Cox Looks to Clean House at DMV
John Cox Plans to Fire DMV Director Jean Shiomoto if Elected Governor
By Sean Brown, October 18, 2018 11:12 am
With November 6th elections less than 3 weeks away, gubernatorial candidate John Cox is increasing his promises to voters.
Call it a last ditch effort, call it a clear vision, call it what you want, but whatever you want to call it, John Cox means business. Today Cox announced his plans – if elected, to fire DMV Director Jean Shiomoto. The announcement came in the form of a tweet during a response to a displeased Californian who said “Our new governor should fire DMV Director Jean Shiomoto on his first day in office.” Cox replied by stating “100% right. Will do on Day 1 AND will call for an independent audit of the Sept 1. Californians deserve better. #DMV”

California’s are no strangers to the familiar frustration experienced at any given DMV location and neither is Cox. Back in early September the California Globe broke a story on the terrible inefficiency of the DMV along with a vote by the legislature to audit the program which fell short by one vote.
Then, nearly a month later, Governor Jerry Brown finally ordered a long awaited audit of the program. However, the problems within the DMV are far from getting better. Recent details have emerged involving the gross mishandling of 23,000 drivers and double registering nearly 77,000 people. Now, the latest blow is a suspected 1,500 ineligible voters being registered to vote.
Even with the current audit underway, the scale of complications within the department is undoubtedly much bigger than ever imagined. It is clear the department needs to be cleaned out from the top down. And that is exactly what Cox plans to do.
The final results of the current audit are not expected to be finalized until March 2019.
