DOJ Announces Election Integrity Task Force and Prosecutions Unit in Nevada Ahead of June Primary

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Nevada announced Tuesday the formation of an Election Integrity Task Force and the creation of a dedicated Election Crimes and Prosecutions Unit within its Criminal Division, signaling a heightened federal commitment to enforcing voting laws and safeguarding the 2026 elections. 

The move comes just weeks before Nevada’s statewide primary election on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, with mail ballots already being prepared for distribution.

The announcement also serves as a pointed reminder that voting in federal elections is strictly limited to eligible United States citizens.

“The right to vote is a fundamental part of our democracy,” said First Assistant United States Attorney Sigal Chattah in a press release. “We encourage every eligible citizen to participate in the election process while also ensuring compliance with federal voting laws that protect the integrity and fairness of our elections. Federal law prohibits non-citizens from voting in elections in Nevada, and our office will continue working with our law enforcement partners to investigate and pursue credible violations of federal election laws where appropriate.”

Harmeet K. Dhillon, Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights, added: “Our republic cannot function without fair elections. The Justice Department has a zero-tolerance policy for any attempt to illegally undermine the legitimacy of our elections, and we stand ready to prosecute illegal voters and those who enable them.”

The U.S. Attorney’s Office stressed that only eligible U.S. citizens may lawfully vote in federal elections. Non-citizens who may inadvertently receive ballots or election materials are urged not to complete or submit them. 

According to the press release, the office is actively encouraging the public to report suspected election fraud or unlawful voting activity to the FBI.

The announcement comes on the heels of Nevada’s recent removal of more than 315,000 inactive and canceled voter registrations in just over a year—one of the largest single-year purges in state history—highlighting how bloated the rolls had become. With an estimated 199,000 undocumented immigrants and roughly 300,000+ total non-citizens (including lawful permanent residents/green card holders, visa holders, and other documented non-citizens), according to Migration Policy Institute and Census-derived data, the Task Force’s emphasis on citizenship verification is especially critical.
