How In the World Did an Agent of China Become the Mayor of a Southern California City?

You just don’t know about people anymore.

One minute you’re fraternizing with neighbors and co-workers and living a day to day life. The next you find out a secret about someone close to you that’s so devastating, you wonder how in the world you let them into your life to begin with.

That’s not to say you should live suspiciously by any means, but you should certainly be aware. Because you never know when someone could turn out to be someone you never thought they’d be.

Take Eileen Wang, for instance. She was elected Mayor of the city of Arcadia, California back in 2022, and, for a while there, served her purpose of taking care of the 56,000 citizens within her city. Then we found out the truth – that she was really an agent acting on behalf of the People’s Republic of China.

That’s right. As if we didn’t have enough to worry about with the cyber infiltration, the secret police stations in New York and other cities, and the weather balloon incident, now we have someone that managed to make their way into a higher office with loyalty to an entirely different party.

Following this accusation, Wang resigned from her position and indicated that she would plead guilty to the charge, one count of acting in the U.S. as an illegal agent of a foreign government.

Working alongside Yaoning “Mike” Sun, she promoted “pro-PRC propaganda” through a website that they had put together, under the name “U.S. News Center.” Sun was previously found guilty of acting as a foreign agent and sentenced to four years in jail for his part. No word yet if Wang will face a similar sentence, as that will come later.

The duo had “received and executed directives from PRC government officials to post pro-PRC content on the website,” sometimes even asking about certain articles to make sure they met to their standards. They were apparently involved romantically, which allowed them to work even closer together.

I just find it ridiculous that someone with this level of connection was able to make their way into a higher-up Mayoral office. Now this isn’t the first time that a Mayor has let corruption seep in, as we saw a Cohutta, Georgia Mayor last week fire his entire police force over actions taken against his wife.

However, this is a much deeper hit for us, as it shows, again, just how easy it is for Chinese agents to seep their way into our lives. They’re already reading us like an open book, and, what’s more concerning, keeping track of how they could hit us, should the situation call for it. It’s not just a matter of manipulation, like the website that Wang was helping run. It’s likely much deeper, given their knowledge of how to hack security systems.

I will say this, however. Wang isn’t “fighting back” against the charges. Instead, she is accepting them and will take whatever fate is given to her. “She apologizes and is very sorry for the mistakes she has made in her personal life,” her attorneys note. “Her love and devotion for the Arcadia community has not changed and did not waver.”

Except it did, of course. She acted on behalf of China and put on a false front for the citizens she was serving. She lied to the people of Arcadia for the sake of trying to spread propaganda, so I have doubt with these words. But she’s willing to accept her punishment and learn her lesson, so we’ll see what comes from that.

As for this situation, it should serve as a warning that we should keep a closer eye on these things. What looks like a relatively innocent thing could, in fact, hold a much deeper purpose. I certainly hope the FBI and the Department of Justice is keeping a closer eye on cases such as this. They need to.
