.

          I have a similar conversation with acquaintances all the time who are worried about directed energy weapons and foreign terrorists – what, exactly, are these exotic enemies going to do that our local elites, meth heads, criminal underclass, and moronic legal justice system are not already doing?

          I have been chased out of Los Angeles parks for … bringing a broom and sweeping up trash at the playground my kid was playing in. I have been threatened with arrest, during the lockdowns, for juggling a soccer ball alone in a large grassy field in and empty park. Do you think a scary space laser is what worries me, and what we should be losing sleep over? Please! Let the space lasers come! i have a few targets already picked out for them to light up next! Start with the RVs down the block, move to the piles of literal human excrement at the bus stop, and carry on to the mayors mansion.

Fires started beside freeways are not uncommon California but none of those fires have never burned as explosively and intensely as the fire that engulfed the I-10 freeway which was eerily similar to the fires that destroyed the town of Paradise in Northern California and most recently destroyed the town of Lahaina on the island of Maui. The nature of these fires is highly suspect and more than likely the work of the globalist deep-state as part of their destructive agenda to destroy everything in order to “build back better” with an authoritarian one world government? Federal, state and local Democrat and RINO elites, meth heads, the criminal underclass, and the moronic legal justice system all play a part in the destructive deep-state agenda?

          2. TJ – this fire is completely within the scope of a trash fire.

            It is worth noting other freeway closures due to massive fires.

            The 110 freeway was destroyed in 2014 during construction of one of Geoffrey Palmer’s apartments, the Davinci, in downtown by a deranged international meth dealer.

            The 60 freeway had an overpass destroyed by a tanker truck that blew up at the Paramount exit in 2011.

            The 5 near the 2 interchange in 2013 had a tanker truck burn up a tunnel and pouring flaming fuel into the LA River through storm drains.

            There is also the famous “Carmaggedon” in 2018 where the 405 was famously shut down.

          3. The burning of wooden pallets and other trash fires do not burn hot enough to melt concrete or steel beams?

            The other fires that shut down SoCal freeways that you mentioned involved tanker trucks containing highly flammable fuel. Even those tanker truck fires are suspect?

            Sounds like you refuse to acknowledge that there might be nefarious reasons as to why SoCal’s freeway are being shut down?

          4. The nefarious reason: Cloward Piven style revolution. Why use space lasers when fentanyl, methamphetamine, and the entire civil government do the work for you?

            The damage done to the concrete in the bridge: is not from pallets alone (there were liquid fuels and vehicles burning as well), is (from images and video) concentrated on some of the vertical pillars and shows signs of being baked from the outside not “burning concrete” (which I have not seen claimed in the media or press releases).

            I am not saying you are wrong about everything! I am quibbling with your extension to exotic and expensive means when the evidence supports cheaper more effective means of achieving the same ends.

          It would be interesting to find out (eventually) that perhaps L.A. City EVs bought from China, which were abandoned in that storage yard because they do not work, were part of the problem because the burning batteries increased the heat of the fire and the inability to put OUT the fire? This is because (as we have learned on numerous occasions) the fire keeps coming back to life much like a trick birthday candle after firefighters think they have put the fire out.

  3. Gee, do you think Gavin Newsom is trying to paint himself as a hero here? Previously he had announced “3-5 weeks” before the 10 Fwy would be re-opened. Meanwhile, traffic has been hellish, of course, with crazy detours and massive delays, and an unhappy public, which is an understatement. Now the 10 will be fully opened next Tuesday, says he? Oh sure!
    Is Newsom cynically copying the actions of Florida Gov Desantis after Hurricane Ian, who was lauded by the press and Floridians for rebuilding key roads and bridges in record time, in hopes that he, Newsom, will receive super-positive national press coverage as he campaigns for Prez? Kinda looks like it.
    This also might remind you of getting a $6,000 estimate(!) for a car repair, then later finding out the cost will only be $500. How happy and grateful are you to the mechanic when that happens? Meanwhile, are you just being played?
    What some of us have been hearing down here about this freeway repair —- out the mouths of people who know the Gov like a book and who have witnessed our crumbling CA, as most of us have for years and years —- is that we are definitely going to need qualified and vetted engineers and contractors and experts to come to CA from OUT OF STATE to inspect and weigh in on the freeway’s safety after it is “repaired.” Because we can’t trust the politicians and govt officials here anymore. So the Gov’s Tues re-opening announcement is even more of a shock than it was before.
    Looks like we’re being played, doesn’t it? Has Newsom decided to make lemonade out of lemons? Apparently that’s what he thinks. And only to serve his presidential campaign it seems. Sure hope people will be safe on that re-opened freeway.

