While the American media has been near hysteria over the coronavirus, California Gov. Gavin Newsom is not. In a weekend press conference, Newsom was complimentary of the support he has received from the Trump administration, and specifically, the President himself.
Since Donald Trump was elected President, California Democrats and Gov. Newsom have clashed on most issues. However, Newsom appeared grateful for the President’s promise of support, and made it clear at the press conference that he was not going to politicize the coronavirus outbreak.
With a cruise ship waiting off the California coast near San Francisco with 21 passengers infected with the virus, Newsom was serious and affirmed that this was not the time for hyperbole as MRC reported:
“We had a private conversation, but [Trump] said, ‘We’re gonna do the right thing and you have my support, all of our support, logistically and otherwise.’ So before he made those statements publicly, I had a private conversation with him around 4:30 West Coast time. And he said everything that I could have hoped for. And we had a very long conversation and every single thing he said, they followed through on.”
“So I’m just not interested in finding daylight on those statements because every single thing his administration – and it starts at the top, including the vice president – has been consistent with the expectation that we’d repatriate these passengers and we’d do it in a way that does justice to the spirit that defines the best of our country and the state of California.”
Governor Newsom declared a State of Emergency March 4 to help prepare the state for broader spread of COVID-19. Newsom’s declaration was “to make additional resources available, formalize emergency actions already underway across multiple state agencies and departments, and help the state prepare for broader spread of COVID-19. The proclamation comes as the number of positive California cases rises and following one official COVID-19 death.”
The Center for Disease Control reports that California has 135 reported cases of coronavirus.
There are already 18,000 deaths this year from the seasonal flu, while 25 deaths this year from coronavirus.
In a press release Monday, Sacramento County announced that public health officials no longer recommend the 14-Day quarantine after exposure to the virus.
