Trump Administration to Withhold SNAP Funds From Democrat States

California has refused to provide the federal government data on food-stamp spending

The Biden administration increased SNAP funding 40% in 2024 in an effort to buy the election, according to Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins.

“NO DATA, NO MONEY — it’s that simple. If a state won’t share data on criminal use of SNAP benefits, it won’t get a dollar of federal SNAP administrative funding. Let’s see which states stand for accountability and which are just protecting their bribery schemes.”

So says the X post by Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins. And it’s about time.

States like California that have refused to provide the federal government data and records on food-stamp spending are about to get a kick in the pants.

In the Trump Cabinet meeting Tuesday, Rollins announced that the USDA will cut off federal SNAP funds to any state that refuses its data to the federal government, because of “a mountain of fraud sitting inside a program used by 42 million Americans.”

The U.S. Department of Agriculture will begin next week to block nutrition assistance funding for states led by Democrats that have not provided data on fraud in the program, Secretary Rollins told President Donald Trump at the Cabinet meeting Tuesday.

Only 29 states have provided the USDA their data, requested from states earlier this year related to their administration of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, Rollins said. The 29 states are red states, Rollins said. She said the data was needed to address fraud that she called “rampant” in the program that helps 42 million people afford groceries.

21 Democrat-dominated states refused to provide the data, including California she said.

“As of next week, we have begun and will begin to stop moving federal funds into those states until they comply, and they tell us and allow us to partner with them to root out this fraud and to protect the American taxpayer,” Rollins said.

Notably, in July California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced that the state of California, along with 20 other state Attorneys General, were suing the U.S. Department of Agriculture  over the order to give all Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) records, including the immigration status of beneficiaries and the household members.

This dates back to March 2025 when President Trump signed Executive Order 14243 ordering all agency heads to take all necessary steps to ensure the Federal Government has unfettered access to comprehensive data from all state programs that receive federal funding, including data generated by those programs but maintained in third-party databases.

California risks losing $1.3 billion of annual federal funding towards the CalFresh program, California’s food stamp program.

So what is the state hiding?