        Yes, re being “played,” the Gov’s apparent move was to open with “the bad news” of 3-5 weeks, then pull that way back to look like a go-go-government hero politician as the rabble cheers (in his fantasies).
        We’re used to seeing him as “all hat and no cattle,” as Katy Grimes quoted recently. (Maybe in Newsom’s case “all hair gel and no brain.”) We know it’s all about how things look, with the insides not just empty but rotting and smelly. So slap some spackle on those pillars — if it looks good it IS good, right? But Newsom must have had SOME assurances that the freeway is safe to open. A collapsed freeway is not a good look for his presidential ambitions, you know? Without the presidential ambitions I don’t think he would care much. My husband said this morning in response to my cynicism, “he’s evil, but he’s not THAT evil.” Really? Why would we think that, given this guy’s record?

  4. Look closely at the damage on those support columns. Would you feel safe driving on that elevated freeway after only a few days of hastened repair? I suggest that Newsom holds his repair celebration directly under the center of the structure while there is heavy traffic above him. I want to be there to film his celebration but I will be using a very long telephoto lens.

    Wondering if the Gov’s Office of Communications contacts the Globe to request a correction every time —- or nearly every time —- an article is run about the governor? Or only this time?

  14. 1- Highly flammable material should never be stored under a major interstate highway. The state is wrong for allowing this. If Homeless and arson are the cause ,that should be made known to the public.
    2- The heavy fuel load burning under the freeway is what caused the damage to the concrete , resulting in spalling.
    3-Security paving must be a low bid state contractor. Security construction on Interstate 10 near me has been ongoing for 5 years. They are sloppy , all over the map and never finish anything. 3 or 4 of the new bridges are still half finished after 5 years. Traffic jams every day for 5 years where I live. Still half finished with no end in sight.
    4- I personally have never seen such poor workmanship from a contractor (Security Paving) in my life. After the earthquake in Northridge , Penhall had everything up and running within months not years.

  15. I know concrete and there is no way that level of damage could be properly repaired in just a few days. Maybe they could temporarily shore it up in that amount of time but repairs? No way!

      1. The columns have severe damage from intense heat. I strongly suspect the road bed is also severely damaged. The fix for the road bed would be far more involved than the column repair. Months of work, not days.

        1. Your assessment of what has happened here and what is needed to restore the structure makes a lot of sense. And I believe that was what was called for (although I can’t remember whether by engineer or politician) in the first blush of the aftermath —– MONTHS of repair work.

Seemingly in service to the “arson” narrative that would let certain politicians somewhat off the hook regarding homeless/vagrants living under the 10 Fwy in an unmonitored state-owned storage yard, “authorities” (CalFire?) have released a photo of a “person of interest” (“arson suspect” —- or so they say) leaving the scene of the 10 Fwy fire. These people in our govt ruling class expect us to swallow everything they put out there, don’t they, and no questions asked.

  17. It went real fast from arsonists to homeless, from being so hot that it couldn’t be repaired for weeks to to 5-7 weeks to less than 2 weeks.. something is fishy.

  18. The circumferal containment rebar exposed by degradation of the rigidizing concrete. Did heating cause expansion of the vertical rebar thus possible separation from the concrete?

    Does anyone remember the Florida condo collapse that was directly attributed to concrete/rebar separation?

    Exactly what caused the Miami FL condo collapse: Water and the ensuing rust caused rebar concrete separation.

    Any structural engineers among us willing to comment?
