Assemblyman Bill Essayli Appointed U.S. Attorney In Los Angeles by President Trump

Essayli resigns from Assembly to take position

Assemblyman Bill Essayli (R-Corona) was appointed by President Donald Trump to be the new U.S. Attorney for the Los Angeles-based Central District of California on Tuesday, with Essayli accepting the position and resigning from the Assembly.

In a statement on X on Tuesday, Essayli accepted the position, promising to follow Trump’s lead as the U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California.

“I am honored that President Trump and Attorney General Bondi have placed their trust in me to serve as United States Attorney for the Central District of California. I intend to implement the President’s mission to restore trust in our justice system and pursue those who dare to cause harm to the United States and the People of our nation,” said Essayli.

“In just over two years, we have achieved major victories to restore common sense in Sacramento. When I joined the Assembly, parental rights, illegal immigration, and voter ID were peripheral issues; we’ve made them centerpieces of our Party. This past election we added true fighters and I am confident they will continue the important work needed in the Legislature to make Republicans start winning in California.”

The son of Lebanese immigrants who fled the Lebanese Civil War in the 1980’s, Essayli graduated from Cal State Poly Pomona and Chapman University in the 2000’s. Following a brief stint as an intern at the White House Counsel’s office, Essayli returned to California as a prosecutor in the Riverside County District Attorney’s office. This was followed up by becoming an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California where he worked on several high-profile cases, including the case against the perpetrators of the 2015 San Bernadino terrorist attack.

While Essayli lost in his first run for Assembly in 2018, he won following redistricting in 2022, becoming the first Muslim member of the Assembly in state history. Essayli swiftly became one of the most well-known Republicans in the legislature, adding in numerous counter-bills against those put forth by Democrats. He specifically became specialized in gender issues, taking a firm stand on and creating bills against things like allowing biological males to compete in girls sports. One bill he attempted last year would have given parents notice within three days of their children no longer identifying as their birth gender in school. In addition, Essayli took a firm stance on voter ID laws in California and trying to get armed officers inside every school in the state. Outside of legislation, Essayli was also known for his passionate arguments in the Assembly chambers, even calling out some Democratic Assemblymembers as liars during votes.

Following reelection last year, Essayli continued authoring bills around gender issues and was expected to continue being a leading Republican voice in the Assembly. However his stances and experience in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California made him noticed by the Trump administration, which led to his elevation to the U.S. Attorney post on Tuesday. As the Central District covers seven counties, including Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura and serves over 20 million people, Essayli will now head the largest federal district in the U.S.

His resignation on Tuesday night also opens up the 63rd Assembly District, which covers a part of Riverside County, up for a special election. While the district has 57% Democratic voter registration, Essayli has won handily in the past two elections in the district, with the 2024 election garnering 57.3% of the vote for Essayli. As Democrats have been losing seats in the Assembly for the past few elections, they are expected to mount a major challenge against the GOP for the district seat in a special election.

For Essayli, he is expected to begin his new U.S. Attorney duties soon following his swearing in on Wednesday.

“It is the honor of a lifetime to lead the U.S. Attorney’s Office and serve the people of the district that I have called home for so many years,” added Essayli on Wednesday. “As our district’s chief federal prosecutor, I will work diligently and tirelessly with our federal and local law enforcement partners to implement the priorities of the president and the attorney general and to protect our communities from criminals. Our citizens deserve no less.”

  1. This is great news! Congratulations to Bill. He knows where the skeletons are hidden in Sacramento and can do a lot more for Californians in the DOJ prosecuting the criminals and racketeers infesting our government offices. His abilities and efforts are being stymied in the legislature by the criminal Democrats and RINOs.

  2. Assemblyman Bill Essayli will be missed by many of his constituents in the California’s 63rd State Assembly district but no doubt he’ll do an amazing job as new U.S. Attorney for the Los Angeles-based Central District of California by implementing the priorities of the Trump administration and Attorney General Bondi? Hopefully the CAGOP will support a Republican who can win the district and be as successful as Essayli?

