McCarthy Pushes House To Denounce Illegal Immigrant Voting

House Resolution 1071 Says Illegal Immigrants Voting ‘Devalues’ U.S. Citizens

This week the house will vote on a resolution from California Congressman Kevin McCarthy (R-23) who says letting illegal immigrants vote “devalues” votes cast by United States citizens.

McCarthy, who is the current frontrunner to be the next Speaker of the House—presuming the GOP holds on to its thinning majority—has not acknowledged if that quest is what motivated him to draft his resolution. However, it is believed the non-binding resolution is a reaction to the 2016 San Francisco decision to allow non-citizens and illegal immigrants to register to vote in school board elections.

According the Washington Examiner, the 2016 San Francisco ruling was meant to “reflect that a third of kids in public schools in that state (California) have a parent or guardian who is in the country illegally.”

McCarthy’s resolution 1071 does indeed note the San Francisco ruling as an example of devaluing votes of citizens while also pointing out that federal law prohibits non-citizens from voting in elections for federal office. “It is of paramount importance that the United States maintains the legitimacy of its elections and protects them from interference, including interference from foreign threats and illegal voting” the resolution states.

If the resolution passes the House, it will set a precedent that “allowing illegal immigrants the right to vote devalues the franchise and diminishes the voting power of the United States citizens.”

The resolution has not been scheduled for the floor, though a staffer from McCarthy’s D.C. office told the Globe they expect it to hit the floor this Thursday or Friday.
