‘The Current LA Riots are an Example of Your Tax Dollars Hard at Work’

With Los Angeles under siege, who will call off 2028 LA Olympics?

By Katy Grimes, June 9, 2025 1:31 pm

With the Los Angeles riots continuing into the fourth day, California Governor Gavin Newsom and Attorney General Rob Bonta have announced they are suing President Donald Trump for federalizing the California National Guard. President Trump did this to assist Los Angeles law enforcement with the rioting in LA because Newsom wouldn’t, proving one more time that leftists are petulant children.

Even the Los Angeles police chief said his officers were overwhelmed. And Governor Newsom did nothing.

The riot images are horrific.

LA Rioters lit Waymo taxis on fire.
LA Rioters hurl large rocks from overpasses at Police cars.

Now, picture this: The City of Los Angeles is scheduled to host the Summer Olympics next, in 2028.

In March, the Globe reported:

“It takes a decade to prepare for the influx of athletes and tourists, the Council on Foreign Relations recently explained.

Is Los Angeles really already 7 years into preparations, with 3 of those years under Gavin Newsom’s statewide covid lockdown?

Many are concerned whether the State and the City will be prepared for this venture, and if not, could be a disaster be waiting to happen?

This was only two months after the devastating fires in Pacific Palisades and Malibu. And at the time, the LA Mayor had just admitted to a $2 billion dollar deficit and traveled to Sacramento to ask for state funds to close her budget chasm.

We noted at the time that the Newsom Administration budget was somewhere between $40 billion and at least $80 billion in deficit. Since then, Gov. Newsom claims the budget deficit is only $12 billion.

But he has committed to state funds to assist with the LA28 Olympics?

California Attorney Laura Powell also questioned if there are any adults who will step in and call off the LA28 Olympics. “Or are they deliberately setting it up for a disaster of historic proportions?”

Powell however, really blew the lid off of the funders of these riots:

“If you are a Californian, the current LA riots are an example of your tax dollars hard at work. The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Right—CHIRLA—is one of the key players in fomenting the violent response to immigration enforcement actions. It’s an LA-based nonprofit with a history of taking radical positions on immigration; for example, it led a 2018 campaign to abolish ICE. It currently leads the Los Angeles Rapid Response Network, which gathers intel about enforcement actions and deploys activists to respond. CHIRLA has strong ties to the Democrat Party in California and has supported the election of Democratic candidates through its lobbying arm. It has a particularly close relationship with Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass. The organization also has a close relationship with organized labor in the state, which in turn is a major financial supporter of Democrat politicians. On Friday, amid rising tensions, CHIRLA held a rally protesting ICE’s enforcement actions and the arrest of SEIU President David Huerta for obstruction. The incredible part is that CHIRLA’s activities are primarily funded by California taxpayers. I obtained a financial audit that shows that for the fiscal year ending June 2023, it received $34 million from the state, mostly through the Department of Social Services, accounting for 72% of its total revenue. This was nearly a three-fold increase over the previous year. CHIRLA also received a $450,000 federal contract in 2023, which Mayor Bass publicly took credit for helping secure. DHS froze funding in February, which prompted a lawsuit from CHIRLA. DHA then canceled the contract, and the lawsuit was then dismissed. Eisenhower warned of the military-industrial complex—now we face a nonprofit-industrial complex.”

The Globe has covered CHIRLA in the past, and their $34M in government funding. I dug into their IRS filings: The the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA), lists that it received $33,966,572 in government grants on its 2023 IRS Form 990, and $10,628,376 in “All other contributions, gifts, grants, and similar amounts not included above,” for a grand total of $44,760,434.

So did Jen Van Laar at RedState:

“Things might have stayed somewhat contained but for the involvement of two powerful and high-profile leftist community ‘leaders.’

One of those people, SEIU California President David Huerta, was arrested for interfering with federal officers after he got in the way of ICE officers. After his arrest, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, California Gov. Gavin Newsom, Rep. Gil Cisneros, and other Democrat elected officials decried the action.

Then Angelica Salas, Executive Director of the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA) held a press conference calling for broad demonstrations against ICE, and tensions and violence escalated from there.

Hundreds of “protesters” turned into thousands of rioters before long, complete with matching t-shirts and professionally printed signs, signaling the involvement of organizations with some degree of funding behind them.

As Data Republican found, CHIRLA and the Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSLWEB) are two of the NGOs implicated in this ongoing riot.”

U.S. Attorney in Los Angeles Bill Essayli announced his office is investigating who is behind these coordinated attacks. In an interview with Fox News, reporter Bill Melugin asked Essayli about the federal arrest of SEIU California President David Huerta, for allegedly interfering with ICE agents in Paramount on Friday. “I asked Essayli if that arrest is meant to send more of a ‘don’t interfere with our guys’ message, or if he’s actually looking to put Huerta in federal prison? Essayli told me the federal agents had no idea who Huerta was when he was arrested, and that he will receive no special treatment. Yes, he will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law and the same will happen to anyone else who interferes, Essayli said. Essayli also told me his office has many open investigations into looters, rioters, arsonists, and rock/stone throwers, adding that every piece of available video and social media will be combed through and that the targets shouldn’t feel comfortable just because they haven’t been arrested. ‘It’s coming,’ he said.”

Lastly, according to Berkeley law prof John Yoo, “President Trump has the law firmly on his side, thanks to the Constitution.”

