The Growing Danger of Human Smuggling

‘The driving purpose for human smugglers to commit this crime is money’

At one point in time, the huge concern about smugglers is how they were bringing drugs and guns into our country. But now there’s a much bigger one, with people becoming the bartering chips.

Two cases surrounded human smuggling have emerged as of late, and that has resulted in agencies getting more involved in trying to stop them before more lives are lost.

The first involves a so-called “stash house” that was actually located in Laredo, Texas. Here, a 39-year old Mexican national was apparently harboring 32 illegal aliens in absolutely dangerous conditions, resulting in one ending up dead.

Cruz Alberto de la Garza recently pleaded guilty to such a charge, following an investigation that began way back in October 2025. It began with two illegal aliens being dropped off at an emergency room, with one being declared deceased shortly thereafter.

Not long after that, a tractor-trailer truck was noticed at a Border Patrol checkpoint in Cotulla, with 30 illegal aliens located in the sleeper compartment. They had apparently been moved from a white trailer located at a large property that was acting as the “stash house.” It had extreme heat with no air conditioning, and the people inside were given hardly any food or water.

Terrifying, isn’t it? And though Garza was eventually charged and the rest of the illegal aliens saved, this is just one mere incident that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), alongside Homeland Security Investigations, are looking more into.

But hang on, there’s also another case.

A San Diego resident (and U.S. citizen) named Isaac Jimenez recently pleaded guilty surrounding a case with alien smuggling, but this one involved demanding thousands of dollars from their families and then refusing to deliver them even after payment. Despicable.

With these “alien smuggling events,” Jimenez organized migrants being brought into the United States, then demanding the families pay for them. But they were actually being held in Tijuana, and even after payment, they practically vanished.

Though Jimenez himself didn’t take part physically in the captivity, he still managed it, and continued to allow the operations to go as planned. What’s worse, more payments were demanded even after the initial ones were made, going as high as $15,000. And when no more of these payments could be made, communications were cut off – and those that were taken in were never heard from again.

Both of these cases fall under Operation Take Back America, in which both ICE and Homeland Security Investigations are carefully looking into awful situations such as these, and making sure those that are in charge of them – like Garza and Jimenez – are rightfully punished.

But it just saddens me that these have taken place to begin with. Because of previous President Joe Biden’s lazy border policies – ones that literally allowed illegal migrants to enter our country with very little opposition – people like the ones above took advantage of the situation to make themselves a profit. And as a result, people have died or been killed when things didn’t go their way.

Even ICE made this specifically clear in their discussion surrounding human smuggling. “The driving purpose for human smugglers to commit this crime is money. They have no concern for humanity and are simply looking to make a profit.” That explains the horrifying conditions of the migrants in the trailer, and the ones being continuously tortured while their captors kept bilking their families for money.

With that, I am glad that Homeland Security and ICE are making progress on such cases. Obviously there’s a long way to go, as there are likely hundreds of human smugglers out there that are still carrying out their horrifying mission. But now that they’ve received the proper funding to get the job done, that progress will keep moving forward.

The bottom line? No one should be treated like this. No one. Especially when it comes to others making a profit.

It’s time to stop the smuggling and keep our communities safe.
