It what has been an extremely large amount of recent cable news appearances, Representative Eric Swalwell (D-East Bay) is hot on Trump’s heels once again as he has suggested to MSNBC’s Hallie Jackson that Congress should consider a government shutdown if Bob Mueller is not protected.
Since taking back the majority in the House following a significant 40-seat midterm pickup, Democrats have been keen to bring President Trump’s alleged Russia collusion scandal back into the spotlight and according to Swalwell, if any legislation surrounding government operations “doesn’t include protecting Bob Mueller” then he won’t be voting for it.
Jackson continued to chat with Swalwell about the issue and inquired if protecting the special counsel and Robert Mueller’s investigation was worth a government shutdown. Furthermore, how would the American public perceive the new Democratic majority if their first move was to “take this all the way to a shutdown.”
In stereotypical fashion, Swalwell the experienced prosecutor, redirected the question and aimed the focus onto Trump accusing him of directly infringing on the rule of law. Instead, he insisted that the “Mueller investigation is legitimate.”
“I’m not voting for any legislation to keep the government open that doesn’t include protecting Bob Mueller.” Swalwell added, “we have to do all we can to protect Mueller.”
On the other hand, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has repeatedly stated that he will not tolerate any such legislation in the Senate as it is “a solution in search of a problem,” he said.