“There is a long and important tradition in our country, expressed in the Posse Comitatus Act, against using the military for domestic law enforcement. (BTW, readers of “Political Questions” likely know that Congress enacted the PCA to withdraw federal troops from the South and end Reconstruction as part of the deal to resolve the 1876 elections — but that is another story). But there are exceptions, such as protecting the national government and its operations and breaking up resistance to federal law, which are authorized by the Constitution itself or in the Insurrection Act. The Supremacy Clause of the Constitution makes clear that federal law is superior to state law; California’s officials and residents have no right to block the enforcement of federal immigration policy, no matter how much they disagree with it.”

As to the LA28 Olympics, we concluded in March and retain this conclusion. And ironically, we were only discussing the LA28 Olympics. This conclusion fits the LA riots as well:

It appears obvious that Gavin Newsom does not care about what he leaves behind. He’s all about living in the here and now, and denying his past, as his vanity podcast confirms, as he tries to rewrite his own history and lengthy record of wreckage.

How will Gov. Newsom and Mayor Bass escape accountability this time? Will they wait until it is a five-alarm emergency, beg for a bail out and then blame any and all consequences on Trump? That seems to be standard operating procedure.

That won’t work this time – we want answers now. It’s not 2028 yet.

  1. Newsolini operates as a foreign provocateur !
Last I checked California is a part of the United States and not the other way around!
I guess Newsolini would prefer to be the governor of Mexifornia.
It is so disheartening to be a taxpayer in this state and see how our tax dollars go to Marxists organizations!

    Send in the guard.
    P.S. Arrest Newsom!

  2. Glad to see this excellent report from Katy Grimes.
Whether it’s the 2028 Olympics, the devastating Palisades and Eaton fires that killed 29 people and burned to the ground 16,000 structures (and damaged another 2,100 more), or the dangerous, destructive, and injurious Downtown L.A. riots paid for with our own precious tax dollars, slimy and corrupt politicians such as Gavin Newsom and Karen Bass always roll out the same crap in response, dip into their giant dirty bags of tricks and typically, ultimately, manage somehow to slide out from under.
But the situation has reached critical mass now. Really now, is anyone actually buying the lame protestations, empty threats, and weird defensive B.S. statements of these backstabbing politicians?
They have put us in the direct path of danger (and misery) AGAIN (and again and again) when they are instead supposed to be providing to Californians safety and protection as much as possible. Which is supposed to be their #1 job. On top of everything else, they add insult to injury by spending our tax dollars to make sure we are thrown defenseless into the wolves den. Seriously?
Uh, really don’t think they will be able to slide out from under this one.

  3. Seems like Newsom (and his trusty legal sidekick Bonta) and Bass are HELL-BENT on burning down Los Angeles, by whatever means necessary…
Any SANE Mayor and Governor would be ordering the RIOTERS to stand down and restore the peace but every time they mention “COMMUNITY” I’m reminded of the root-word similarity to COMMUNISM…
And day-by-day, it becomes increasingly obvious that Newsom and Bass are NOT WORKING for the benefit of the legal residents of California, but rather for the same shadowy power-brokers that installed “Joe Biden” as (p)Resident and ran the auto-pen for four years….

I hope that both Newsom AND Bass (and Bonta and all the other “politicians” and “community organizers” that HARBOR ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS are arrested for breaking THAT law, and also investigated for financial malfeasance that has resulted in all of the budget shortfalls and screw-ups that have caused them to continually go hat-in-hand to the Federal government for assistance…

Let’s face reality, the January wildfires that destroyed much of West Los Angeles, Malibu, and Pasadena/Altadena have resulted in so much financial and EMOTIONAL burden on so many Los Angeles area citizens, that those fires ALONE should have resulted in the cancellation of the 2028 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles, as the focus needs to be RESTORING NORMAL LIFE (whatever THAT is under Democrat “leadership”) for LEGAL citizens of Los Angeles, and now REBUILDING and cleaning up downtown Los Angeles after the Democrat street-army have rioted and destroyed so much property in and around downtown Los Angeles.

ARREST Newsom, Bonta and Bass and all the others that defend ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT CRIMINALS, rather than supporting LEGAL citizens whose homes have been LEVELED by Democrat MIS-MANAGEMENT…

  4. Newsom doubled down on his dare for Trump to order his arrest: Trump responded by commenting Newsom a nice guy but incomponent.

Lucky for Newsom Musk not the president.

    1. I believe Rubio would be addressing both Newsom and Bass in a tone and manner that neither would appreciate. He would certainly cut them down to size. I am hoping Rubio will be our next president. This is the first time I have seen this site and I really agree with your coverage on the different articles I have read. It is so refreshing to know there are still so many decent law-abiding people in CA. I ĺlived formerly in Ventura County, long time ago and when people acted civilized, but now am on the east coast. I do miss CA very much but I would not live there now, it is just too overwhelmingly corrupt now. Thank you for your unbiased coverage.

  5. It’s infuriating to learn that CHIRLA and PSLWEB are two Democrat connected NGOs that are illegally misusing our tax dollars to riot, loot and burn LA down. There are probably many other Democrat connected NGO’s doing the same thing and worse. Hope that U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli and the DOJ go after Newsom and the other Democrat grifters!

  6. President Trump, please prove to the Americans who supported you you’re not a coward by ordering the arrest of Gavin Newsom and his fellow co-conspirators for obstruction of justice and sedition. The elements of the crimes are abundantly present.

BTW, contrary to your comment regarding Newsom being a nice guy, a retraction is in order.

  7. Saw Rep. Win Ping (d-CA) at the podium with two others. Like Guber, he cannot stand still, or perhaps it is a subtle technique to distract us while others are speaking. He closed, his turn, by predicting a flipped congress, next elections.

  8. LA officials waiting behind Mayor Bass’s ~3′ podium, smiling broadly until she finally arrived. Her first point; “It’s not all of downtown.”
