Poll: Majority of Democrats Would Cheer a Military Coup Against Trump; Nearly One-Third Support Assassination 

A new survey of Democratic voters finds large majorities open to extra-constitutional and even lethal methods of removing President Donald Trump from office before the end of his term, results that reveal the Democratic rhetoric about “saving democracy”as cover for a base now willing to scrap elections, the Constitution, and even the president’s life to get its way.

The poll of 683 Democratic voters, conducted Sept. 3 and Sept. 8-10 by Liberal Currents in partnership with the Center for Strategic Politics, asked respondents how they would feel if they woke up to various headlines about Trump leaving office.

Fifty-nine percent said they would feel positive if “a group of U.S. military leaders have removed President Donald Trump from power and assumed control of the United States” to “safeguard the Constitution.” Fifty-five percent would feel positive if Trump “died overnight in his sleep.” Thirty-two percent would feel positive if he “was assassinated while speaking at a rally.” 

That deranged culture already has a slogan. “8647”—restaurant slang for “get rid of” paired with Trump’s status as the 47th president—has spread across protest signs, merchandise, and social media. Defenders call it a demand to impeach him. The Secret Service has treated it as coded threat language, investigating more than 1,300 uses, and former FBI Director James Comey was indicted in 2026 after posting seashells arranged to spell the number.

Constitutional routes were also measured in the poll. Eighty-seven percent would feel positive about impeachment and conviction by Congress; 84 percent would feel the same about removal under the 25th Amendment. 

The assassination scenario was the only one that produced a net-negative reaction, yet nearly a third of the sample still registered it as positive. 

Kamala Harris led the 2028 Democratic primary field in the same survey, followed by California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Pete Buttigieg. Majorities also favored packing the Supreme Court, ending the Senate filibuster, and criminal prosecutions of Trump administration officials. Fifty-seven percent supported prosecuting officials from both the Trump and Biden administrations over U.S. support for Israel in Gaza. 

The findings arrive after a series of assassination attempts on Trump, including the July 2024 shooting in Butler, Pennsylvania, a September 2024 botched plan in Florida, and an April 2026 attempt at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner involving a California man armed with a shotgun, handgun, and knives. 

California Globe reporting at the time noted that several California Democrats, including candidates in the 22nd Congressional District, offered no public condemnation even as earlier rhetoric from national Democrats had spoken of “maximum warfare” against Trump and removing him “by any means necessary.” 

The new poll numbers, especially the 59% who would welcome a military seizure of power framed as constitutional rescue, invert the language Democrats applied to January 6, 2021. A military coup is not an impeachment. It is not an election. It is the extra-constitutional removal of a duly elected president by armed force. That a clear majority of the surveyed Democratic electorate would greet such an event as good news, and the one-third who support assassination, is the story the numbers actually tell. 

That logic is familiar from Marxist-Leninist practice: opponents are not voters to defeat, but barriers to liquidate. The Bolsheviks made it policy. They did not treat rivals as fellow citizens to beat at the ballot box. They treated them as obstacles to remove so the “correct” future could be imposed.

In the name of self-defense, Democrats have stopped keeping the DSA at arm’s length. To beat Republicans and Trump, party leaders and nominees now treat its candidates, money, and organizers as assets. A socialist faction that talks about power, police, and “the system” in Marxist terms is being written into the Democratic platform because winning matters more than walling off revolutionary politics.

The Liberal Currents/Center for Strategic Politics survey does not describe a fringe. It measures how much of the Democratic base now treats coups, court-packing, and even assassination as acceptable tools of saving their power, not the Republic.
