Newsom Campaign on Cruise Control

The frantic race to control California’s governorship is beginning to cool off as Democrat Gavin Newsom has significantly widened the gap on Republican John Cox by a total of 13 points.

In a new poll released this week, Newsom leads for the fifth consecutive week after taking a solid 54% to 41% gubernatorial advantage. According to chief strategist John Thomas “The race for Governor has shown as consistent advantage above 50% now five weeks in a row for Newsom. As Newsom’s television campaign solidifies his lead, Cox has yet to have any breakout moment in the race.”

Cox’s efforts have remained focused on issues such as prop 6 and the DMV, however, as early ballots have started to flow, clearly the majority of California voters are revealing that these issues are not as important to them as the former San Diego businessman might have anticipated.

Last week the California Globe reported on Cox’s previous poll margin which placed him only 7 percentage points behind Newsom with a potential to close that gap by gaining further support from independent voters. However, this week’s poll shows us that if anything, more independent voters have aligned themselves with Democratic ideals than otherwise expected. Rendering Newsom commits a momentous mistake, Cox’s chances at victory are slowly slipping away.

While at this point, laying low might be the best plan of action for Newsom, his gamble to pit California voters against Trump has certainly payed off well. Not only has the current Lt. Governor’s ads successfully fired up voters, but selecting issues such as health care and maternity leave has proved to soar over prop 6 and others.

Election day is less than two weeks away.
