AG Bonta Announces ‘Surge in Reported Hate Crimes’ 8 Weeks After Creation of ‘CA vs Hate’ Hotline
‘Some examples of hate incidents can include: derogatory name calling, bullying, hate mail, and refusing service’

California Attorney General Rob Bonta just released the Hate Crime in California report Tuesday, prepared by the state Department of Justice.
In early May the Globe reported on California Governor Gavin Newsom’s official launch of CA vs Hate, “a new multilingual statewide hotline and website that provides a safe, anonymous reporting option for victims and witnesses of hate acts.”
What is a hate act? According to California’s new Department of Hate (CA vs Hate), “A hate incident is a hostile expression or action that may be motivated by bias against another person’s actual or perceived identity.”
“Some examples of hate incidents can include: derogatory name calling, bullying, hate mail, and refusing service.”
“CA vs Hate is in direct response to the rise in reported hate crimes in California, which in recent years, reached their highest levels since 2001 – jumping almost 33% from 2020 to 2021.”
So, according to Gavin Newsom, hate crimes have increased significantly since he’s been California’s Governor, jumping almost 33% from 2020 to 2021.
Some experts say there are political forces who want this crime and anarchy to continue, because if the crime, anarchy and chaos is solved, Democrat politicians will lose power and influence.
It’s not difficult to ask “Why is California is leading the nation in these hate crime attacks?” and conclude that under Newsom’s divisive reign, hostility, anxiety, fear, and hate are exploding. His policies are destroying Californians’ quality of life, as well as the destruction of the once-Golden State.
AG Rob Bonta announced Tuesday that hate crimes increased again from 2021 to 2022 by another 20%. According to the report, a hate crime refers to a criminal offense against a person or property motivated in whole or in part by an offender’s bias against a race, religion, disability, sexual orientation, ethnicity, gender, or gender identity.
According to the hate crimes report, the term event is defined as an occurrence where a hate crime is involved. The term offense is defined as criminal acts that are recorded as follows: murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, arson, simple assault, fondling, kidnapping/abduction, intimidation, destruction/vandalism, false pretense/swindle, hacking/computer invasion, and weapons law violation as defined by the FBI. AG Bonta reported:
Reported hate crime events increased 20.2 percent from 1,763 in 2021 to 2,120 in 2022. (Table 11) Reported hate crime offenses increased 16.6 percent from 2,221 in 2021 to 2,589 in 2022. (Table 12)
The number of victims of reported hate crimes increased 13.5 percent from 2,180 in 2021 to 2,474 in 2022. (Table 15)
The number of suspects of reported hate crimes increased 22.8 percent from 1,654 in 2021 to 2,031 in 2022. (Table 15)
The number of hate crimes referred for prosecution increased 5.9 percent form 611 in 2021 to 647 in 2022. Of the 647 hate crimes that were referred for prosecution, 456 cases were filed by district attorneys and elected city attorneys for prosecution. Of the 456 cases that were filed for prosecution, 282 were filed as hate crimes and 174 were filed as non-bias motivated crimes. (Table 7A)
That’s a lot of hate, but nowhere is there an explanation why.
“Throughout 2020 there was a rise in violence against Asian-Americans, but the race of the perpetrators was typically mentioned only when they were white,” Robert Woodson wrote in the Wall Street Journal in 2021. “Media and other elites obsessively push the narrative that the greatest threat in this country is coming from “’white supremacists.’ This gross oversimplification has dire consequences for the most vulnerable in our society—those living in the poorest neighborhoods—and for the nation as a whole.”
Robert Woodson is founder and president of the Woodson Center and author, most recently, of “Lessons From the Least of These: The Woodson Principles.”
“Yet the U.S. is the world’s most prosperous and harmonious multiracial society. We have some serious problems we must address, but we can’t solve them unless we’re willing to speak about them honestly,” Woodson said.
The United Nations says “hate speech is a growing international threat,” so at least we know where AG Bonta is getting his tutorials on “hate.”
California Civil Rights Department Director Kevin Kish said in May, “With the launch of CA vs Hate, we’re taking action to help put a stop to hate…” …as if creating a new agency will do anything at all.
According to Bonta’s report, most of the hate events and offenses occur at:
Air/bus/train terminal (50 events), (53 offenses)
Church/synagogue/temple (83), (111)
Commercial/office building (44), (47)
Convenience store (51), (60)
Parking lot/garage (153), (186)
School, elementary/secondary (157), (168)
School, college/university (82), (98)
But far and away, they take place at:
Residence/home/driveway, (458), (617) and
Highway/road/alley/street (491), (588).
As for the counties:
Los Angeles County had the most hate events and offenses: 857 events and 994 offenses.
Alameda County had 109 events and 132 offenses.
Orange County had 110 hate events and 135 hate offenses.
Sacramento County came in at 114 hate events and 135 hate offenses.
San Diego County had 105 hate events and 130 hate offenses.
San Francisco County had 41 hate events and 64 hate offenses.
Santa Clara County had 191 hate events and 228 hate offenses.
Amador County had 1 hate event and 1 hate offense, as did Siskiyou County, Mariposa County, Nevada County and Tuolumne County.
The counties with zero hate crimes: Mendocino County, Alpine County, Calaveras County, Inyo County, Modoc County, Mono County, Plumas County, and Sierra County.
