Gov. Newsom and Democrats Fast-Track New Gun Control Bills

‘Our policy leaders advertise ‘gun free zones’ inviting those people to do what they do’

“Before parents had even identified their dead children after Tuesday’s horrific school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, California Gov. Gavin Newsom Tweeted about gun violence and crowed that California’s gun control laws work, implying there would be more to come,” the Globe reported. Then Newsom held a press conference immediately to announce he would be signing the 12 new gun control bills lawmakers drafted overnight, and said “when California moves, other states move.”

Newsom is making good on his promise.

Judiciary Committees in the Assembly and Senate Tuesday passed two of the Governor’s sponsored gun safety bills. “The Committees passed legislation creating a private right of action to limit the spread of illegal assault weapons and ghost guns (SB 1327), as well as a bill restricting advertising of firearms to minors (AB 2571). The action comes at the urging of the Governor and legislative leaders following the tragic elementary school shooting in Uvalde, Texas that left 19 children and two teachers dead,” the Governor’s press statement on Tuesday said.

Sam Paredes, Executive Director of Gun Owners of California, told the Globe last week that none of the new gun control bills proposed by Newsom in California would have prevented the recent school shooting in Uvalde, Texas. “Absolutely none of the bills in California or the new ones in Washington D.C would have any impact on the Uvalde, Texas school shooting,” Paredes said.

Yet Gov. Newsom insists California’s many gun control laws have kept Californians safer than other states. He cited a PPIC report which places California in 17th place for mass shootings. “Compared to citizens of other states, Californians are about 25% less likely to die in mass shootings. Between 2019 and 2021, the state’s annual mass shooting homicide rate of 1.4 per one million people was lower than the national average of 1.9,” the PPIC said.

Except during the pandemic, homicides in California increased dramatically.

“There have been more mass shootings in the U.S. in 2022 than days in the year,” California Attorney General Rob Bonta said Tuesday.

Of the 267 mass shootings in the United States January to June 2022, the Globe counted 23 “mass shootings” in California alone, according to Gun Violence Archive 2022.

And notably, with Propositions 47 and 57, which decriminalized many violent felonies, California criminals are let out of jail or prison early, or never charged, and commit additional crimes, as happened with one of the suspects arrested in connection with the recent gang-related mass shooting near the California State Capitol. The suspect “served less than half of his 10-year sentence because of voter-approved changes to state law that lessened the punishment for his felony convictions and provided a chance for earlier release,” Yahoo reported.

“California has led the nation in reforming our laws to protect communities from gun violence,” Gov. Newsom said Tuesday. “This year is no different as we take decisive action to fast-track vital gun safety policies, even as recent federal court decisions threaten to make it more difficult to protect Californians from gun violence. Since the 1990s, our laws have prevented countless shootings and saved hundreds of lives. California isn’t waiting for Congress to act to protect our kids from needless gun violence.”

It’s not “gun violence” – the favorite expression by gun control advocates. Guns can’t fire themselves. Criminals are using the guns – usually illegally obtained – to commit their violent crimes.

California’s Democrat lawmakers introduced their package of gun control bills, never letting a crisis go to waste:

  • SB 1327 (Hertzberg) would allow private citizens to sue gun manufacturers, distributors and traders for dealing assault weapons, .50 BMG rifles or ghost guns. The bill is sponsored by Governor Newsom.
  • SB 906 (Portantino) would mandate school officials to report perceived threats of a mass shooting to law enforcement and require school districts to disseminate safe gun control storage information.
  • SB 915 (Min) bans gun shows and firearm sales on state property.
  • SB 1384 (Min) demands that gun dealers install video surveillance systems at their business sites.
  • AB 2571 (Gabriel) outlaws advertising of firearms in manners that attract minors.
  • AB 1594 (Ting) would allow the State Attorney General and individuals to sue gun manufacturers and sellers for harms.
  • AB 1621 (Gipson) would further crack down on sales of ghost guns. Governor Newsom has signaled his full support for this extensive package of gun control legislation.

