Vaccinations in California Rebound Less Than 5 Years After SB 277 According to New Study

High-risk counties see the largest climbs in child vaccination rates

Less than 5 years after SB 277 was signed into law and removed personal belief vaccination exemptions for children in public schools, the number of vaccinated children in California has skyrocketed.

A recently released study in the the medical journal PLOS Medicine has found that measles, mumps, and rubella vaccines have seen a 3.3% increase in California, a similar declination of exemptions, and no major outbreak of diseases like the measles since the Disneyland case in 2014 – the very incident that sparked passage of SB 277.

Vaccination rates have also shot up from 92.8% in 2015 to 95% in 2017.

Child vaccinations also saw the largest climb in high-risk counties, where vaccination rates went up nearly 10%.

“This is really good news for California,” said Dr. Richard Nguyen, a pediatrician. “There had been an uptick of parents refusing to vaccinate their kids for all sorts of reasons, but now it’s getting back to normal.”

“Less kids are getting sick, and I’ve actually been getting apologies from parents who had formerly cursed me out over having to ‘be forced to vaccinate their kids’ because they believed the myth that they can cause autism or weaken them in some way. I actually got a voicemail last week from a mother of a child I do checkups on who said she was sorry for not believing me and ‘other doctors’ after her daughter had a recent measles scare.”

Recently passed laws such as the hotly contested SB 276, which cut back on the number of medical exemptions and now allows investigations on doctors who write more than 5 medical exemptions a year, also show that California lawmakers and citizens are gradually moving away from anti-vaccination beliefs.

“A large reason for the growth is that it’s now almost forced,” said John Graves, a policy expert in Los Angeles. “Parents aren’t given the choice anymore. The vast majority of parents believe in vaccines and want them for their own children because they don’t want an outbreak or to spread debilitating diseases. So parents who want to opt out are ostracized.”

“From the cases I’ve seen, other parents understand if it’s for a religious purpose or because there’s a medical reason like an allergy or something to the vaccine. They’ll just be more careful around the children who don’t have vaccines. But nearly all parents can’t stand those that don’t want to do it for the hell of it, or if they’re misguided.”

“This is a health and wellness issue, and it always has been. If it’s not for a legitimate reason, most parents think the person who doesn’t vaccinate doesn’t love their child. I’ve seen a lot of similarities between this and in the 70’s and 80’s when seat-belt buckling for children became a huge issue, when there were claims that the seat belts hurt their kids more than helped them.”

“But now we’re seeing the tide turn with those new studies. It just took a lot of time for some parents to start getting it.”

  1. There are reasons why people choose not to vaccinate. It is being forced, but that will not stop people from moving to a state that protects their rights. I also find it very ironic that unvaccinated children are ostracized and literally kicked out of places/ friend groups, yet the recently vaccinated can shed the virus and literally give it to someone. Thank God for people who are using their voice and not accepting the status quo. I will not be one to be forced.

    1. Totally agree with you! No one has the right to force anyone to inject God knows what into your body. I have never seen more sick people in my life…allergies, auto immune diseases, cancer, anxiety disorders, Autism, Parkinson’s…on and on. I don’t remember anyone having any of these issues when i was growing up. I was vaccinated in that time period when they vaccinated us with a vaccine tainted with cancer. The Italians did a study and tested over 20 vaccines, all but one were tainted with nano particles…not good. We live in a fear based world with corrupt, insane people leading us to the slaughter. If the rulers cared about us, we wouldn’t be eating processed food, breathing dirty air and drinking water spiked with fluoride. Believe what you want people, do what you want…but don’t try to force your fear and ignorance down my throat.

    2. Only a live virus vaccine could possibly shed and cause disease, and that is extremely rare. For other vaccine types, it is not possible for dead things to reproduce or for proteins to spontaneously reproduce an entire organism (it’s like assuming your toenail clipping will suddenly create a new you), so assuming that “vaccines shed” is a concept of nature that is pretty out there.