It is notable that the report shows many expansions to California’s hate crime definition (note the years: all during Gov. Jerry Brown’s third and fourth terms):
“In 2011, the DOJ expanded the acceptable location codes for the California hate crime data collection system to reflect modifications implemented at the national level.
In 2013, the DOJ expanded the gender bias for the California hate crime data collection system to include gender non-conforming in order to reflect modifications implemented at the national level.
In 2014, the DOJ expanded the religion bias for the California hate crime data collection system to include Sikh in order to reflect modifications implemented at the national level.
In 2015, the DOJ expanded the race and ethnicity bias for the California hate crime data collection system to include Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander in order to reflect modifications implemented at the national level.”
Anti-Black hate crimes made up the largest share throughout the state, accounting for 652 hate events and 772 hate offenses, of a total 2,120 events and 2,549 offenses.
Again, why? Who is committing these hate crimes and offenses?
According to Heather MacDonald of the Manhattan Institute, writing at City Journal in April 2023, “The narrative that blacks are at elevated risk for ‘existing while black’ is true, but not because whites are killing them. Their assailants are other blacks, which means that these black victims are of no interest to the race activists and to their media and political allies.”
MacDonald, the author of The War on Cops:How the New Attack on Law and Order Makes Everyone Less Safe, continues: “In 2021, 87 percent of all non-lethal interracial violent crimes committed between blacks and whites in the U.S. were black-on-white—480,030 incidents with a black offender and white victim, and 69,850 incidents with a white offender and black victim, or seven times as many black-on-white as white-on-black incidents of interracial non-lethal violence. In other words, whites have more to fear from blacks than blacks from whites, a fact contrary to the race-hustle narrative.”
She also notes crimes “‘while Asian’ incidents are chronicled here, including a 75-year-old man fatally knocked to the ground and robbed while taking his morning walk in Oakland; an 84-year-old man fatally knocked to the ground in his driveway; a 67-year-old man kicked to the ground, dangled upside down, beaten, and robbed in a San Francisco laundromat; and an 88-year-old great-grandmother, beaten so brutally as to be unrecognizable and discarded next to a recycling bin.”
“In virtually none of these ‘while Asian’ incidents was the race of the suspects reported, because those suspects were black. The media not only omit a detail that would be automatic if the suspects were white but also compose a racial narrative about anti-Asian crimes and anti-Asian hate crimes that is wholly false: that it is whites who are the threat to frail, elderly Asians.”
MacDonald also addresses crimes “while white,” “while Hispanic,” as well as “while Asian.”
“The anarchy in American cities is carefully de-raced,” she says. “To name a suspect’s race when that suspect is black is virtually taboo, no matter the race of his victim. Let a white person assault or kill a black person, however, and the entire story will be about race.”
Bonta’s report is woefully devoid of important detail if societal changes are to be justly addressed.
As MacDonald concludes, “This double standard and the fiction that blacks are under daily risk of their lives from whites do no one any good, least of all the victims of black crime.” She says this “further poisons race relations, incentivizing more anti-white violence. It creates fertile support for the dismantling of law enforcement and of the meritocratic standards that are said to prop up white supremacy.”
Rob Bonta wants to be governor – the voters of California will need to make sure he fully owns this hate crime report. Hate Crimes under his definitions escalated during his time as an Assembly member in the State Assembly, and as California Attorney General.
The claim that by reporting hate acts and hate speech to the California Department of Hate will “put a stop to hate” is patently absurd and merely state-sanctioned grievance hustling – on the taxpayer’s dime.

It seems hate is like racism – the supply has had to be increased to meet the demand
Great point.
Is CA serious? You’re talking about a couple thousand incidences out of a state with almost 40,000,000 people in it; and likely billions and billions of personal interactions a day. This is statistical noise as far as I’m concerned; and another “we must do something” moment for the idiots that are in charge of this state.
AG Bonta and Democrats are experts at fomenting hate and division? Democrats are the party of slavery, segregation, Jim Crow laws, lynchings, KKK, etc.
Next statistic needed:
Carry permits for each county.
My money is on the rural counties that still have shot guns in the back window of their pick ups.
A lot less hate in Alpine county!!!!
It does appear that characters like Gruesome and Bonta et al THINK they are helping to set the stage for something sinister to be done here such as creating a pretext for rounding up all the “haters,” for instance. We’ve certainly had plenty of hints that this is the goal, and of course only sensible people are the target, not the actual nasty haters who are constantly in the faces of the sensible people.
It remains to be seen, of course, but I think these people are delusional and I doubt very much they will achieve their goal, if that is their goal, which it probably is, haters that they are. It will be fought and surmounted every step of the way.
Indeed, the demand for racism greatly exceeds the supply. So Democrats have to go looking for new ways to manufacture it. And based on the reports from this “hate hotline”, it appears “hate crimes” largely amount to “someone said something that I hated”. Yeah….and they wonder why so many people in this state are constantly on the verge of breaking out into unhinged rage. We are all being driving to the brink but the incompetently evil people that run this state.
Hate crimes against Blacks. Hate crimes against Mexicans. Hate crimes against Asians. My personal assumption is that whites are causing all the hate crimes but most of them have already left the urban areas where all the hate crimes occur.