Another PPIC report on the increase in California homicides during the pandemic focused on crime numbers for Los Angeles, Oakland, San Diego, and San Francisco between January 1, 2020, and January 31, 2022: “Driven by gun-related deaths, the number of homicides increased by more than 500 statewide in 2020, the largest increase since the beginning of consistent crime recording in 1960. The number of aggravated assaults increased by 12%, and those involving a firearm jumped by almost 40%.”

The PPIC continued:”The number of homicides in San Diego remained unchanged in 2021, while Oakland’s jumped by 36%, and San Francisco and Los Angeles saw an increase of 17% and 13% respectively.”

“Robberies decreased statewide in 2020 by 14%, but rose by about 4% in 2021 in the four major cities. This was driven by a notable jump in Oakland—almost 20%—along with a 6% increase in Los Angeles. These increases brought numbers back to roughly where they were at the beginning of the pandemic. San Francisco and San Diego saw continued decreases in 2021, of 6% and 3% respectively.”

As for the two bills passed Tuesday, Sam Paredes explained:

AB 2571 Bauer-Kahan Firearms: Advertising to Minors. Will make it illegal to advertise any firearms stuff to minors. Author claims that manufacturers have been advertising with teddy bears to reach kids. The fact is that this will probably have a devastation impact on all materials focused on youth safety programs and even advertising to minors who are in training for future scholarship programs to major universities and Olympic Shooting teams. She did say that if gun manufacturers pay for product placement in violent video games that the would be in violation. Huge 1st Amendment problems as well as 2nd Amendment problems.

AB 1594 Ting Firearms Civil Suits: Allows basically anyone to sue a manufacturer, wholesaler or dealer whenever a firearm is used to commit a crime. Enhanced version of the Texas abortion issue. They either lie through their teeth or are legally illiterate when the do acknowledge that the only thing SCOTUS did regarding the Texas case is that they did not issue a stay on the law while it was making its way through the legal process. They DID NOT rule on the constitutionality of the Texas abortion law. So if SCOTUS ultimately declares the Texas law unconstitutional, then this bill will also be unconstitutional.

“The vast majority of all mass shootings take place in target rich environments – gun free zones,” Paredes said, “where the shooters are willing to commit a gross act of evil, and commit the highest body count they can.”

“Our policy leaders advertise ‘gun free zones’ inviting those people to do what they do.”

  1. How about enforcement of existing, end govt sponsored ‘shootings’… Show us you care (lol)
Hunter Biden lives in Malibu, CA… Haleigh painted him as a ‘PEDOPHILE WITH HOMICIDAL TENDENCIES’
Lied on his app (Felony), She threw his gun in a dumpster, near a school
Hunter revealed: “DAD HAS 5 GUNS AT HIS HOUSE’ (easily accessible to Hunter)
Nothing says ‘Fear the People’ like gun confiscation ‘for your safety’… We have a Constitution and Bill of Rights, ” “SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED” Oaths were taken to defend them… Abide or resign.
    “SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED”

    1. And notably, with Propositions 47 and 57, which decriminalized many violent felonies, California criminals are let out of jail or prison early, or never charged, and commit additional crimes.
This is the REAL REASON. Repeal these two laws. Arrest felons for using firearms’ in crimes and don’t toss out the gun charges like the Soros DA’s do immediately. Enforce the existing 20,000 laws pertaining to firearms that exists at the state federal and local level.

      1. That’s right, California has had more mass shootings than other states, yet has the 6th-lowest death by firearm rate in the US. Mass shooters in California, much as they try, are much less efficient at killing people. Isn’t that, oh Math Sufficient Fascist One, exactly what should happen if gun laws are effective?

Five states have a lower death-by-gun rate than California. They are: Hawaii, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Rhode Island and New York. Guess what all these states have in common?

    2. For the math/deficient, 25% less likely than other states means 75% MORE LIKELY than other states. See totals for mass shootings by state and CA:

Here are the 10 states with the most shootings 2022. Governor Mussolini lies with the best of them.

