Trump is a Threat to Democracy?

Democrats insist Donald Trump threatens American democracy. They fashion themselves as its protectors. Nonsense. It is the Democrat leadership which fears democracy and has threaten it repeatedly over the last few years.

An obviously diminished Joe Biden uses the alleged existential threat of Trump to style himself as democracy’s indispensable man, justifying him remaining in the Presidential race. Meanwhile, some Democrats are now talking of trying to remove Biden from the ballot after he won every state’s primary election and locked up enough delegates for the nomination. So much for respecting democracy. 

Hypocritically, they still talk about Trump. So how then does Trump supposedly threaten democracy? By getting elected they answer. Biden and the lesser Democratic leadership “protect” democracy by not letting people vote for one of the two major party candidates. 

That’s an odd way of “protecting democracy,” but was Democratic party policy in multiple states. Colorado ruled Trump ineligible for the ballot until smacked down by a unanimous Supreme Court. Democrat officials in Maine and the California legislature tried the same thing to no avail. But to be clear, although the efforts failed around the country, Democrat leadership tried to “save” democracy by keeping their opponent off the ballot. 

But what about January 6 and Trump’s assault on democracy that day? Surely, that shows Trump’s a threat. 

Hardly. January 6 amounted to an absurd, out of control riot on federal property led by absurd people. A few of those same people periodically showed up here in Orange County at our Board of Supervisors meetings to yell into the microphone. They are not a serious people, much less a serious threat to democracy. In no event did they came close to overthrowing the United States of America. 

Speaker Pelosi apparently rejected President Trump’s offer to send in the National Guard during this alleged grave threat to our Nation. Only one person, an unarmed protester, died in the melee. No doubt Capitol Police, had the threat been an actual coup, would have responded with considerably more force. The January 6 rioters would stand no chance against the US military. 

As further proof that the Democrats do not believe the lie about Trump’s supposed threat to democracy, consider that they have done much, across many elections, to prop up Trump-endorsed candidates. In particular, Democrats have spent money in multiple primary elections on behalf of Trump-backed candidates. That is odd behavior — supporting a candidate who you believe represents an existential threat to democracy — unless you don’t really believe it and just seek electoral advantage.

Sadly, this cavalier disregard for democracy has spread beyond attacks on Trump. Like every bad leftist idea, it has taken root in California. The State Supreme Court, just last week, issued a political opinion thwarting the rights of the electorate. The Court’s flimsy reasoning, belied by almost two centuries of precedent and internally inconsistent, served the interests of the Democrat-controlled legislature which brought the lawsuit. It used procedural slight-of-hand to deny the people a vote. Sacramento Democrats won and the voters – democracy – lost. 

Separately, the Governor and Democrats in the legislature worked tirelessly in the last few weeks to deprive you of a vote on Proposition 47 reform. That ill-conceived initiative from a few years ago has resulted in an explosion of crime. Yet Democrats bitterly opposed reform. They tried to stick poison pills aimed at the reform measure into various pieces of legislation, proposed a competing ballot measure, and threatened/cajoled the reform initiative’s proponents, all to stop you from voting on a fix.

And then there is the flood of blank ballots – sometimes multiple ballots per person – that Gov. Newsom sends every election to every Californian and to many who have left California. This is a true threat to democracy. The mass of ballots may be haphazardly “harvested” under California law but do not come with robust signature verification processes, entirely clean voting rolls, voter ID, or other safeguards. Sacramento perpetuates this genuine threat to democracy. And none of that is of Donald Trump’s doing.

So no, Donald Trump is not a threat to democracy. Our Republic will survive. It hopefully also survives the gaslighting about democracy from Democratic leadership shilling for a president too feeble for the job.
