Congress Dave Min (D-CA) faced criticism on Wednesday for comments on X going against White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, with some charging his remarks as being “Anti-Christian.”

The controversy dates back to earlier this week when President Donald Trump signed off on an Office of Management and Budget (OMB) memo issuing a pause of all federal grants and loans not in line with previous executive orders issued by Trump since his swearing in. According to the memo, “Federal agencies must temporarily pause all activities related to obligation or disbursement of all Federal financial assistance, and other relevant agency activities that may be implicated by the executive orders, including, but not limited to, financial assistance for foreign aid, nongovernmental organizations, DEI, woke gender ideology, and the green new deal.”.

The memo was polarizing, with some saying it was just a continuation of his policies and others saying that it threatened so many programs for needy Americans. However, many also charged that it was confusing, as it was too vague on what programs were and were not going to have their funding cut or reduced. Lawsuits by non-profit groups that receive federal money were filed soon after, with many asking for a stay on the freezes while the matter was settled in court. Leavitt, speaking for the administration, clarified on who would and wouldn’t be impacted by the freeze.

“I have now been asked and answered this question four times,” said Leavitt on Tuesday. “To individuals at home who receive direct assistance from the federal government: You will not be impacted by this federal freeze. Programs including Social Security benefits, Medicare, food stamps, welfare benefits and other assistance going directly to individuals will not be impacted under the pause. There is no uncertainty in this building. This is not a blanket pause on federal assistance and grant programs from the Trump administration.”

Despite the clarifications, U.S. District Judge Loren L. AliKhan temporarily blocked the freeze of the grants and loans on Tuesday. She specifically noted the vagueness of the order and will keep the order frozen until Monday, when a court hearing on it is scheduled to take place.

“It seems like the federal government currently doesn’t actually know the full extent of the programs that are going to be subject to the pause,” said Judge AliKhan in her order.

Facing growing criticism, the Trump administration rescinded the OMB memo on Wednesday, but said that the federal funding freeze will remain in full effect. The court order will now give them time to review programs for their compliance with President Trump’s agenda. In a statement on X, Leavitt clarified that while the administration rescinded the memo, they did note rescind the freeze itself.

“This is NOT a rescission of the federal funding freeze,” said Leavitt on X. “It is simply a rescission of the OMB memo. Why? To end any confusion created by the court’s injunction. The President’s EO’s on federal funding remain in full force and effect, and will be rigorously implemented.”

The administration’s decision to continue on with the halt of the programs angered many on Wednesday, especially for those who have programs that rely on those funds and grants that are likely to be cut. This led to Congressman Min making a controversial statement later in the day, calling Leavitt a “fake Christian”.

“Thou shalt not bear false witness…”. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt is a Fake Christian, like so many in this Golden Calf administration,” read Min’s post.

While other lawmakers criticized the Trump administration for continuing on, Min’s brought forth controversy, as it was seen as going after someone based on their religious beliefs. Some denounced his statement as being “anti-Christian” as a result.

“Dave Min’s shameful anti-Christian attack marks a new low even for him. Min’s ongoing meltdown makes clear he’s more focused on scoring MSNBC bookings than lowering taxes or crime for Orange County,” National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) Spokesman Ben Petersen said in a statement.

Others followed later in the day.

“Wow Dave, way to go after someone’s religion like that,” added an anonymous Congressional staffer to the Globe on Wednesday. “You know she’s a woman too. and white. Why not make fun of her for those things too while you’re at it.”

As of Wednesday afternoon, Min has yet to respond to the criticism over his message on X. However, many have noted that this is only his latest controversy of the many he has been a part of in only the last few years.

“I think Min learned the hard way to always have other people look at his tweets before sending them out,” said Malik Griffin, a Los Angeles polling analyst. “He has had a lot of things go wrong for him in recent years, the biggest of which has to be his DUI. He barely won the House seat last year because of it, and only won because the party dumped so much money into his campaign. The Democrats did not want someone taking over Porter’s old seat.

“The classy and sane thing to do would be to simply apologize for the tweet, remove it, then move on. That’s standard operating procedure. But he seems to be holding onto it right now. So, yeah, this has ‘yikes’ written all over it for him. There were so many other ways to say that he didn’t agree too, but he wanted to get the Trump administration insult bonus points it seemed.”