  2. Warning to all living outside of California, supermajorities have the power to rig elections, misspend tax dollars, withhold water to farmers and aid criminals the ability to have free reign!
Do not let this happen to your state!

    1. Cali Girl-
Your voice is falling on deaf ears. Many people in states like Texas think the answer to all their problems is to not allow conservative Californians to move to Texas, even though those California ex-pats vote more conservatively than native Texas do. It’s a shame that these folks prefer to simply vent as opposed to doing some research on the facts and having a clue about what’s actually going on. In a way, they are allowing what has happened in California to happen in their beloved state of Texas.

  3. I cannot say it any better than Marilyn Midura did. The laws are there the government is not enforcing them. The young shooter in New York that killed people in the grocery store had spent time in a mental health facility and was still able to buy a gun.

    1. Hunter “SNORT” Biden, LIED on his NICS form to purchase a firearm…FELONY…his idiot wife dumped it in a trash can by a school…LOADED. “Equal justice under the law”….yet one more that has hit the shredder.

  4. We all agree that criminals are not stopped from owning guns by adding MORE laws that break the second amendment.
So, the fact that Newsom has emptied the prisons on to our streets, he should not be surprised when criminals use guns in crimes.
Do not punish legal gun owners.
I cannot believe how the mainstream media and its consumers fall into lock step for whatever the ‘shiny keyed’ distraction they echo out today.
Let’s just keep doing the same thing since it has not worked yet.
    Sounds familiar

  5. I believe I saw a $1 million dollar jewelry store heist recently in NJ. I saw Obama’s kids abusing, beating and robbing. Now you tell
Me then having a gun would not have changed the outcome! How about keeping criminals off the streets, Nono said our elected officials (ha that’s laughable too fraudulently elected officials is more like it). Now you want us to be abused, beaten and scared while police refuse to help amd protect children in uvalde. Ok this is buzzard world. Now on top of that you want a red flag law. So how about dude that think their chicks and are offended by “words” or they say pronouns; how is this believable. How are these people not walking red flag laws; they are confused, fragile and on massive hormone and other medications. I’m sorry but none of this is common sense any more that was lost when kids started being indoctrinated at school vs educated in math, reading and science. Time to eliminate education dept, health dept (not like we trust doctors any more they are worse than then consider alphabet group.

  6. Now that they won the primaries…thanks to mail in ballots and drop boxes….on to enforce more tyranny.

  7. Gov. Newsom, who is one of Klaus Schwab’s World Economic Forum’s globalist boytoys, and the rest of the deep-state Democrat cabal are protected by armed security 24/7 and hide behind gated compounds with high walls want to disarm law-abiding California citizens? It’s what petty leftist authoritarian and totalitarian dictators do?

  8. Be sure to follow, pretty sure they’ll chew him up and spit him out…

‘COULD GET… INTERESTING”: Gavin Newsom Explains Why He Joined Trumps Truth Social (foxnews.com)

Newsom prefers “SILENT MURDER”: Abortion/Infanticide; Vaxx mandate (children), lockdowns, hospital protocol (Remdesivir/Vent), nursing home policies; drug/fentynal overdoses; illegal alien (Kate Steinle)/social justice reform (2 El Monte police); trans hormone therapy (future suicide)

    1. You hit the nail on the head, Marilyn Midura, re Newsom’s preference for “silent murder.”

  9. Typical of a one party state with a corrupt media, they are able to ignore the big problems and work on silly incremental unconstitutional challenged rather than the big problems:
California population has doubled since the ‘70’s. Housing prices are outrageous.
We have shut down additional water storage projects, now we are running out of water.
We have refused to build power plants to keep up with growth, now we are running out of electricity.
We have closed more prisons than we have built, and now crime is rampant and out of control.
All of this because no one wants to lead. Why should they? What is in it for them? Voters seem to be surprisingly impotent at election time!
