In what has proved to be one of the biggest pickups for the Democratic Party, challenger Katie Hill has successfully defeated Republican Incumbent Steve Knight in the contest for California’s 25th Congressional District.

In a video coming this morning via twitter, Hill stated “I am profoundly grateful for what has happened. And in awe constantly of what has happened with this movement and the grassroots support we’ve gotten. We’re going to do big things.”

Although provisional and late mail-in ballots have yet to be counted, Hill has received 51.26 percent with 83,662 votes to Knight’s 48.74 percent with 79,545 votes.

According to the VC Star, “Hill, 31, made her presence known in her first run for public office by raising $7.3 million or more than three times the amount raised by her opponent. A gun owner who identifies as a bisexual and lives with her husband on a farm of rescue animals, she branded herself as the most millennial candidate ever, opening her campaign to a camera crew from HBO’s VICE News Tonight.”

Similar to CD 48’s upset by Democrat Harley Rouda, this victory by Hill appears to have been won on issues healthcare and tax cuts. Knight, the two term incumbent voted against the Affordable Care Act and for Trump’s tax cuts. Hill has also managed to present herself as a moderate within the usually red Ventura County district, advocating for the Second Amendment and increased border security.
