Mayor Darrell Steinberg’s Gaza-Cease-Fire Resolution Passes Amid Protests

The Jewish Federation of the Sacramento Region voted to officially oppose the resolution

Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg announced last week that would be bring a resolution to the city council Tuesday evening calling for a Israel-Hamas cease-fire in Gaza – 7,365 miles away from California’s Capitol city.

The Globe advanced that it was likely a move to cover and distract from his $66 million budget deficit – and would serve to elevate his political image as Steinberg has his hopes set on a move up to the California Attorney General’s office.

KCRA reported that the Sacramento City Council voted to approve the resolution calling for an immediate bilateral cease-fire in the Israel-Hamas War, in a meeting that lasted until midnight.

The meeting was interrupted several times by protesters, and such heated discussion and disruptions, Mayor Steinberg called for two different recesses. Sacramento police arrested 12 of the protestors.

The resolution passed 6-1, with Councilwoman Lisa Kaplan being the sole “no” vote. Earlier in the day Kaplan spoke with KCRA:

“My question goes to, at what point is it appropriate for the Sacramento City Council to get involved in international conflict and war, and we actually as a council have not had that discussion of, ‘what rises to the level that we as a council should be spending our time on international affairs instead of our local issues like our budget crises and our housing crisis?'” Kaplan said.

She also said she stands “for Israel to exist and be recognized by the surrounding Muslim countries, I stand for a peaceful two-state solution-only if Hamas is no longer in power.”

That fell on deaf ears with the rest of the council members and mayor. The opportunity to grandstand and spend an entire evening on this issue, rather than addressing the many important issues crippling city residents’ way of life and public safety, took precedence.

The Globe asked, “How will Mayor Steinberg’s resolution calling for a cease-fire between Israel and Gaza improve the lives of the people of Sacramento?”

“Quick answer – it won’t, and Mayor Steinberg knows that it won’t.”

“Sacramento California is a mess.”

“Since 2015, under Steinberg’s lordship Sacramento has achieved a $66 million budget deficit – even after taking in millions and millions of state and federal Covid funds (still trying to locate that funding). Businesses are still closed after being forced to under Covid lockdown orders. Too many city streets look like third world hellscapes. Homeless drug addicts are living pretty much wherever they desire – sidewalks, parks, in front of businesses, next to schools, on bus stop benches, on private home owners’ driveways, in alleys, under freeways…”

Indeed. And the mayor and city council wasted an entire evening focused on san issue they have no ability to change, 7,365 miles away from California’s Capitol city.

Notably, the board of the Jewish Federation of the Sacramento Region voted to officially oppose the resolution.

  1. Mayor Darrell Steinberg is one of the most craven, shameless, and useless politicians in the state of California and that is really saying something. Absolutely DISGUSTING leadership from Steinberg, which of course is not exactly a news flash, as well as from most of the city council (with the notable exception of Lisa Kaplan) who just blithely voted in favor of this pointless, purposely irrelevant, and weirdly “virtue-signaling” resolution.

  2. Like Israel would listen to this putz.
“…the Sacramento City Council voted to approve the resolution calling for an immediate bilateral cease-fire in the Israel-Hamas War…”

    1. So true. But Steinberg isn’t concerned about whether or not Israel hears him. None of these leftist politicians who showboat on this topic care about that. What this particular sleazeball Steinberg is doing is saying “Look over there! And don’t look at my gigantic list of catastrophic failures.” That this particular subject is controversial and often has nutcase protesters showing up that create drama and chaos and etc. only adds to Steinberg’s (and the council’s) ability to distract from what HASN’T been done and will NEVER be done to help Sacramento and bring needed order and sanity back ASAP. So he can get attention for a potential A.G. run but divert attention from being a miserable failure as Sacramento mayor.

  3. Sacramento City Hall has become the “I Street Circus.” Kudos to Councilwoman Kaplan for not giving into this circus of groupthink and wokeness. How would such a bogus resolution “resolve” the conflict between Israel and Hamas or address the pressing issues that Sacramento faces? I would advise Mayor Steinberg and the rest of the council to stay in your lane!

  4. I would rather hear him talk about the Bloods, Crips, and the cartels in South Sac.
Does anyone beyond the Sacramento Bee care what he says?

  5. I strongly agree with Katy Grimes that Mayor Steinberg and the city council wasted time on an issue they have no ability to change instead of focusing on improving the quality of life for Sacramento residents. Democrats continue to ignore the massive problems that plague the city and they only serve to make Sacramento’s quality of life even more miserable than it already is. Lisa Kaplan is the only semi-reasonable Democrat on the City Council and I wish she represented my district instead of Councilman Eric Guerra. During the last election Guerra sent out a large glossy campaign flyer in the mail proudly claiming that he was a strong defender of abortion rights and it had a photo of him posing next to a little girl. It was strange and weird but then he’s a Democrat. How he ever got elected is suspect.
