Adam Schiff Gets in Schoolyard Tussle with Trump

President Ridicules Congressman’s Name

Congressman Adam Schiff’s surname kind of sounds like a curse word.

President Donald Trump and Congressman Adam Schiff (D-28) this week became engulfed in a fecal fracas. And neither man came out of it looking particularly good.

On ABC’s “This Week” Sunday morning, Schiff doubled down on contentions by Democrats and some legal scholars that the President’s appointment of Iowa lawyer Matt Whitaker as acting attorney general violates the Constitution because he was not confirmed by the Senate.

“I think the appointment is unconstitutional,” Schiff opined. “He is clearly a principal officer, and the fact that he is a temporary principal officer doesn’t mean that that is any less subject to Senate confirmation. Constitutionally it has to be subject to confirmation. I think they’d lose that court, that case, when it goes to the Supreme Court.”

About three hours later, Trump responded on Twitter, purposely misspelling the congressman’s name with a third-grader’s taunt.

“So funny to see little Adam Schitt (D-CA) talking about the fact that Acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker was not approved by the Senate, but not mentioning the fact that Bob Mueller (who is highly conflicted) was not approved by the Senate!”

Schiff, who represents Los Angeles, then tweeted back, “Wow, Mr. President, that’s a good one. Was that like your answers to Mr. Mueller’s questions, or did you write this one yourself?”

That’s a good one?

Schiff couldn’t come up with a better rejoinder than that cliched line?

He could have made a sly reference to lawyer George Conway, husband of White House counselor Kellyanne Conway just calling the Trump Administration “a shitshow in a dumpster fire.”

There were all kinds of possibilities.

Schiff, who is currently ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee and is expected to become chairman when Democrats take over the House this coming January, has clashed before with Trump on Twitter. The Committee is responsible for investigating Russian interference in the 2016 election.

On “Face the Nation” on July 23, 2017, Schiff said that, “I do think we need to look at each and every instrumentality the Russians have used elsewhere, some that we know that were used here, and determine, are there other ways that the Russians have sought to exercise influence? Because at the end of the day we need to make sure that our president is operating not in his personal best interests and not because he’s worried about what the Russians might have but because what he is doing is in America’s best interest.”

Trump fired back the next day on Twitter: “Sleazy Adam Schiff, the totally biased Congressman looking into “Russia,” spends all of his time on television pushing the Dem loss excuse!”
