Governor Brown Opens Climate Week In New York

World-Wide Leaders Gather in Big Apple to Combat Climate Change

By Sean Brown, September 25, 2018 2:01 pm

Following the Global Climate Action Summit that concluded on Sept. 14, today Governor Jerry Brown called for accelerated climate action at all levels and sectors of society during his remarks at the opening of Climate Week in New York City.

Joined by the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, heads of state from around the world, including New Zealand, Peru, Haiti and more, came together to propose new climate saving ideas.

“Ten days ago we closed the Global Climate Action Summit in San Francisco with strong new commitments and this week we carry that momentum across the country to Climate Week NYC,” said Governor Brown. “The path away from fossil fuels is daunting but California and like-minded partners will press on.”

Climate Week NYC, which is hosted by The Climate Group, builds on the wave of new climate action. Hundreds of new commitments from grassroots activists, mayors, governors, heads of industry and nonprofits and other climate leaders are put forward in an effort to combat global climate issues.

Although Brown spoke on many topics including how California continues to lead the world in adopting innovative policies, in much of his opening monologue he seemed to hype-up his own personal climate achievements. Just two weeks ago, he signed legislation setting a 100 percent clean electricity goal for the state, and issued an executive order establishing a new target to achieve carbon neutrality. Both orders to be fulfilled by 2045.

At the end of the Global Climate Action Summit just a week and a half ago, Brown announced huge plans that California would be launching its own satellite in an effort to monitor climate change. Today, after thanking other leaders for coming Governor Brown said he looked forward to the rest of the week and implied that there may be another similar announcement this week.
