In a blistering House Judiciary Committee oversight hearing on the Department of Justice on Wednesday, Rep. Ted Lieu (D-CA) launched a desperate attack on Attorney General Pam Bondi, accusing her of lying under oath about President Donald Trump’s alleged ties to Jeffrey Epstein—only to be utterly dismantled when Bondi flipped the script, unleashing damning statistics on California’s sanctuary-fueled crime wave.  The explosive exchange highlighted Lieu’s hypocrisy on public safety, as Bondi accused Democrats of deflecting from the real crises plaguing his home state.

The hearing, focused on DOJ operations including the recent release of unredacted Epstein files, quickly devolved into partisan fireworks. Lieu grilled Bondi on whether Trump had attended parties with underage girls, playing a video clip of Trump conversing with Epstein. Bondi dismissed the insinuations, insisting there was “no evidence” of criminal wrongdoing by Trump, prompting Lieu to charge her with perjury: “If you had any decency, you would resign right after this hearing concludes.”  An incensed Bondi fired back, “Don’t you ever accuse me of committing a crime!”

As Lieu’s time expired and he attempted to silence her, Bondi seized the moment with the next Republican questioner, Alabama Rep. Gary Palmer, allowing her to respond unchecked. “He didn’t want to talk about the crime in California,” Bondi declared. “He does not want to talk about crime in his state.”  She then laid bare the consequences of California’s refusal to honor ICE detainers under its sanctuary policies: The state has released 4,561 criminal illegal aliens onto its streets, whose offenses include 31 homicides, 661 assaults, 574 burglaries, 184 robberies, 1,489 dangerous drug offenses, 379 weapons offenses, and 234 sexual predator offenses.  “That’s why they are deflecting! That is why they’re trying to talk about the Epstein files. That is currently happening in his home state!”

Lieu’s face during the takedown—captured in viral footage showing him gesturing emphatically while trying to interrupt—spoke volumes, as social media erupted with mockery of the California Democrat’s failed attempt to shut down the truth. Nick Sortor posted the clip on X, captioning it: “HOLY CRAP! Rep. Ted Lieu DESPERATELY tried to silence Pam Bondi when she started naming crime stats in his state—so Bondi BOMBED him.” The post garnered over 330,000 views, with users piling on: “Ted is a coward,” and “Yelling doesn’t change math.”

This isn’t the first time Lieu has been called out for prioritizing political theater over California’s safety. As the California Globe has previously reported, Lieu was among 35 California House Democrats who voted against deporting illegal immigrants convicted of sex crimes in September 2024. Lieu’s connections to controversial figures have also raised eyebrows; he received tens of thousands in donations from Ed Buck, the Democrat donor later arrested for drug-related deaths of black males prostitutes and child exploitation.

The hearing’s broader context underscores ongoing tensions between the Trump administration’s deportation efforts and Democrat strongholds like California, where sanctuary laws have fueled crime spikes and federal lawsuits. As we’ve covered, the DOJ sued Los Angeles in 2025 for obstructing immigration enforcement, and recent moves by Mayor Karen Bass to ban ICE from city property have invited further chaos. Bondi’s testimony aligns with Trump’s push to dismantle these policies, putting Democratic lawmakers like Lieu on the defensive.

  1. In the category of contenders for the title of Nasty Puffed-up Small-Mindedness and Foolish Horse-Assery, we already know Ted Lieu is going to run away with the prize every time. So, GOOD for Pam Bondi, who can punch back with the best of ’em when necessary. Satisfying.
