Feinstein Legacy Lives on as De Leon Goes Down

As January approaches, Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein will be heading into her 5^th consecutive term in the U.S. Senate as she defeats challenger Kevin De Leon.

At 85, the veteran Feinstein has routed 51 year old De Leon who served as the former State Senate Pro Tem. Though the race pitted two Democrats against each other, each candidate’s views on certain policies proved vastly different.

Campaigning on issues such as climate change, immigration and health care De Leon portrayed himself as a fresh face for Washington and proved to be a far more progressive candidate fighting for the younger generation. He is currently termed out in the state legislature and has not announced what his future endeavors will include.

The surprising inability to capture the Democratic Party’s nomination certainly didn’t hold Feinstein back as she was able to raise over $20 million in funding including $8 million of her own money. The Party’s decision to not back the more moderate Democrat incumbent should certainly serve to indicate which direction the party is going for the future. Furthermore, it is probable California Republicans helped Feinstein continue her legacy as they feared the lessor of two evils.

Despite coming under heavy fire during Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court nomination, Feinstein is poised to keep her position as the senior Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee. Though the Senate Republicans have gained several seats thus far, she is likely to remain an extremely influential figure in Washington.

During a speech at her victory rally Feinstein said “this is such a great country and its been actualized and criticized for its rhetoric, we must stop that, we must come together as the great power that we are for the good of the nation.”
