‘Enough is Enough’ Citizens Rally Tuesday Opposing Sacto Tax Hike

A large group of fed up Sacramento taxpayers are holding a rally Tuesday morning at the Sacramento County Administration Building, 700 H Street, Sacramento, to fight a proposed tax hike in Sacramento County’s transportation sales taxes. This tax will appear as Measure A on the November Ballot, which is another one-half percent retail transactions and use tax on the already high 8.750% sales tax.

Here’s the scoop:

The placement of Measure A on the November ballot requires action by both the Sacramento
Transportation Authority (STA), a joint powers agency, and the Sacramento County Board of
Supervisors (County Supervisors). The STA board previously approved the ballot measure, but is now reconsidering its decision after tremendous public opposition and new polling. It has called a special meeting of the STA board for this Wednesday, July 15th to consider its own staff’s recent recommendation that the STA shelve Measure A in response to its recent internal polling that reports that the tax measure would fall far short of the 2/3rds majority vote required for its passage. (A previous attempt to double Sacramento County’s transportation tax, Measure B, failed narrowly four years ago.)

County Supervisors were scheduled on Tuesday, July 14, to consider placing Measure A on the
November ballot at its regular meeting. However, in response to the STA new, last minute staff
recommendation that Measure A be pulled (and the pending special meeting of the STA board on Wednesday to consider that recommendation), County Supervisors postponed Measure A from its Tuesday agenda and deferred action on the issue until its meeting on July 28th.

The Sac County Residents Against Measure A coalition includes the Sacramento Taxpayers
Association; the California NAACP; the National Action Network; the SacLatino Community
Roundtable; the California Retailers Association; the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association; the
Sacramento County Farm Bureau; Eye on Sacramento; local Chambers of Commerce; Pro Small
Business California; and a variety of other organizations.

The Coalition is pressing forward with its July 14th Rally to reaffirm the great public opposition to this tax hike during a pandemic and resulting economic melt-down to both the County Supervisors and STA. It is a regressive tax that harms those on fixed incomes and the economically disadvantaged, including the elderly, single parent households, and children.

Sacramento County Supervisor, and past President of the Sacramento Metro Chamber.
