A routine traffic stop in rural Lincoln County, Nevada, led to the arrest of an illegal alien found with more than 700 pounds of suspected fentanyl and methamphetamine—enough fentanyl alone to deliver approximately seven million potentially lethal doses, according to federal authorities.

On Tuesday, a Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office deputy stopped a pickup truck driven by 26-year-old Francisco Joel Garcia Farias on U.S. Highway 93 near Ash Springs after observing it exceeding the speed limit. A trained narcotics detection K-9 alerted to the vehicle. A subsequent search uncovered 13 large storage totes packed with vacuum-sealed packages. Officers recovered roughly 187 packages of a white crystalline substance totaling 677 pounds that field-tested positive for methamphetamine, along with 13 brick-shaped packages weighing approximately 30 pounds that tested positive for fentanyl.

Garcia Farias, identified by the Department of Justice as an illegal alien, faces federal charges of possession with intent to distribute 400 grams or more of a mixture containing fentanyl and possession with intent to distribute 500 grams or more of a mixture containing methamphetamine. If convicted, he faces a mandatory minimum of 10 years in prison and a maximum of life imprisonment on each count, plus five years of supervised release.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Steven J. Rose and is part of the Homeland Security Task Force initiative (HSTF). A criminal complaint is an allegation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Lincoln County, located in eastern Nevada roughly 100 miles north of Las Vegas and bordering Utah, is a sparsely populated rural area. Its estimated 2025 population is about 4,320 residents across more than 10,600 square miles of land, making it one of the least densely populated counties in the state. U.S. 93 serves as a key north-south corridor through the region.

First Assistant U.S. Attorney Sigal Chattah for the District of Nevada highlighted the scale of the seizure in a statement: “The massive scale of this seizure underscores the staggering volume of illicit narcotics flowing into our communities from transnational criminal organizations. Fourteen kilograms of fentanyl alone represents approximately seven million potentially lethal two-milligram doses—enough to kill more than twice the population of Nevada—and, when combined with over 650 pounds of methamphetamine, represents an estimated street value of approximately $2 million. These staggering quantities reflect a blatant disregard for human life, driven purely by profit.”

She praised the work of Homeland Security Investigations and the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office and said the office would continue efforts “to dismantle these dangerous criminal networks, secure our borders, and ensure that those who traffic these deadly substances face the maximum penalties allowed under the law.”

Attorney General Todd Blanche stated, “Anyone who plans to release a deadly drug like fentanyl onto American streets will be prosecuted. Thanks to the diligent work of federal and local law enforcement, the lethal drugs allegedly possessed by this illegal alien are no longer endangering the lives of countless Americans. The Department of Justice will continue rooting out illegal drug trafficking networks and keeping American neighborhoods safe.”

Lincoln County Sheriff Derek Foremaster said the case underscores the threat illicit drugs pose to rural areas and the traveling public, and he praised his deputies’ traffic enforcement and K-9 work, along with the partnership with HSI and the Homeland Security Task Force.

This Lincoln County seizure comes amid a broader Homeland Security Task Force crackdown in southern Nevada. Earlier this month, HSTF announced the results of Operation Loaded Dice, a three-month initiative launched in July that targeted transnational criminal organizations—including networks tied to the Sinaloa Cartel and Jalisco New Generation Cartel—operating in the greater Las Vegas area. Authorities arrested 144 suspects, seized 290 firearms (including machine guns), 1,124 kilograms of narcotics, and more than $1 million in cash and other assets.
