Sen Wiener’s Bill to Hold ‘Big Oil’ Responsible for Natural Disasters Includes ‘Disinformation’ Punishment

Senator Scott Wiener is trying to make reasonable skepticism a thought crime

By Katy Grimes, January 28, 2025 4:06 pm

Sen Scott Wiener’s new bill to hold “Big Oil” responsible for natural disasters has a Minority Report type of clause in it – punishment for speaking “misinformation or disinformation” about “the connection between its fossil fuel products and climate change and extreme weather or other events attributable to climate change.”

Who judges what is “misinformation?” The “Precrime” chief?

As the Globe reported Monday, Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) announced a new bill, Senate Bill 222, “the Affordable Insurance and Climate Recovery Act,” which “will ensure that the fossil fuel industry and those harmed by climate change disasters” will be made whole by the oil and gas industry.

“No joke” the former president liked to say – usually when he was lying.

“The fossil fuel industry is fueling climate change,” Sen. Wiener said. “They [fossil fuel industry] knew it was leading to disaster for decades, and have incapacitated lawmakers” to make money, he said.

Wiener’s new bill will hold “Big Oil” responsible for natural disasters in California. And in doing so, will allow insurance companies and victims of fires, floods, rain and sleet, wind events, mudslides, and earthquakes to sue fossil fuel companies for damages.

The bill, SB 222, was not yet published Monday, but it is now. The Globe had a chance to read it and honed in on this gem:

(f) “Responsible party” means a firm, corporation, company, partnership, society, joint stock company, or any other entity or association that engaged in misleading and deceptive practices, including intentional lies, or the provision of misinformation or disinformation about the connection between its fossil fuel products and climate change and extreme weather or other events attributable to climate change. ”Responsible party” does not include the federal government, tribal governments, the state, a political subdivision of the federal, tribal, or state government, or an employee of the federal, tribal, or state government on the basis of acts or omissions in the course of official duties. [emphasis The Globe]

So anyone who misleads or uses deceptive practices, “including intentional lies,” or provides “misinformation or disinformation about the connection between its fossil fuel products and climate change and extreme weather or other events attributable to climate change,” can expect a knock on the front door in the middle of the night?

As a media friend asked, “That would include journalists or science professors? Anyone.”

So Senator Scott Wiener just gets to proclaim that there is a definitive “connection between fossil fuel products and climate change and extreme weather or other events attributable to climate change?”

Remember last year when Democrats proposed a “media literacy” requirement into school curriculum so students could “recognize fake news?”

Who judges what is “misinformation?”

Senator Wiener wants those who give out “misinformation” about climate change to be responsible for fire damage caused by climate change. Such as daring to question the lack of science behind the climate change wealth redistribution scheme? Or acknowledging that “objective science on climate has been sacrificed to politics.”

This isn’t the first or second attempt to make spreading misinformation a crime.

In 2018 there were bills in the California Legislature seeking to teach students about “fake news.” Lawmakers were pushing for new laws to root out “fake news” and teach “media literacy” in public schools.

Several of the proposed “fake news” bills claimed, “There is evidence to suggest that the dissemination of ‘fake news’ through social media influenced the outcome of the 2016 U.S. Presidential election,” as justification for attempting to create a government control of the media, I reported. The ultimate plan is to expand beyond this unelected “advisory council” to create actual legislation authorizing state government to make this determination.

While only one of the 2018 bills passed in a slightly watered down version, it should give everyone pause. AB 873 was signed into law by then-Gov. Jerry Brown. Republicans also voted for this dangerous bill.

Meanwhile, Senator Scott Wiener is trying to make reasonable skepticism a thought crime.

  1. Weiner is without question, the worst of the worst legislators in our state. Forty million Californians need energy, need insurance, need law enforcement and need good government. He is against all four.

  2. Thankfully Katy Grimes has taken the time to read creepy Democrat Senator Scott Wiener’s idiotic legislation and report how dangerous it is. As usual, he and the rest of the criminal Democrat mafia in the legislature act like like authoritarian and totalitarian dictators who want to silence any dissent to their demonic globalist agenda.

