Similarities Between California and the European Union

We examined some of the similarities between California and the European Union (EU). To begin, of course, California is a subnational state within a federal republic (the United States), whereas the European Union (EU) is a supranational and hybrid union of 27 sovereign member nations. Nonetheless, California and the EU share several key similarities in their governance, regulatory philosophies, and economic roles.

The following are some of the major similarities between California and the European Union:

Regulatory Influence and their “Effects”

Extraterritorial Reach: Both jurisdictions wield large global and domestic regulatory influence, which is often referred to as the Brussels Effect for the EU and the California Effect for the state. Because both represent massive consumer markets, companies often find it easier to build products that comply with California or EU standards globally rather than maintaining separate rules for different regions.

Precautionary Approach to Policy: Both governments lean toward proactive, human-centric, and precautionary regulatory frameworks regarding consumer protection, the digital economy, and environmental standards, setting them apart from more laissez-faire jurisdictions.

Alignment on Data Privacy and Technology

Data Privacy Laws: California’s California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) parallels the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in prioritizing individual data rights and transparency.

Independent Enforcement: Unlike most U.S. states that rely solely on state attorneys general for privacy enforcement, California created the dedicated California Privacy Protection Agency, mirroring the specialized regulatory and enforcement bodies common in European governance.

Artificial Intelligence Regulation: Both governments have collaborated and aligned on risk-based approaches to artificial intelligence, drawing similar structural lines for high-risk AI systems, watermarking, and testing.

Climate and Environmental Ambitions

Net-Zero Commitments: Both California and the EU have codified aggressive, legally binding climate targets. California aims to achieve carbon neutrality no later than 2045, while the EU has a legislated target to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

Supply Chain and Product Rules: Both entities enact strict environmental and material restrictions (such as bans on specific chemical additives in consumer goods or carbon-reporting disclosure mandates for large corporations) that compel external companies doing business within their borders to comply with those mandates.

Economic Scale and Global Standing

Massive Economic Footprint: California boasts an economy large enough to rival major European nations. If California were measured against EU member states, its gross domestic product (GDP)—ranking around €3.76 trillion—puts it second behind Germany and ahead of EU countries like France and Italy.

  1. California is doomed thanks to the corruption, grift and graft by the globalist WEF stooge Gavin Newsom and the criminal Democrat thug mafia that controls the state with an iron fist.
