Yet another report shows that Californians are seeking to flee the once Golden State in record numbers. In this new report from Consumer Affairs, nearly 11,900 more Californians are planning on moving elsewhere than New Yorkers are.
“California’s whopping net loss of 10,453 people may be due to its steep cost of living; cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco ranked near the bottom of our 2024 Cheapest Places to Live list,” Consumer Reports says. “This analysis includes data from 143,506 ConsumerAffairs users who expressed an interest in moving between January 2023 and March 2024. We also reviewed migration data from the U.S. Census Bureau.”
Consumer Reports also found 8 out of the 10 states with the largest net gain of people are in the South. “This could coincide with a cheaper cost of living — 8 of the 10 cities that are cheapest to live in are also in the South.”
The states with the largest inbound increase of people migrating in were in the Southern U.S. – North Carolina and South Carolina were the most popular and second most popular. Florida, Tennessee, Texas and Georgia followed.
While this is a report about where people are thinking of moving, moving companies U-Haul and PODS have reported actual data showing where people are leaving and moving to.
The Globe reported last week:
“The top states Californians were leaving for – as we’ve become accustomed to, Florida and Texas, North and South Carolina and Tennessee,” the Globe reported in January. “U-Haul reports that Idaho, Washington, Arizona, Colorado and Virginia were also in the top 10 states for inbound migration.”
“A new report out from PODS, the moving and storage company, which finds Los Angeles, the San Francisco Bay area, South Florida’s Miami metro, and Long Island, New York continue to see the largest population exoduses – largely because of high housing costs, high costs of living, and compromised quality of life issues.

If not for the kids and grand kids, we could sell our paid off hovel for a King’s ransom and buy a nice house elsewhere, and still have a fat pile of dough in the bank. I know with my knower that when my wife and I kick off, the family will split the pie and leave the state. All of the taxes and all of the insurances, combined with the overall cost of living and all the state does is pick at us like angry ducks.
My lawn mower gets more political attention than us invisible citizens.
We totally agree with your comment! We’re in Ca. after retiring, because both kids moved here before it turned to Kwap…trade offs! Glad I’m old and lived most my life in much saner, and more decent times than this out of control evil demonrat mess we now exist in! SHAMEFUL LOT!
As fast as tax paying and law abiding residents flee the state, the illegal alien hordes, criminals and welfare mooches pour in? Newsom and the Democrat mafia that controls California doesn’t care because they live in walled and gated mansions with 24 hour security paid for by taxpayers?