  3. Fox News reported that nine GOP House members joined all Democrats to defeat a rules package which would have allowed for debate and floor consideration for two critical bills backed by the Trump administration that were slated to get a vote on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively. The two pieces of legislation under consideration would have limited district judges’ ability to levy nationwide injunctions and mandated proof of citizenship to register to vote. Here are the nine House Republicans who voted with the Democrats and allowed the radical left at least another week of free reign:

    Anna Paulina Luna of Florida
    Tim Burchett of Tennessee
    Nick LaLota of New York
    Kevin Kiley of California
Jeff Van Drew of New Jersey
    Greg Steube of Florida
    Max Miller of Ohio
    Mike Lawler of New York
    Ryan Mackenzie of Pennsylvania

It’s very disappointing to see that California’s Kevin Kiley was on the list, but some of us have been leery of him? He’s a Yale trained lawyer who clerked at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Yale trained lawyers have a reputation for being part of the deep-state globalist cabal with ZERO ethics.

    1. “But House leaders also added a provision that would have neutered lawmakers’ ability to file discharge petitions, a mechanism that forces the chamber to consider legislation even if those in charge oppose it.”

Republicans have always been better at in-fighting than running the government. Although they’ve been a tad better at doing the latter lately. The House leadership added fuel to the flame by trying to silence dissention and debate within the ranks – a poison pill. They have managed to make a mountain out of a mole hill. Proxy voting for new parents was turned into an “attempt to block the Trump agenda”. Johnson was the third of fourth choice for Speaker and he is showing why. Here’s the entire FOX article. I believe that NeverTrumper and RINO extraordinaire Paul Ryan is still on their Board of Directors.

      1. Many of us are not a fan of Speaker Johnson, but why should US Representatives vote by proxy which violates the Constitution?

Democrats erupted in applause after the vote failed, and Luna was equally pleased after the rule failed gushing
“I think that today is a pretty historical day for the entire conference and showing that, yeah, the body has decided that parents deserve a voice in Washington and also to the importance of female members having a vote in Washington D.C.,” Luna said to reporters.

As for Representative Anna Paulina Luna, she’s outed herself as an self serving prima donna and fake MAGA/MAHA?

Here’s another article about Luna the drama queen: (https://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2025/04/gop-disarray-trump-agenda-upended-as-rep-anna/)

        1. If you plan on getting pregnant, then you shouldn’t run for congress. And if you do while in office, you should do the right thing and resign. If you actually care about your family, then you shouldn’t put your own desire for political power above them. It’s as simple as that.

          1. @Otakuan. I totally disagree with your comment. Imo, it borders on misogyny. If you happen to be a female, then it borders on self-hatred.

        2. @TJ. Limited proxy voting is allowed; for example, proxy voting is allowed in Senate committees. The House used proxy voting in committees up until the 104th Congress led by Newt Gingrich, when it was eliminated because of apparent abuses. Voting on the floor for the “final passage of bills” is where the constitutionality of proxy voting is an issue. Also, company stockholders are allowed to vote by proxy. I do it all the time.

          1. Luna has been in office since January 3, 2023, but she waited until this week to pull this stunt when two important pieces of legislation needed to pass in order to keep President Trump’s agenda moving forward (i.e. limit district judges’ ability to levy nationwide injunctions and mandate proof of citizenship to register to vote)? Her timing was very suspect? She outed herself and she should join the crazies in the Democrat party?

  4. Have to say on one hand I am sad that Bill Essayli will no longer be representing me in the Assembly, especially since he was one of the few in the GOP that actually made an effort to call out the Dems for their shenanigans. But this is a huge move for him and I don’t blame me for taking it. He will bring his passion to the US Attorney’s office and use it to root out all manner of corruption and malfeasance.