  3. I seem to recall that that Covid 19 coming from the Wuhan lab was misinformation, and people were censored for suggesting it was. Surprise! The CIA confirmed this week that Covid 19 came from the Wuhan Lab.

I also recall that proclaiming that the Covid 19 vaccines did not stop the transmission of the virus was misinformation. Surprise! The CDC confirmed that Covid 19 vaccines did not prevent the transmission of the virus.

The radical brain dead Democrats continue to claim climate change is creating more weather events. Surprise!
A study by Italian researchers Gianluca Alimonti and Luigi Mariani has challenged claims that climate change is causing an increase in natural disasters. The researchers analyzed trends in climate disaster reports from 1900 to 2022 and found that “climate events” are not increasing.

  4. Scott Wiener (the jokes write themselves about the man, his name and everthing about and around him) is California’s premier projectionist: everything dastardly he accuses his targets of doing he’s working overtime doing himself. What a bolshevik podonok.

    1. Thanks for the clarification.
I recently looked at photos of fire destruction, then the comintern began to speak of rebuilding a better place and SW’s proposals came to mind… communal Siberian workers housing, along [the] imaginery HSR track.
      Next stop New Norilsk!
Prepare to submit all packages for fire log and propane searches, immediately upon debarcation.
      Thank you for travelling electric.

  5. This potential clause is a blatant violation of the 1st amendment of the constitution. It also proves how panicked the dems are over the LA fires. It won’t stand. If passed and signed into law by our lowly esteemed governor, it will be challenged in court. The winds of change are blowing here in California and just as the Santa Ana winds fanned the flames in Los Angeles the winds that are now blowing will change the political landscape here in California for years to come.

  6. I’m thinking that most of us are probably not equipped to treat or in any way manage Scott Wiener’s mental illness, and even if we were, I doubt he allows sensible people to come near him.
So I guess we’re stuck with him and his delusional ideas; for now, anyway.
But never mind, even in California he and his ridiculous colleagues are not going to get anywhere with this particular fever-brained proposal, or anything else he has cooked up for the foreseeable future. Even on paper no one can make any sense of it at all.

  7. NVR notwithstanding I cannot think of a more servile act in Sacramento under the current circumstances, than a Republican politician voting Aye for a single piece of Democratic party legislation.
If constituents are so uninformed, that such agreement to them represents a promise for a better future, then they need professional help.

  8. So, are the 1,600 scientists who signed a letter sent to the California Air Resources Board stating that there is no climate crisis going to be jailed or executed under Wiener’s bill?
    .
BTW, good luck using any search engine to find a copy of that letter. The search engines are still conducting censorship 24/7.

    1. You’re right, Fed Up, Wiener & Co. need to be really really careful in the wording of this bogus bill. Seems to me they and their henchmen are subject to the same mis-and-dis-information punishment they would dearly love to impose on the powerless-by-comparison CA citizens. And it will be much much easier to prove THEIR “disinformation,” won’t it? They can TRY to scrub the internet of proofs and evidence but I really doubt they will succeed. Unless they can manage to scrub every honest scientist’s brain, too. Not sure they have the “resources” anymore to accomplish that one.

  9. Ask yourself how much more of a statist this leftist can evolve into?
In the documentary motion picture Grizzly Man, Director Werner Hertzog asks while reviewing Treadwell’s video, the camera focused on a Grizzly bear head (paraphrasing):
How does one find any sign of human connection in the vacant expression of such a natural predator?

  10. MORE deisive political grandstanding against the big, bad oil companies. They are already held accountable for disater cleanup for accidents they are responsible for, DOH. Maybe he can include provisions in his bill to also hold fireworks manufacters responsible for community destroying fires that are started from children illegally using their products and they have to rebuild entire areas in the Pacific Palisades ??? Hmmmm…..
