New Su Review: Senator Demands Re-Hearing on Julie Su Re-Nomination

Last year, Julie Su of anti-gig worker AB 5 fame, was nominated by President Joe Biden to become the new Secretary of Labor.

In January of this year, Julie Su of EDD fraud fame, was re-nominated by President Joe Biden to become Secretary of Labor because the Senate wouldn’t even a hold a vote on her initial nomination.

Now, Louisiana Sen. Bill Cassidy is demanding the Senate committee through which Su must pass to get to a full vote, hold a new hearing to discuss the nomination and tenure of Julie Su of Acting Secretary of Labor and gutting of the freelancing sector fame.  

“Since the Committee’s April hearing, Ms. Su’s tenure as Acting Secretary has been plagued by ill-advised policy decisions and consistent mismanagement,” wrote Cassidy in a letter to Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), the chair of the Health Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee. “Ms. Su has failed to carry out her duties as Acting Secretary, is pursuing failed Democrat policies that have prolonged inflationary conditions for Americans, and continues to show clear favoritism for labor unions to the detriment of workers and businesses alike. These issues and more warrant additional public review by this Committee.”

Su, the former chief of California’s labor department who oversaw the disastrous loss of between $32 and $40 billion to fraud during the pandemic, was first nominated by Biden about 50 weeks ago.

Su squeaked through (the above noted) committee on a party-line vote but then proceeded to have at least two Democratic senators come out against her nomination.  Without those two votes, if the Senate held a vote on Su’s nomination, she would lose.

Biden re-nominated Su earlier this year (you have to do so when they linger so long) even though the math in Senate has not changed:  Su cannot get approved by the Senate.

Knowing that, the administration has (so far seemingly successfully, through lawsuits are pending) that Su can remain “Acting” Secretary of Labor for, well, however long Biden wants her to. 

But even as merely “acting” secretary, Su has already done serious damage.

Su has instituted at least two new rules, one as noted above that will harm freelancers and another that will let union reps accompany OSHA safety inspectors when they visit non-union shops, that has both the employees and owners up in arms.  Her very legitimacy to issue those rules has also been questioned and she has already been sued, the claim being she is not really the Secretary of Labor and therefore cannot approve things that must be approved by the secretary.  

Cassidy added that Su has badly botched the oversight of illegal child migrant labor.

“Specifically,” wrote Cassidy, the “DOL has failed to prevent the dramatic increase in illegal child labor, which has risen by 50 percent since 2022. This is amid alarming reports that the senior DOL officials repeatedly ignored warnings and downplayed the exploitation of migrant children for cheap labor, to which Ms. Su has failed to adequately respond.”