If you choose not to vaccinate you also have to accept that other people have the right to make their own decisions as well and not expose their child or themselves to risk of disease through contact with an unvaccinated individual. This is where anti-vaxxers start to sound really hypocritical. They talk about freedom and choice, but then want to force themselves on others and remove others’ choices. If you choose not to vaccinate others may want to exclude you. That is a consequence of your choice. Freedom to choose does not include freedom from consequence.

  3. Not a rebound. Just a captive audience. Those that don’t vaccinate aren’t counted here because they aren’t allowed in the schools. They don’t vaccinate, yet they don’t get the diseases. SB277 accomplished nothing but caused an exodus of taxpayers from California.

    1. Yes. Exactly. Those who would prefer to have control over their health decisions will move out of this state. No questions. Doesn’t matter what kind of “mass hysteria” the media creates, at the end of the day, those who know the truth will not do it.

    2. Vaccine rates are not captured through school systems unless the vaccine were delivered in the school, and in that case it would be combined with healthcare records from other care facilities. Even if vaccination rates were captured through school systems, the denominator would be adjusted for the birth cohort, or “school (specific grade) aged children”. Your argument doesn’t make sense based on how that data works. At all. This is the problem. I really do try to have intelligent conversations with anti-vaxxers, but I can’t seem to find one who actually understands the basics of the data or existing evidence. I haven’t even found 1 single anti-vaxxer who has read the Wakefield study to discuss it with me. Seriously. Not frickin joking. I’m trying to understand where anti-vaccine arguments come from but so far I have not been presented with a single piece of true evidence of their claims. At best I have been sent random anti-vaccine website links, youtube videos or really old scientific papers or papers that don’t say what the sender thinks they say. Where is the actual evidence of all of this harm you guys are claiming?

  4. ok, ummm, you don’t remember people being autistic when you were young because it wasn’t a recognized disorder until 1980. It then took years to train doctors in identifying it and as time has gone by we have added more and more conditions to the spectrum. Recognizing and accepting the biological base of anxiety disorders is also something that is relatively new. Very few people know anyone with Parkinson’s, today or when you were a child. And yes you knew people with allergies and cancer. Seriously? Auto immune disorders have been around forever as well.

It is nearly impossible to get anti-vaxxers to provide specifics or evidence, but I’ll assume that you are as informed as you say you are and ask you 2 questions. 1st, with 7 pre-approval clinical trials, 112 currently completed and ongoing clinical trials, and hundreds of observational studies do you have concerns with the evidence around Gardasil safety and efficacy and if so what aspect exactly and why?

2nd, with dozens of studies around the world showing no correlation between the MMR and autism, and no real evidence showing a correlation between these 2 things (remember that Wakefield’s study is really just a collection of case reports and does not contain a correlation or other evidence of cause), do you believe that there is a relationship between the MMR and autism? If so do you believe that there should therefore be a higher rate of autism in vaccinated children? If so, why is this not seen in the data in any country?

    1. We have evidence and specifics, it’s just a waste of time to explain them right here. You are set on labeling us as anti-vaxxers when we may well not be. Many “studies” are truly junk science and there was very serious fraud involving a study showing a correlation between the MMR and autism in African-American boys. One of the scientists even came out and admitted to what they did, but no one ever addressed it, and not to mention, the VAERS system only captures 1% of vaccine injury. Most doctors will not report a vaccine injury and are not trained to recognize one. We are NOT trying to force anything on anyone. We just want basic human rights. And if that means being discriminated against, we are going to fight.

  5. It’s funny you mention all these studies that somehow don’t show a correlation between vaccinated and children and autism. There has NEVER been a study comparing vaccinated vs. unvaccinated. And all of the trials done for these vaccines are NOT including a real placebo. There is NO evidence that shows injecting aluminum into humans is safe! We want REAL studies. Show us the science. Then maybe we will shut up. (Except we never will, because those studies are eventually going to show the truth.) Until you see vaccine injury right in front of you and choose not to deny it, sadly, most people will stay ignorant to this harsh reality that is permeating our nation.
