The Globe receives unpleasant emails occasionally from people objecting to our coverage of state politics for myriad reasons.
We received an email this week from someone displeased with our recent reporting. “Mike Lunsford” emailed me with some pretty vile words to express his displeasure:
Katy: So you are what happens to ugly, insecure, semiliterate girls who had to *%$! daddy all through high school while mommy watched, huh?
Wow. Nasty message.
The Globe responded with this email reply:
Hello Mike: I’m writing a story on vile comments people post on social media when they don’t know someone personally. I’m going to use your comment. Can you tell me where you live and what you do for a living? Are you educated?
“Mike” responded:
Good luck with that, you nutcase. Ha!! I certainly hope you hit the correct target.
I live in eastern Prussia and I shoe horses for a living. My formal education consisted of a year of tutoring from a French-speaking babushka who hailed from St. Petersburg.
Happy Pride Month, you proud bigot 
By the way, why do all the truckers on I-5 say your #@!&* smells like the rotting corpse of a raccoon? That seems odd and potentially unhealthy. Do you not have health insurance? Or dignity?
Yikes. I’m a bigot? Mike sent another email message before I could reply to that breviary of intellectual thought:
By the way, make sure to point out to your wonderful readers that gmail is not “social media.” Most of them no doubt are too stupid to get that on their own, so do them a solid and provide that service.

And again before I could reply, he sent yet another email message:
Shit. I just realized how powerful and interesting and important you are. My bad.

I thanked “Mike” for his multiple replies, and said: “I’ll be sure to include your answers.”
And again he replied:
Sounds great. I love that you sent these emails to confirm. Again, make sure you hit the right target.

Clearly I have annoyed “Mike.”
Perhaps it was my reporting Monday on former Ambassador Richard Grenell, the first openly gay Presidential Cabinet Member who was honored for his accomplishments and stellar career in service to the country, by California Republican lawmakers. This was harshly contrasted by by California’s legislative Democrats in power who only celebrated the LGBTQ like-minded community during PRIDE month, made apparent when Republicans also wanted to honor accomplished gay members of their communities and legislative districts, and were refused by Democrat leaders.
Could that be the offense I’ve committed?
Or was it when I was in the State Senate Monday and I named the Democrat Senators who walked out of the Senate as Ambassador Grenell was introduced?
“Senators Caroline Menjivar (D), Lola Smallwood-Cuevas (D), Henry I. Stern (D), Scott D. Wiener (D), and Pro tem Toni G. Atkins (D) specifically walked off the Senate floor when @RichardGrenell was being honored. Ahhh, the tolerant left rides again.”
But Wait! There’s more!
I received yet another email message from Mike titled “Just one more technical thing:”
Don’t mean to bother you more, as I am sure you are extremely busy and/or bored, but can you give me your best guess about when my story might appear?
I ask only because my mom always wanted to see her son in print, and me being quoted by you might give me a bit of relief from her pressure to give her a grandchild. Well, at least for a few days. You know how mothers can be!

My coverage of the incessant LGBTQ legislation and policy has solely been about the infringement on parental rights, and the exposure of children to trans ideology and “affirming care” to youth by teachers and school staff. Gender “affirming care” is leftist code for chemical castration through puberty blockers and sex change procedures, and often to minor children who are in no position to make life-altering decisions about their mental health, sexual preferences and gender.
Grenell said Monday at the press conference that anyone over age 18 can do what they want, but children being coerced or forced into gender transitioning need to be protected. “It’s child abuse,” he said, “and a parental rights issue.”
Coverage of Ambassador Grenell is straightforward – his accomplishments and service to the country are exemplary. Who and what people are is not an ideological name tag but materializes in contributions, hard work, diligence, accomplishments, talents and the execution of genius, expertise and skill.
Identity politics is a contagion and infection, and very unhealthy. It is used to unravel the very fabric of the American spirit and American value system. The volume of immigrants to the United States reaffirms just why people flock to this country.
Only a few days away from July 4th, Independence Day, it is notable that the Declaration of Independence, signed on July 4, 1776, is a testimony to the nation’s ideals of liberty and equality and the basis of American pride. We are all different, hail from many countries, yet come together under one flag, one Constitution, and the values of hard work and achievement, regardless of background, ethnicity, country of origin, gender or socioeconomic status.
So “Mike” may disagree with why I value Richard Grenell and his accomplishments, along with the moms and dads demanding integrity from their school boards, and the female athletes objecting to biological males falsely claiming they are female in order to compete and win in women’s sports, and the parents of school children exposed to highly sexualized school curriculum when they should be reading Where the Wild Things Are and Dr. Seuss.
Mike may want to read these books for some enlightenment and joy – he sounds as if he needs some fun, frivolity, silliness and a few life lessons.
One final note: The motto in the California State Senate in the photo above, SENATORIS EST CIVITATIS LIBERTATEM TUERI, means “It is the duty of a Senator to guard the liberty of the Commonwealth.”
As Capitol lawmakers are supposed to keep in mind, “laws made in our Legislature can have an effect on the liberty guaranteed to all Californians.”
